After so long, I have awakened from my slumber...how have you been, imgur?
Roughly 365 days ago, I lost my mind and attempted to create 40 sandwiches in 40 weeks. It was an arduous journey filled with uncertainty and kewpie mayo. For a time, I was undecided on what I would do when I finished, but this all changed when you folks made one philosophical debate abundantly clear:
"Is a hot dog a sandwich?"
I attempted to sate your concerns with a link to the profound cuberule.com, however the question persisted every post, every week.
You deserve proper closure, one not afforded by a meager 2-minute read. Also, I'm hungry. Might as well nose dive into another nine month venture with reckless abandon!
Fingers crossed I don't run my funds dry again!
I figured I would start off with the original hot dog. Local butchers created parboiled sausages of pork or beef encased in sheep intestine as far back as the 13th century in what is now known as Frankfurt.
The Frankfurt sausage or Frankfurter quickly caught on across Europe, expanding the Americas in the late 19th century. It was there, in the US, where it truly took form. Within a bun of comparable length, the Frankfurter was officially christened Hot Dog. The name seems to originate from suspicions of dog meat being used for the sausages...
Anyway, the Frankfurt sausage is a classic German meal, often paired with sauerkraut and some form of starch (in this case, potato salad). So, without further ado, LET'S BEGIN.
This should be a pretty easy return to form, nothing too complicated.
I'm gonna try and make the potato salad myself. This would be way too short otherwise.
First, I'll be boiling one too many potatoes for the serving size. Off to a great start already!
Next, I'm gonna dice up the celery
Huzzah, my cutting skills are still sharp as ever!
Next on the list, I'm gonna boil some eggs. I've never tried potato salad with eggs, but this is apparently the North German method.
We'll get that started...
...and finish up the potatoes!
Alright, so the recipe I'm using specifically said to keep the skin on until after the boiling, but peeling a heat-softened potato proved to be easier said than done.
I am going to find the mommy-blogger who wrote their recipe as such, and as soon as I do, we're a knife fight to the death in a parking lot!
On the bright side, the potatoes cut like BUTTAH
Now for assembly. I'm adding a teaspoon of vinegar,
As well as the green onions and celery
Oh jeez, the eggs!
It would seem that as consequence for not clicking my tongs together before usage, one of my eggs has decided to spontaneously erupt to shun me. Alas, I shan't be so incompetent!
Finally, I can throw the eggs (chopped, of course) into the mix
As stated before, I used a tad to much ingredients for how much I plan on eating tonight, so I am preemptively downsizing the sample. Seasoning with celery seeds, salt, and pepper!
Lastly, I'm adding a mix of mayonnaise and dijon mustard. I couldn't really tell where the "mustard" was in the infographic pic, so I'm assuming its in the salad.
BEHOLD!
Now for the actual sausage. I'm cooking on high heat in sesame oil
Fantastic
Looks like that's everything, onto assembly!
One heaping pile of potato salad,
I slightly more manageable pile of sauerkraut...now for the sausage!
VIOLA!
So, how did it taste?
I'm certain I messed up somewhere while making the salad, but I still think it tastes great. The eggs have proven a nice touch, giving a softer texture to contrast the firmer potatoes. You can never go wrong with sauerkraut on a hotdog, although I will admit the presence of the kraut kinda makes the mustard part feel redundant. The wiener was kind of basic, I'll have to see about getting my hands on some higher quality meat in the future.
I guess this would be the part where I rank it, right? Feels weird without the numbers, but I'll make do.
1. Germany
So...how am I going to go about the next weeks? I was thinking I'd let you guys vote in the comment section! Comment the country (in the infographic) you want for next Saturday, and whichever country has the most upvotes by Wednesday is the one I'll do!
Alright, that's it for now. Thanks so much for reading...
...and Happy April Fools!
TexasChick75
I have missed you!! I love hot dogs…you have picked well. I am going to try some o& these myself.
