I wouldn't actually mind a permanent increase to the character count. In the cases of long diatribes and informative threads, it can be nice not to have to open reply after reply, occasionally to such a degree that the main comments are no longer visible. On desktop, you can open maybe eight or so before returning when you are done requires that you reload the page, or use the back arrow. Depending on browser choice, maybe also a back button, such as on the side of your mouse. Cheers either way.
