The # of global, powerhouse bands has gone way down. There are 100x as many middle tier bands as there once was.
Universities absolutely compete. They consistently try to create both a supply & demand. K-12 can't compete bc gov't won't let it.
Sure. But if your options are 2 nearly equal suitors for this Friday, & one is buying dinner & drinks, that's an edge.

To be fair, that money keeps a massive amount of folks employed. May not always be the best way, but it's a lot of jobs.
If nearly all of your suitors are around the same, then it makes sense.
You are in a highly unique situation. If a woman has multiple suitors, why would she choose the one that makes her pay?
