It might be just dirt friend. Lots of calm rivers look like that. I don't consider such things gross unless they've been polluted or have some kind of bacteria bloom going on.

My Saint Bernard used to "hug" by shoving her head into your crotch and staying there, using your thighs like a sleep mask, with her tail wagging away. It was something she discovered all on her own.
