Call, don't email. Electronic and written communication is almost useless as they will throw it out without looking. As others have pointed out, phone calls and showing up to town hall meetings are much harder to ignore. Good luck, this Canadian is rooting for you.

AFAIK the two main reasons for it are authenticity (DIY ethos being very important in the scene) and that it helps create atmosphere.
