Yeah, when an invention “defies the laws of physics”, and you find out about it from a website called www.thebrighterside.com, that’s maybe something you’ll want to google and see if it pops up in a scientific journal.

I feel like diagonal would work. And one in the center column. A straight line down the middle would be no good, since you bite top to bottom, and there’d be tons of columns with no cheese.

Poor cheese distributionon

I love this game so much. Never played any of the sequels- I don’t want my experience tainted in any way.

Thanks I’m cured

Bold of you to imply this isn’t how it’s still done. I even still have the butterfly gold plates.

I’m not sure if you’re a performer, but I think many would disagree with you. There are many, many art forms where applause is a part of the show, including almost every genre of musical performance I can think of. (I’m guessing you’re not a jazz fan 😊)

Pfffft. /s is for people unable to deal with the consequences of their jokes. Whether I mean it wistfully or cathartically, it cannot be denied that what I said is true.

Once upon a time, ALL the good drinking fountains were for crackers.

Why shouldn’t they work together? They both use the exact same chords, as do a million other songs.

It’s Animal Farm!

I cannot look at a mandoline without cringing. I sure hope that guy gets himself a cutting glove…

You mean… this used to be an animal?

(Also, I’m pretty sure it was ribs, from a chicken place)

Yeah, I suppose that was just a long-winded way of saying that. But also that the label has been repurposed, and that’s probably what makes people like the dude who made this meme mad.

Absolutely not. Part of my point is that we live in a unique era where a genre doesn’t have to appeal to a massive portion of the public to continue to exist, and there’s room for myriad things, and it doesn’t have to be particularly culturally relevant to continue limping forward. In that sense, you can still hear bands playing music that is shaped just like what the maker of this meme understands to be “country”.

If you recall, the original point was that country is over, and everything I’ve said since then has been in an attempt to help you understand what I mean, but I’ll try to be a little more clear- I’m talking about “country music” in its local cultural context. Music made by and for poor rural white people. Its lyrical content was relevant to that slice of humanity’s immediate concerns in that time period. That audience no longer demands a significant part of the music industry, so it’s gone.

I’m not gatekeeping at all. I’m not telling you what to like or what’s “real”. Just commenting on the historical cultural narrative. There’s still “rock” music. And there’s still “country”. Lots of people listen to both of them. But Rock and Roll was a cultural movement among teenagers. It was a singular, not very precedented thing, and it ran its course. It was repeated on a smaller scale a generation later with punk. The foo fighters are neither of those things. They’re a rock band.

Nothing edgy can ever appeal en masse to white culture. When the terms were coined, R&B was for poor blacks, country was for poor whites, and pop was for middle class whites. As “country” made a move on a more privileged audience in order to widen its appeal, it had to drop any pretense at compelling content or real human experience.

I understand where you’re coming from, but I’ll make my point one more time- the fact that it’s still possible to hear music doesn’t mean it’s still a thing. There are professional chamber music quartets, but that doesn’t mean it’s still the Baroque period.

It’s generally understood that Rock and Roll is over. We can debate whether it ended in the sixties or the seventies, but the fact that there are still bands that have listened to the Kinks doesn’t change the fact that our culture has moved on.

I feel like I usually get downvoted for mentioning concepts from Econ 101 around here.

It kinda a little bit does, though. Country was a thing once, but now there isn’t really much to differentiate it from pop. People who know who Hank Williams is are still recording music, but the industry has spoken, and they don’t define “Country” anymore.

Is that a forest fire in the background? Or some kind of post-apocalyptic hellscape?
