I recently took my 4 year old phone to a guy to install a screen protector as the one I had was gnarly. He told me this was the original plastic I was supposed to removed when I bought the phone.

1st world problems.
Nah your phone. You get to peel it.
Tell him it is damaged and tou need a different one for the full experience.
I worked in the industry I'd be sooo pissed if someone did that to me lol...I'd always leave em on unless they needed me to put on a Screen protecter...and if I messed that up I'd grab a new one free of charge of course
My guess is that something like the reverse of this is the reason for it being part of their procedure. They might have left them on, customer starts using their phone without removing it and their touchscreen isn't responding 100%, or the plastic starts peeling/rips and looks bad and it gets returned/serviced. It might be dumb, but it ties up a little bit of resources. If you're getting in store service to be set up and not just buying a sealed box then it's a small thing.
I used to sell phones and I always asked the customers if they wanted to peel the plastic. that kind of small "gestures" is what created a pleasant experience for the customer with the seller imo
Nope, that guy was totally legit. You are eligible to peel only if you setup it yourself. If someone does it for you, you give up the right to do it to them.
I was shocked when I was buying a phone and the offer was there to peel and unbox, I said I don’t care. And they got to work, then explaining how some folks freak out if you do it for them
Sue!
You got a used phone.
People are animals!! Hope he returned it and got a new one.
You should always set up/transfer files over to your new phone. It's not that hard.
The worst is when the rep installs a bunch of apps they heard about fifteen years ago that are totally must haves, like battery savers that have been obsolete for so long and make things worse
Why would they ever have the audacity to do that?
Because its a service industry and they are "helping".
I'm upvoting cuz that sounds terrible/hilarious. But maybe, I'm lucky, cuz I don't recall ever running into that issue. I've had reps tell me what's ok to delete. Btw, fuck Samsung for always sneaking in some crapp games and apps on their updates.
Why do you pay someone to set it up? It's really not that difficult, and usually it's also well documented when you start it up first time...
"New phone day" is almost better than Christmas. The setup process is like... 80% of the fun.
I always asked people if they wanted me to or not, but with iPhones I would always at least tell them that the plastic cover already on the phone was not a protective film, and if they didn't remove it they wouldn't be able to hear calls properly because it covered the earpiece. No idea if Apple ever changed that or not.
If you buy it from someplace like an AT&T Store or Apple Store, the rep who sells it to you usually sets everything up so it's ready to make or receive calls before you leave the store.
Weird though I've always had my phones shipped to me
I buy mine from Walmart, and only take them to AT&T if I have a problem transferring to the new phone. So, basically never.
Horrible.
It’s optional, most people take the offer.
Mine was also peeled off. Then they put on the tempered glass screen protector. So win/win?
Did they charge you for the screen protector? I suspect they're taught to peel off the plastic as part of the effort to sell screen protectors.
They were having a special promotion at the time at the store I got my phone at, that when you bought the phone you would get a screen protector for free. However, at the time, they did not have any protectors for my phone as it was newly on the market for a week. So instead, I got the activation fee waived. I did find the screen protector (same day) at a different store. Went back to the first store, and be installed it there as they have the proper equipment to prevent dust getting under it.
Charged me $0 for the installation. I did have to install the case myself. That one was not an issue at all.
...activation fee for your phone, like you've paid for it but they are like yes you own it but if you want to actually use it that costs extra? Do you not just buy it put in your sim and it works?
You don't just own the thing you paid for.
This has got to be a US thing or some apple bs I've never heard of before
"proper equipment to prevent dust" they used an alcohol wipe lol
What!? You don't think they have a clean room in the back?

Why let someone else do the setup in the first place?

You let someone else set up your phone?

Break into their home and shit on their couch. It's the only civilized response society has left us.

Same with mine. I assume they do this because leaving it on makes the screen less sensitive. TBH, if I was a guy being paid minimum wage by Best Buy to do that all day, I'd probably take it off too. Or maybe I wouldn't; depends on whether they audit how many get done in a day.
