I was arranging knives on a knife block. I accidentally dropped one; it skidded across the floor and got stuck under one of the large industrial refrigerators. I knelt down and reached under the refrigerator to grab it. As I did, I heard a creak behind me – a door opening on stubborn hinges. I straightened up and turned around, still on my knees. A blast of cold air hit me in the face. I was staring into an open freezer, ice caked on the back of the door and the walls. There were bodies in the freezer. Old, decomposing bodies. Wrinkled, leathery skin peeling off yellowed bones. Bones that were oddly compromised, shattered, pulverized. Greenish mold clinging to the remains of brain matter cradled in cracked skulls. The putrescent smell of rotting flesh. I closed my eyes and screamed. And screamed and screamed and screamed. “Katy! What the fuck, Katy!” I heard Hamed’s voice, felt his hand on my arm, shaking me. I opened my eyes. The freezer was empty. Empty and turned off.
Absolutely not.
Until they get unionised and regulated the industry will be way too prone to exploitation.
It's psychologically and physically hard, often dangerous, and rarely recognised by the legal framework around labour.
It is definitely work, and highly beneficial to society at that. But calling it legitimate implies a level of recognition it doesn't get.
Even if that sentence is meant aspirationally, I fear the approach is flawed.
I'm not saying it isn't propaganda.
But what do you think backup energy systems for a hospital consists of? Backup generators require fuel as much as the power plant does.
There are videos of the streets of Havana with not a since gas powered vehicle in sight, stories of massive blackouts, and oil still isn't being allowed into the country.
It's an island nation, it isn't completely self-reliant, few nations are really. The blockade cuts off supplies and people die. It's s a straight line.
Every 4 years you have to choose between conservative neoliberal oligarchy and Fascism.
And if you don't choose it'll be your fault when [the opposite of the current speaker's own position] happens.
Also we will likely just alternate between the two regardless.
This is what we call democracy and it's the best way we have found to get representation for everyone™.
Sex is treated as a commodity(thanks capitalism).
Women are treated as if their value is derived from their ability to provide sex to a man. So when nudes are leaked... Well a commodity which is easily accessible has less value.
Consumption is largely decoupled from morality(thanks capitalism). So when sex is a commodity paedophiles aren't engaging in a morally reprehensible act, they are consuming a scarce and therefore high value commodity.
It really felt like Iran was getting closer to finally getting rid of the theocracy. And now that's set back another 30-50 years.

It's not theft. It's looting.
He won, he defeated his enemies and now he feels entitled to scoop up as much of the spoils as he can.
Turtle that doesn't swim
Kagi has been great since I made the switch 4 months ago
I now use Firefox, Kagi, and Proton, all of which I'd recommend as means to get away from Google.
Any reason why you wouldn't recommend Firefox as the browser alternative? It's what I'm using and I'm wondering if you know something I don't.
I dno really. At some point the balance is likely to flip from shielding from the sun's rays, to trapping the heat from the sun.
And I suspect aerosolised concrete is a pretty effective greenhouse gas.
In a roundabout way you just said you don't really feel embarrassment. I'm not sure if that marks you as a potential narcissist or something else. But you need to understand that you are in a vanishingly small minority in this regard.
For most people the panopticon effect is very real.
Solicitation misdemeanor... As in he went to a prostitute to buy sex?
And this dude is announcing it as if they caught a terrorist?
I get that it's illegal in the US, but how is this somehow worse because if the position he held? It doesn't seem like his power or access had anything to do with the crime he committed.
Alienation, isolation, and desperation.
I'd be willing to bet that even the Fascists are less optimistic now than they were before they started gaining power.
The whole machinery of Fascism is meant to drive them into apoplectic rage, and that mindset isn't exactly engendering optimism.
You can hope he will repent. You can even forgive his transgressions, though that might not be up to you.
But you can not tolerate intolerance. When someone violates all the principles of the society he lives in, and refuses to stop doing so even after society have tried all methods of enforcement. Well then he needs to be removed or the society seizes to exist.
For some people you pick exile, execution, or you let them destroy everything around them.
Don't preempt censorship by self censoring. Don't cede the authority to dictate appropriate language to any authority before they demonstrate der willingness and ability to enforce the position.
Especially don't do performative self-censoring like f*ck. Everyone knows what you mean, no one is protected from the bad words. The platform gets to claim Virtue and be edgy simultaneously. The only thing gained or lost in that process is you ceding the moral authority to the platform for no reason.
I was born in the 80's and man... Getting past 26 seems really difficult. If anyone knows how please let me know.
The first two books get significantly weirder than the later ones. They are still great, but if you get a little lost, just stick with it. It's worth it.
Plus, starting with the first two is the best way to read those two specific books, coming back to them later can be pretty jarring.
But man I wish I could read all those books for the first time again.
You reading in release order? That's kinda one of the trickier ways of getting into it.
12 years from the Tan Suit scandal to the 'sex criminal russian spy president is a peadofile serial rapist and the entire government is trying to cover it up while his coins are murdering civilians in the streets... oh and he wants to abolish NATO.'
JD Vance is scum.
But what does he mean by "it took her hours to geth through JD Vance's security"
Did he set up a security checkpoint she had to go through?
If her car was physically blocked... Could she not get out and walk?
Did he jam up the traffic in the entire city?
I don't understand how you get hours worth of delay. Even 30 cars in a pile up wouldn't be that much of a problem if you are just trying to get past.
That's a little too much man.
You can't just go around saying stuff like "republicans can think".
How do you pronounce Chh?
I inserted that because the original question was about wealth and poverty.
And dismissing it as irrelevant or insignificant is worthwhile because of the implied argument posed by "rich because smart and therefore more deserving"
In any discussion about wealth distribution and the cause of poverty it is absolutely a good thing to cut through bullshit like this.
There are ways to get involved in politics other than voting.
When the voting system is so rigged and broken that the outcome barely matters, telling people to vote to 'participate in democracy' is just feeding the propaganda propping up the system.
Whether the outcome matters depends a lot on the specific election tho. Local candidates can actually make a difference.
How many times can you expect a leftist to vote for the lesser evil only for a centre-right corporate stooge democrat to take power and continue making things worse before that leftist has lost all hope and just checks out of the whole thing?
Protest non-voting is the "this system is so broken that it needs to be burned to the ground, and now they a promoting some idiot who is promising to do exactly that? Eh fuck it, let him cook"-vote
You can't buy the false binary, and you can't lose hope.
It's genuinely terrifying to consider that, racists, christofascists, and white supremacists all feel empowered by seeing people in government get away with the shit they want to do...
And then to extend that line of thought to paedophiles.
When looking at cohorts large enough that this stuff is statistically meaningful, everything I've read indicates that genetic disposition is by far the least important factor in predicting outcomes.
Also I'd challenge the idea that intelligence is the main driver for financial success. In any modern society that is.
The Dens need to be made to understand that the established political order is dead.
They *might* get the chance to salvage something by implementing meaningful reform in basically every aspect of government.
But if they get the chance and they don't fix it, a new political order will get established without the input from politicians.
