I think it ‘killing’ the genre was a bit of an exaggeration with how the games industry kinda just naturally changed in the following generation. Game was still pretty fun even despite it dragging on. Spectacle and gameplay innovation just became more important after.Funny enough, there is a randomizer community for the game that largely solved its problems (arguably) by just letting you switch Kongs on the fly without Tag Barrel backtracking, among other settings and QoL things.

Depending on what system you are on, plenty of us could suggest games to try. The RDR games are a somewhat rough starting point.
