At least in north America, yep our black squirrels are just oddly colored grey squirrels. Like Human red heads. They're mostly found in one geographic area, so they get mistaken for a different species. Really not sure about the European ones.
Are they actually a separate species? Our black squirrels are just a phenotype of gray squirrels.
