I almost did the day my friend was teaching me in college. I felt it hit somewhere in my eye socket area but no damage and I haven't attempted or wanted to attempt it since.
You could add a few drops of essential oils just for smell but I dont think weve evolved enough as a society for watermelon essential oil.
My general rule is as long as it bubbles I'm good. I even used diluted dish soap in my first apt because it was cheap and "if it's good enough for the oil covered ducks, it's good enough for me". But yeah now as a more adult adult I just get the refill jug
