A degree is good for management / team lead positions but for actual IT positions certs / tons of work experience trumps a degree.
Working for the tech company will help but he should seriously get certified. A+,Sec+,Net+ are easy starting certs. Then move onto specifics
Does your friend have certs? Experience is only good if it can be verified.
