When I was young and an idiot I drifted into a snow bank with my manual Subaru on a country road. By stroke of luck a snowplow came by and the guy taught me how to rock my car to get out. A valuable lesson was learned that day.

While high Z material like steel/ lead does stop beta radiation, when it interacts with high E betas (e.g Sr 90, P32), it generates incident x-rays called bremsstrahlung X-rays that can be just as bad. It’s better to use plastic or a leaded plastic. Source, I’ve been working in the health physics field for over a decade.
My dad has only one also, this is what it looks like when he takes his glass eye out of the socket. Used to do it to scare kids on Halloween.
Not sure how old your son is but Minecraft has an education edition that teaches younger kids basic coding skills, could be fun to do together.
I feel like I’m a world of anthropomorphic possums, this would probably be an acceptable communication method on some levels. Given that it’s kind of their thing.

My wife and I lived in Italy for a year and a half and this is exactly why I’m glad my parents were able to give our dog a home in the states for the time. I wanted to take her but this fact scared me out of it.
My grandfather didn’t use physical means, but he made damn sure I wrote with my right hand after showing signs of being a lefty. My handwriting is trash
