Can't really offer you a series off the top of my head unfortunately. For crazy art adult oriented scifi theres Akira and Ghost in The Shell
For something without fantastical elements, Whisper of The Heart or Only Yesterday. And I forgot to add Porco Rosso to the "badass" category
If you want some action, Nausicaa, Princess Mononoke and Laputa are badass, if you want less action then Spirited Away or Totoro...
For an actual answer, its hard to say definitively without knowing what your tastes are. Can't go wrong with Studio Ghibli however...
