Once money leaves your hands, its out of your control. With things up-in-the-air, better to stay fairly liquid and have cash on-hand in case you need to make quick decisions. What's the point of paying off student loans if you're possibly gonna get shipped off to a prison camp soon.
Likewise, they can freeze electronic funds. So, might want to slowly draw some cash out to keep a few hundred bucks in real cash some place easily accessible at all times. Wife and I used to keep $400 in the pocket of on of her 100 dresses in the closet. Stopped doing that when we thought things were reliable and predictable. Now that everything's up-in-the-air again, going back to doing that.

Always a good idea to keep an emergency cash stash (various denominations). When power goes out, ATMs and credit card processing does too.

My ex worked out it was cheaper to pay the minimum off her student loans for the rest of her life, than to pay off the loans.

Might I suggest too that those of you in red states who are people rather than maga, think about getting into a blue state asap, if you can.

Baby we are trying our hardest. Pray to whatever fates you believe in that we don’t get too badly hate crimed before we can flee

We're in Texas. I suggested Illinois. Wife doesn't like cold. I suggested New Mexico. Wife said she doesn't like the job prospects. So, I just stop and stare at my wife. I ask her if she truly understands what's going on here, b/c she has more to lose than me at this point and I'm trying to do my damndest to keep her safe. Who gives a shit if a state is cold as long as it protects your freedoms. She has family here she doesn't want to leave. They're MAGA, though. She's got to think things over.

She’ll need to snap out of it tbh, because Howdy Arabia is one of the worst of the lot.

I think (and I don’t have student loans) it might be time to declare bankruptcy!

Also, I'm upvoting you. It's important that folks seeking information know what their options are. You made a statement that brings up a valid question on if bankruptcy can be leveraged. I don't think your statement should get downvoted to oblivion. It brings up a good conversation that some folks might not know about.

Bankruptcy doesn't eliminate student loans. As college prices sky-rocketed, they noticed more and more folks were super under-water on their loans and using bankruptcy to "Reset" their lives. So, they nipped that in the bud. I've been aggressively paying down my student loans after college, but don't see the point now if wife and I need to make plans to move out-of-state or save up to buy a gun or just have liquid assets in case of other unknown unknowns.

Notice I did say I don’t have student loans. lol
