A standard 75mm (3") ball costs around $20 depending where you get it from. Oranges work well for learning the very basics.

It's pretty prevalent in the circus community too. Kinda sucks though as we try to make others happy.
That is true. Though I've found once you're open to the chance of hitting yourself you can learn faster. Same goes for poi.
Step 1 of learning is recognising that will happen.
