Leather is lightweight and is good for slides and it's easier to move in. But racing has a bunch of known hazards. Street riding doesn't.
Yeah and chain links roll in chain mail. So it gets scuffed on asphalt then rolls around to cut into you.
You're right, more expensive too. Jeans are cooler when you sit on top of a 1,000 degree bomb though. Armored jeans are best though.
And impact ablation. Kevlar with armor is waaaay better for all three. Racing is mostly abrasion prevention. You often slide, but not hit.
Back up for a second people. Two things we are talking about, road riding and racing. Road riding requires abrasion prevention, airflow, 1/2

No. Leather doesn't do as well. Armored jacket or pants wraped in Kevlar or another durable textile is waaaay better than leather.
