I still don't understand why he moved the rook to b7 first instead of going directly to c1. I don't see anything that can block or attack the rook at that position, and it still opens his own bishop's line of attack? Would it also be mate?

That looks like it would use way more muscle groups, but I ain't smart enough to know if it would be a more effective exercise
