Actually there is a ramp to help get things on/off at the edge. If there was a bump you would have to jump it once you got down.

Which suggests that putting your hands out is a trait learned from/for small falls and isn't necessarily designed for larger "once off" fall

Jujitsu breakfalls use forearm & cupped palms; but is also the relaxation, not locking joints and use of breath. Needs lots of practice
