If you manage to hit the tip without knocking the tail they will not shatter
If you watch any slow motion footage of these shattering you will see it always starts in the tail and spreads to the front. 1/2

In the video he mentioned they annealed (heated it up to about 450 C and let it cool slowly) the tail to make it stronger.

It leads to increased sensitivity but as the image is taken over time you can get weird effects when the scene is changing rapidly 2/2
