Linux is pretty secure on it's own since you need to enter a password (sudo) everytime something tries to install or modify without prior permission. I don't know enough to vouch for it fully, but less is needed AFAIK compared to Windows to stay safe
From my limited experience with linux it's very similar, especially if you go with the easier ones like Mint or Ubuntu
