It's hard to explain without demonstrating, but there must be thousands of videos on youtube about how to wrap a cable
It twists the cord around once for each wrap. If you were to take one and and run it out, the cord is internally twisted like a candy cane and becomes unwieldy, as well as subject to damage. The way to wrap a cord is to alternate overhand and underhand loops so that each turn cancels out the twist of the previous loop. Ropes have the same issue.
