Who said anything about altruism? Building housing for a profit will increase supply by allowing those who can afford them to move into them. Whatever price range they are, they will lower overall costs because it will increase total supply. Someone who understands economics would understand that.
The answer has always been the same. BUILD MORE HOUSING. Any increase in the supply will eventually cause a lowering of prices. Build cheap housing, people who can only afford cheap housing will be able to get it.
