When I was in, there were monthly tests. 100% of the unit two random months of the year, and a random 10% of the unit the other ten months of the year.

In order to stay in the army that long, you have to rank up. Just like many other careers, you become much more of a supervisor than an individual contributor.

Yes and yes.

My observation was that older recruits generally did better, providing they avoided injury in physical training. I think that generally the decision to enlist was less impulsive, so they showed up better prepared for it.

Not the one you replied to, but I can understand the perspective. The potential problem is not the teacher watching a movie (which is absolutely a normal thing to do). The potential problem is kids gossiping and it getting back to parents, a small minority of whom will do things like lodge complaints that then have to be addressed. It can become a headache not only for the teacher, but for their superiors.

I was saying that *I* was being courteous. It's quite obvious that your level of courtesy matches your level of reading comprehension.

I chose my words carefully, extending the courtesy of assuming that the people reading them were capable of understanding nuance. I'm sorry for my mistake.

Nice strawman. Often doesn't mean always, and I never advocated for abolishing the government.

With regard to hierarchy, that very much depends on the flavor of conservatism. For example, I'm not religious, I believe that government often makes problems worse rather than better, and sure, I'm the head of my home, but I am single at the moment. On the two axis political spectrum, I land somewhere between conservative and libertarian (not the clusterfuck that is the Libertarian Party). I am far from the only person that holds these views. We just get drowned out by noisy assholes.

The altitude is typically 30-35k feet. The range of the radio at the altitude of 30-35k feet is 200-250 miles.

The typical range of an aircraft's radio at cruising altitude is 200-250 miles. Typical cruising speed is 550-600 mph. Most passenger airliners are equipped with Wifi these days. With the aid of Google, how long would it take the average Joe to find the transmit button?

The DoD has over 2.8M employees, not 2,800. That means 0.04 lbs/employee for the month of September.

Nice work! As someone who also stupidly wears black armor in the summer, I'll give you a gentle reminder that hydration starts the day before and continues a few hours after you're done with the event. 50/50 mix of Gatorade and water does the job really well for me.

Well, not with that attitude it isn't.

The pizza, presumably.

I'll fill you in on the other guy's view. As individuals, we are responsible for our own actions. When the other guy was talking about pride, he was talking about pride in the sense of being proud of others' actions, not in the sense of being self-aggrandizing. That he why he redirected to admiration as a more specific way of saying what he meant, instead of the more general word which Mehdi put in his mouth.

With regards to the US, a Congressional declaration of war gives the President a lot of emergency powers. We've been pretty reluctant to do that unless directly fighting peers or near-peers.

Unpopular opinion, but I do not believe merely "being mentioned" in the Epstein files should prima facie proof of wrongdoing. Obviously, the specific context and content (particularly with corroborating evidence) can change that, but I'm concerned that a number of people are going too broad with their implications.

Do you think that might have any unintended consequences on people with less money/time to spare?

If you want to know the specific rank, yes. But Sergeant, Staff Sergeant, Sergeant First Class, and Master Sergeant can all be addressed as Sergeant, so you really just have to see that the rank has >2 stripes with nothing in the middle of them.

Not just labor rates (although that is a big difference), but I suspect that China paid considerably less than the US would pay for the eminent domain necessary for that kind of project.

It was a reality at least as of 2010, but I don't know if they still use it. Zero stars, do not recommend.

It can be tough to have a technical job without a degree. Having and maintaining a good professional network makes up for a lot though.

Defense spending isn't even in the top three largest federal expenditures anymore. Lot of people wrong in the comments section here on the left (they forget that the VAT exists in Europe and is much higher than any state's sales tax), but your assertion on defense spending is factually incorrect as well, even if it was meant to be hyperbole. We could cut *all* defense spending and still be running a deficit.

No comment on the individual in the video, but lawyer pay varies a *lot.* Tenth percentile pay is around $60k, which doesn't sound that bad, but I imagine it's pretty painful with six figures of student loan debt, which is typical of new graduates.

>90% of student loan debt is directly held by the US federal government. Bankers aren't affected by student loan forgiveness, but federal revenue sure as hell is.

making money. They don't just do it for shits and giggles. Higher taxes reduce the amount of money which can be made, which then reduce investors willingness to continue risking their money. This has an effect not just on stock prices, but on things like business expenditures to grow/maintain businesses. (2/2)

I am well aware of how businesses are taxed, but you appear to be missing some key points. The primary purpose of a business is typically not to avoid taxes. It is to return value to shareholders. That can be done in the form of dividends (subject to corporate income tax), buybacks (subject to corporate income tax and often an additional excise tax), or through growth in the company's value (taxes deferred). At the end of the day, though, business owners do have the expectation of (1/2)
