Making sure to lift my knees was a hard thing for me to learn but it helped

Or you could just speed walk and avoid the bad stuff. 'NO, that's too dorky and un-cool looking. I want people to think I'm hip!'...

From a marathon runner, shoes are the biggest game changer here. I recommend Brooks.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Cheers just did my first ever 2k last week and I think I could like this shit

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

thanks i run so much better now

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

i didn't realize running was something you could be a beginner at

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I used to be made fun of for my running posture, so now I'm really self conscious whenever I run. Plus, I have really bad stamina.. *sigh*

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Step 1: Place the first foot in front of the other

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

What do you do about runner’s knee?

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Better advice: Breathe in on 3 steps, out on 2. So you're not always contacting your diaphragm with the same foot down, and avoids cramps.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not sure if legit (good) but my personal philosophy for running is to run as quietly as I can in an attempt to reduce joint shock.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You're on the right track!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Figured I was since I've never gotten shin splints. Not even after marathons I sorta trained for.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Also make sure to have good running shoes that are made for your foot type and running gait!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

But don't overthink it! Shoe science is pretty well developed and there are hard hundreds of styles and brands which are just fine.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Or be like that old dude who went 875km in gumboots and shaved over a day from the world record at the time and led by 10 hours.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Fruit Loops.

Walking! Maybe add a 2min jog. Then in a week add a min or 2. Progress up SLOWLY to avoid injury.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

jesus god i'm not trying to walk or run, i'm trying to go from beginner couch potato to expert potato. at least like avid novice.

Running Potato? Fucking 9gagger...

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

It is better to have an odd number for your breathing pattern, so you are not always exhaling/inhaling with a step on the same side.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It is also better to have longer exhalation than inhalation. If you get "stitch" in your side, tats a diaphragm cramp and symptom of ...

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

not exhaling enough. Try breathing 4 steps out, 3 in -- or 3 out, 2 in.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Can I hike, swim, Zumba, elliptical, and literally anything else, other than actual running/jogging? Because I hate it with a passion...

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What do you people plan on running from?

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The police

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Responsibilities.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Feelings.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

This heavy feeling of weakness and self pity.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I started running one afternoon and got this terrible pain in my lower abdominal. That was 3 years ago and the pain's still there.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Neat

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As someone who recently started jogging semi daily, I appreciate this post.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Why on earth would anyone run voluntarely? Suckiest sport ever.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Because if we're being chased someday, I only have to be faster than you.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I stay fit, but running still sucks. :D Allso, I own a gun, so I only need to shoot you in the leg that lightly jog off. :P

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Baters gonna bate.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That was the first test. You've passed.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

All potatoes are required by law to have poor running form. It was in the Monday Morning Report. You did get the memo, didn't you, Bob?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I am that potato

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Same as the girl in #2

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

...because potato.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Stretching can lead to injuries, and is more for increasing flexibility. Warm-up with light walking & short spurts of a slow jog.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, don't stretch heavily before an activity. Stretching is NOT a warmup

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Proper stretching is different. Flexibility is massive in competing athletes.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes, of course, but if you arent running properly in the first place, there is a pretty good chance you arent a competing athlete.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm saving this telling myself I'll use it, but I know I've just lied to myself.

I dont understand what its doing and have a frighten.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Don't get shin splints they suck

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Vague wording. It literally means just pain in the lower leg. Many causes and treatments.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I agroed my shin splints trying to catch a bus, didn't catch said bus and sat on the ground clutching my legs. A guy stopped to check on me.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Tibia, connective tissue, muscles, etc.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I have shin splints that won't go away. It's been over a year. I spent half that time not running due to pain. They do suck

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

have you tried compression socks?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah I did compression socks for a while. Now I've been changing my running form and just got the stick to try and massage the muscles.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Im going on 15 years with shin issues now. Seen tons of doctors, changed my running form, and have been told by trainers that I shouldnt be

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A runner. So i still run.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Any advice to work through the pain? My big issue is when I go too hard they hurt all the time, not just when running.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Taking time off is the only real way. If you must run try icy hot and Motrin. I never raced without those drugs.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I should mention, running through the pain is prob not healthy. I was determined to run on my HS and college teams. I prob f'ed up my legs.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The only time I run is when something is chasing me.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Didn't realize I often lean back more then I should like that. +1

9 years ago | Likes 345 Dislikes 3

I can never tell if I have good posture while I run. I always end up judging posture from impacts

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

While running, the first thing to go (and quickly) is my lower back; Long before my legs, breath, or heart. Desk jobs maybe?

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

It's quite hard to get used to, feels unnatural at first. Legs should move like you are riding a bike. Push off your step with your toes!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Pro tip on learning to run correctly: take your shoes off, run, and adjust accordingly. Guarantee you won't run on your heels for long.

9 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

The best form is to run on the balls of your feet or at least the first third of your foot.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Are we really gonna trust a guide that comes from the government? I MEAN THEY GOT RUNNING POTATOES

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

They got potatoes? What do I do to get some of said potatoes?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Guys, I think he's a skeleton, don't answer.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Chi running calls it ' running with your heart.'

