If I wasn't a blacksmith and hadn't done this to myself, I would think it's fake. This state only lasts a few hours, though. It scabs up
I've done it on 1000 F metal. Doesn't even hurt until hours later.
I have tattoos and I'm a blacksmith. I can confirm this happens with burns

I set the edge with 120 grit sandpaper then use progressively finer grits and finish with an Ardennes coticule stone
I gotta be honest, I don't either. But it's traditional and what the customer wanted
It's not sharpened yet :) I sharpen them just before sending them
