He wanted to see how things with three states (instead of two) interact, and allow custom rules to be used (not necessarily symmetric rules)
Nice! This is actually a Java program I wrote to do this. It was for research for a professor. At a minimum it mimics Conway's Game of Life.

There are only 9999 possible combinations, and this post has over 6000 points. If each of us just calls two numbers, we can find them!
It's probably a very small fraction of all of the devices. I'd bet the map is actually of ISPs data usage, so one dot per ISP.