VendyMoviePrincess
I am so fucking excited!
ispendtomuchtimehere
just woke up from a nap where I was eating really good hot dogs and this shows up..I feel like it's a sign..
TheElicitor
Sanivia
you do realize that there are real german hotdogtypes? OP just picked a random sausage lunch with a bratwurst for the sauerkraut-shame. we do have buns we do have ketchup/mustard and we do have really good hotdog-wiener ! also - fck 1st april.
Tassyr
I desperately want to try the Korean one.
MRSHomerJSimpson
A @MrSwissroll Post!?
pootpootriot
I both love and hate you. I want this content weekly. I miss the sandwich chronicles something fierce.
GravyEducation
Swiss you dirty dog! I'm so happy. I literally made brats last night after shoveling. At work can't really read the whole post but I'll be back
Sultana
I think you’re just meant to pull off the potato skin once they’re boiled, not try to peel them. Just kinda hold some kitchen roll around the spud and shimmy the skin off. Love seeing you post again! My heart will break if it’s just April Fools
starlitspine
@OP - Sultana is right. I use a pair of silicone gloves to remove the skin after cooking, and it comes right off.
SeasonedCitizen
The Chicago style hot dog is the perfect hot dog. A close second is the Costco hot dog for it's bargain price.
TheForbiddenSemicolon
I hope they have a Costco where @MrSwissroll lives. It’s not on the list, but I think it’s worth his analysis.
chefchris357
Yay! It warms this chef's heart to see your posts again! The sandwich posts you did were just great!
GravyEducation
What's your favorite cuz mines Cubano. Well... I can't say no to the simplicity of the club. And I also like all the breakfast sandos in the world. Pulled pork.... got dang who can pick one
reverendbonobo
VIOLA!
quintessentialrob
Glad to see you back. I didn't realize a scramble dog was specifically a Georgia thing as I grew up there. I will say that it sometimes comes with slaw on top. The biggest thing is that you have to have a good chili recipe. That's my vote I guess. Have fun with it. Take care
GravyEducation
Chili dogs! Oh so good. Top contender for "if you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life". Also you sound like Rhett from GMM are you Rhett
quintessentialrob
I am not Rhett. I do enjoy a good chili dog though
Kaldak
@OP OMG please don't be an April fools joke! I have missed this so much! Please finish the list, I'm begging ya haha
Sultana
Exactly this!
michaelpencil
Hi from Germany. So, Dijon might not be the ideal Senf to use. Try Löwensenf next time. Or sweet Löwensenf, if ya nasty. (Also, we would put a blob of mustard just on the side, it's just missing in the pic, I assume.) Guten Appetit!
paladindansesgirlfriend
Is the amount of onion right? Seems like a lot
AmArschdieRaeuber
It's a matter of taste, but imo it's a bit much. Some recipes also use pickles and no celerey and sometimes without mustards. Also the Mayo used can be very important, I have the feeling that german Mayo is somewhat unique. Not sure though.
Uhmdidyoujustticklemyballs
Dude, please let the April fools be that you're joking this is April fools. I think we all miss your posts and witnessing you go through this process with such prose. We miss you dude!
GravyEducation
Pshh he's gonna do it or he's a bawk bawk. It's too good think of the points and the hot dogs
Alsbet
Pls don't be April fool's. Also that seattle dog description is painfully inaccurate.
inlovewiththecoco
Right?? Cream cheese, sauteed onions no?
Alsbet
Yes exactly this!
Mxlespxles
Glad to see ya back at it. Can't wait!
Lonnze
As a German I have some issues here.
DuncanHillsCoffee4Life
Welcome back! I always looked forward to winding down my Saturday nights with your posts. So glad you're back at it, I vote for Chicago Dog next week!
UltraHellboy
I’ll vote for Chicago, too!
