That said it's not *that* bad as you make it sound, but since all you probably can think of is blood, I can understand your feeling of ick.
It's not really the period blood (albeit it does not exactly help) but mostly hormones, and it's also bit psychological.
I do notice, even just by sitting next to other women. One thing to know is that this differ greatly from person to person.
(and a extra pair of panties, but that could be a bit awkward for a teenager I guess)