9 years ago | Likes 42 Dislikes 0

As much as I love barefoot running, fuck that analogy.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

good form doesn't need to be dressed up in some mystical bullshit

9 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 8

But mystical bullshit can have some good applications. Tai chi completely helped my breakdancing

9 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

Tai Chi? You should try capoeira

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yes, I got my 2nd belt (cord) in capoeira, and the tai chi also helped that a LOT! :)

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sick bro

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Tai Chi helped my waterbending

9 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

So Tai Chi can help you make Chai Tea?

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Also helped me with my rune collection

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Northern Shaolin kung fu helped with my Firebending

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This advice is largely misleading. I'm a coach, former running store manager, and track all American and I couldn't not say something (1)

Really helpful comments and links, thanks for sharing

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What do you think about landing on the heel vs toe. Vs midfoot I guess I didn't realize that was an option.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The more important question is where is your foot landing in relation to your body. Anything in front of you (whether it's heel, toe, mid)

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Is a braking force that slows you down and puts increased stress on your lower legs (think shin splints, stress fractures, etc). It needs to

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Be right underneath you (or damn close) for optimal efficiency. In gonna make a post about this Sunday so I'll tag you

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2OD96zocXRU How's his posture?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The fundamentals are definitely present and really just requires minor adjustments at this point lol

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The dude ran for 2&1/2 days straight and shaved nearly 2 days the record for the 875km marathon.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This. I've ran in college, coached, and competitively race marathons now. This is too watered down. Strict adherence would get you hurt.

Do you know James Walters?

I can't say I do. I got too nervous if I knew my competition so I never looked into people

Any tips on how to fix/work around shin splints?

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

In most cases, shin splints are a beginner's problem, they go away. If you are overweight, walking is better for you than running 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You can stay active longer, go farther, and put less stress on your shins/joints. Once you've got the weight down running is much easier 2/2

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It can be caused by a muscle strength imbalance. Strengthening your calf muscles will help to stabilize the tibia on impact.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Mother. Fucking. Heel. Drops. Those little shits helped me after like 2 years of stress fractures. That and switching from Nike to HOKA

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Don't heel strike. Land on the front of your foot and don't wear shoes that have a shit ton of padding.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This is a major misconception. Olympians heel strike on easy runs and its no biggie. Its inefficient for a race but there's more cushion (1)

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In the heel of your foot to absorb the stress. Additionally, running on the ball of your foot stresses your calves more which can lead (2)

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

To tight calves resulting in an imbalance between the calves and shin muscles

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

@Chewy4President is absolutely right. Go to a mom and pop shop and have them analyze you. The right shoe has nothing to do with your (1)

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

High or low arches and your pronation and supination does not automatically mean you need a particular shoe. Expect to spend anywhere (2)

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

From $90-120 on shoes but trust me, its an investment. Also, replace them every 300-400 miles. Being proactive not reactive to injury

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

3 broad categories of causes all equalling too much stress on leg muscles: 1) old/improper shoes 2) too much, too fast. 3) running form 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Shoes are a huge. You need running shoes for your type of foot. Dick's or Footlocker can't provide that. And shoes get old over time too. 2/2

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

agreed! 100 miles is about the limit on my shoes; gets expensive but injuries are way worse.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

For a wide foot, Altra is amazing. I've been running in their Superior 2.0 for the past year and a half, amazing, and 0-drop too.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

i wear Hokas, and i have not had a single injury since i switched; trail and asphalt shoes are epic.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I found adjusting the way my foot hit the ground helped, I try to hit just before my heel first, rather than flat footed 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

2/2 Hitting flat footed made it worse! Also worth investing in some decent running shoes and perhaps some insoles - Scholl does good ones

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've never ran flat footed. Always landed on my heels, but that led to shin splints, so I tried running on my toes, but that feels wrong

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Get some Scholl insoles - either the gel activ or the shock absorbing ones. What running shoes have you got?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Tried a few different ones, but could probably try a bit more expensive pair as I've been a bit cheap on running shoes in the past

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I used to have the worst shin splints. Splurged on some awesome shoes, problem solved

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

New shoes it is, then

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I found getting ones specifically made for stability control work best to help me.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I highly, highly, HIGHLY recommend HOKA One One's Clifton model does. I have been running in the Clifton 2s for around a year now (1)

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Almost everyone overstrides naturally and in most cases it isn't bad. When someone says lean forward many people will lean from the hips (2)

9 years ago | Likes 113 Dislikes 2

Making the overstride worse and that's when problems happen. The lean (which is very slight) should happen from the ankles so the body (3)

9 years ago | Likes 110 Dislikes 1

Nice and straight head to feet. I did form analysis for my athletes so here's a link and hopefully you can take something from it (4)

Question about the midfoot thing, wouldn't that lead to your foot hitting flat on the pavement? I thought landing toward heel was proper
