I've said this before -- I don't think deleting your account is wise. Delete the app, but leave the account open to create dead load on their databases. It costs them money and could even contribute to a crash!

But I did some quick Googling and found a lot of contradictory information; it seems to have been in light use starting in the 1930s, but Superman is the one who popularized it and gave it the modern definition.
