The new common core methods in the US teach kids this now.
People shit on the new Common Core in the US. It looks like a mess, but kids are now taught to think about multiplication exactly this way.
Not practical. It's too difficult to do mentally and if you have to put it on paper you're better off doing it the way you learned in school
