A lot of people cut off the normally floppy ears so they're small and pointed. It's just an aesthetic thing and unnecessary.
Not the best way to teach kids to empathize.. But this didn't happen anyway, so oh well.
That's a bit odd, I can't imaging charging my brother and his girlfriend, especially if we were already doing photos.
I also have family that really respects my time and skill though. Some of my photographer peers have family that tends to take advantage.

Immediate family no charge, for really close friends/other relatives, I tell them I won't invoice them but they can tip me, they always do.
There's a college around here that offers an "iPhone-ography" elective class. I'm still trying to unroll my eyeballs.

There are lots of stressful bits, but all-in-all I love the vast majority of my clients and stay with them from engagement to family photos.
Sometimes I'll trade services, I needed a fancy cake for a birthday and she needed a newborn mini session, etc. :)
I try to avoid sending people to collections if I can though. I lose a portion of the sum owed and their credit takes a hit.
Most people, if they're late at all, pay a month later when they get their first late fee. People that go over 6 months risk collections.
"Good enough for mailers." - They were trying to use low resolution, watermarked proofs for printing. 3/3