GravyEducation
Minnesota votes for Chicago

Same but kids instead of dogs just to realize it's a damn April fools. +1 @MrSwissroll
olivertheoctopus
@op Mr Swiss! I was just lamenting the other day that I missed your weekly sandwich chronicles and even went in search of some other food ranking that I could try myself. Which I found. And then promptly forgot about :D glad to see you are well sir
olivertheoctopus
Also, I vote for the coney dog in case you’re -not- joking
GravyEducation
Coneeey! There's something about just fuck it here's cheese it doesn't even have to be melted. It's arguably better unmelted
elbowdeepinadictator
This is awesome!!!
elbowdeepinadictator
I squee'd outloud!
BanditKablooie
I can't even tell you how much I needed to see something enjoyable and fun tonight. Thank you, man!
GravyEducation
Yeah it was a shit one dude. I grabbed asphalt on an ice patch... winter was supposed to not be fucking us anymore. I hurt and if you don't continue this Monsieur Roll then TONIGHT WAS FOR NOTHING.
FeChefImgur
Mustard goes in the potato salad. Wholegrain is good if you've got it. You can also put diced pickles in it too.
GravyEducation
I recommend inglehoffers if you're not making your own crazy blend. All their mustards are divine
IthinkImOld
Japan! That just looks funny! FP worthy! Oh and I know it’s cold up there eh? But you gotta grill the dogs whenever you can.
GravyEducation
Oh grill is unbeatable but I said this in another comment, home kitchen peeps, boil and finish with a sear. Next best thing
CatatonicCowMoo
Yes seconded
GTAlex74
A new series, nice ! I'm looking forward to it ! - On a sidenote, the "France" is something I've literally never seen in France. The common way is : half baguette cut open, ketchup, mustard, barbecued merguez (if you like spicy) or chipolata (if you don't like spicy). If you buy it at an event, you'll likely have fries available as a side, if it's family / friends, you'll surely have 3 to 5 different type of salads on the table.
Zorrodidnothingwrong
Same with the Italian: it doesn't exist here. Maybe an American take on what the Italian should be?
flutterwry
Same with Germany. It’s a mess of cliches, but pretty much noone in Germany would eat hotdogs this way. Either it’s eaten boiled with potato salad (or maybe coleslaw) or eaten with mustard or ketchup in a crusty bun. Or we cut it, fry it and eat it with roast potatoes and fried egg. If a hotdog bun is eaten, we eat hotdogs with mustard, ketchup, crispy onions, pickles, mostly at IKEA. With sauerkraut and mash or potatoes (no potato salad) we eat Bratwurst, not hotdogs, neither boiled nor fried.
TgCCL
Am German. Can confirm. I've never seen a sausage eaten this way in my decades of living in this country.
yanalouisa
I think they are using the wrong kind of sausage. It should be a Bratwurst, which would fit perfectly with Sauerkraut and mustard (potato salad is not necessary). I eat that all the time. An actual Frankfurter sausage, however, should not be fried but instead be put in hot, non-boiling water and is consumed with ketchup and without Sauerkraut. Source: I’m German.
illmeetyouin2129
Oh, hell yeah. Hot dogs are legit my favorite food. I cannot wait for this. Since I have some extra characters here, I'll say that my favorite German-style potato salad has no mayo, but vinegar and bacon. Highly recommend it.
GravyEducation
It's the best! My work threw in some great greens, can't remember which, maybe chard. Honestly whatever they had it probably was never the same lol. Good mustard that's the trick
flutterwry
In Germany, there‘s a big argument about the right way to make potato salad. The south insists that mayo is a crime against humanity, the north doesn’t go anywhere without mayonnaise. And everyone has their own recipe, anyway. I make mine with fresh cucumber, egg and creme fraiche instead of mayo.
stonecoldpuma
I like the warm one with the vinegar dressing.
flutterwry
That’s a fine salad, indeed - even better if you add a few bacon bits. They offer this (homemade, not coming from a box) in Berlin at Scheers Schnitzel - if you are there, give it a try.
