Actually, the entire flat earth movement is kinda interesting from a sociological perspective, since a lot of it originated in the 1800's - so it's a fairly modern phenomenon. And as such, a lot of it is a response to the enlightenment and how specialized modern science has become (e.g. you need tools now to measure shit, rather than seeing it).
