I never understood why people in pain would be depicted as moaning in TV until I had a spinal lesion that affected the nerve roots and spinal cord. There was nothing that would stop the pain, not even opioids. I would take them just to try to sleep thru the pain and I would wake up moaning just like that and I wouldn't understand why.
