This was going to be my suggestion. Terry Pratchett's style is similar to Douglas Adams, and I really enjoy both.

Personally I like chronological order. The world grows and progress, as do the people over time. Or just start with what the library has.

He's tied with Moist Von Lipwig for me, their books were my favorite. 41 books and the series still ended way too soon.

Nice. I do packs for large, small, and exotic animal surgeries. Other than a couple of retractors, we use most of those.
