The least derivative thing about EVA is the fact that it's stylistically inspired by Kaijuu shows like Ultraman instead of Mazinger Z.
Also, if you've never seen Gunbuster, it is absolutely required viewing for anyone who's ever enjoyed a mecha anime.

3.0 was is my favorite of the rebuild series because it actually did new things.
Personally, I enjoyed the show well enough because it has really slick robot and monster designs and a well-written cast. Rebuild's better.
Fans genuinely think it's deep because none of them have a grounding in the Japanese cultural miasma that informs almost everything in there
