NPS does do some fire management on their own properties but the majority of the forest in the US is US Forest Service.

Sherman is a sequoia that's in sequoia national park, which is not Nor Cal. Given the snow and diameter I would say it's a sequoia.

Red stag and Elk are the same species. Although they are sub species, so you are both technically correct in your own ways.
Dont feel too ashamed, Red stag are the same species as Elk, Just a sub species on a different continent. They are both Cervus elaphus.
