Warning super graphic. Jk! When she is feeling extra playful, Daisy will put your hand in her mouth. She never bites down. We taught her bite inhibition when she was a puppy. When they are babies, you practice putting your hand into their mouth and if they bite down at all, you sharply say “ouch!” This is the same as when their litter mates would yelp to say “hey that’s too rough!” when playing. You do this so they learn never to bite down on you, when playing or when you need to look in their mouths, examine teeth etc. It has been a great training practice for her!

FP edit: wow thanks guys!! You’ll be glad to know that while I was posting this Daisy and the toddler teamed up to get a stick of butter off the counter and both enjoyed about half of it before I realized it was too quiet... XD

Fuck pit bulls

It's the chihuahuas you gotta watch out for!

My pit mutt is the sweetest girl, but she had NO bite inhibition when we adopted her. It took a few months for play biting to stop hurting.

This is the kind of pitty owner I love to see. Thank you for being such a good ambassador.

I normally don’t condone vicious pit bull attacks but I’ll allow this ;)

Good training.

Brutal!!

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Pitbulls have a bad name for a good reason: when they DO attack they are physically built to do maximum damage...good possibility of death.

So, how are you adjusting to life missing a hand? Is your love monster helping you?

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 7

I used to work in doggy day care. Of all the dogs I've dealt with pit bulls were always little balls of happiness, and the best behaved.

6 years ago | Likes 172 Dislikes 11

We had our pit get rejected from a place bc they said he was too energetic. I actually was watching on the cam right before they removed 1

6 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 3

Poor pup :/ he just wants to play, he doesn't understand why he was removed. Sucky humans.

6 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

him and he was running around with two yellow labs who were being just as energetic as him. I'm fairly certain it was his breed as there 2

6 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 3

were no other pits there and my dog is energetic but no more than a normal young dog. :( 3/3

6 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 3

PSA pitbulls are a menace to society and this gif is living proof. Won’t someone think of the children?!?

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 6

Ok I get your joking, but seriously people should just get other dogs, most are nice and gentle just the power of a pit bull is scary (1/2)

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

And there a plenty of dogs to choose from other than one bred to be able to inflict massive damage (1/2)

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

Not if you're trying to adopt....its like 80% pitbulls, and if you want a large dog closer to 100%

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Any other tips to train bite inhibition when saying ouch doesn't work?

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

I used to immediately get up and walk away when my bullmastiff got too rough. They soon figure out that biting hard = no more play time.

6 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Agree with everyone saying stop playing. It can also helps to do this with decreasing pressure over time. Once they’ve learned not to 1/

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Bite, if they ever do get so stressed out they do bite, it’s less likely to be a hard bite. My pibble mix plays like the one in the video 2/

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

(Mouthing, 0 pressure), my Weimaraner mix doesn’t play bite at all. But I once stressed her to the point of biting (my fault, she had 3/

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Swallowed a sock and I was trying to get peroxide in her so she didn’t end up with a blockage), and even freaked out, with my hands in 4/

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Her mouth, she used almost no pressure.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

when they are still very small i stick my finger on the mouth and when they bite i tap their snout and say "no!" i repeat until they lick1/

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

basically giving positive reinforcement for the good behavior. very effective for small pups.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Do a quick loud “YIP” and stop play. Then return to play shortly after. This is what other dogs do to signal too rough play. 1/2

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Then add words like easy or gentle when they stop. Expect to do this A LOT. Pups are basically land sharks but they will catch on.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah I am expecting it, some days the training goes great then others feel like progress is going backwards. 1/

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Least he is a good pup and already gotten the hang of going toilet outside and not wherever he pleases. So I have hope for him

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You’ll all do great Puppy stage always wore me out but well behaved doggos are so worth it.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

How old is the pup?

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

About 12 weeks old

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Ah okay this is prime Ouch time then. Other advice here is valid, but I would also advise finding an older doggy friend to help out w play

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've taken him to meet my cousins dog unfortunately he is lazy which did not help in the slightest ?

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

1. Say "ouch" or whatever and stop interacting with them, turn around/shun them or walk away. Make it clear this is not how we play. 1/?

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

2. Also try making it uncomfortable/hard for them to bite, ball your hand into a fist or try to gag them a bit. 3. Just kinda gently 2/?

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

jam an appropriate chew toy in their mouth and try to make it seem like a fun alternative and... 4. Patience. Puppies bite and it's hard 3/4

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

to teach them not to while they are teething. Just keep training and hopefully it will all come together once they have their adult teeth /4

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Unfortunately when I try stuff like this with my 12 week old he will learn not to bite, but by the next day it no longer works.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

(tho not sure if the teething is causing this rather than lack of obedience as other commands such as sit and lie down stick with him) 2/

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's honestly probably that they are 12 weeks old. It takes time and puppies chew, teething is worse. My shepherd was a landshark until 1/2

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

he was around 7 months old and had his adult teeth. Then in a matter of days he stopped biting. Be patient and keep at it! You got this. /2

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Do you know around what age your shepherd started to loose his puppy teeth?

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A book I used a ton and really liked is Training the Best Dog Ever by Dawn Sylvia Stasiewicz. All about positive reinforcement and not

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

2”punishing” but the removal of the reward, like stopping play immediately when they bite too hard and don’t listen to “ouch”

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Saying “ouch” is positive punishment.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Some dogs get more excited with a yelp or an 'ouch!'. The game ends when they put teeth on you. Walk away, become un-fun, do not engage.

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I will try walking away, just need the rest of the house to all use one method to enforce that biting is bad

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

If yours will chase you and keep biting, employ baby gates or a door.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

When he gets to bad I put him in the crate for a minute to calm down

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That works too! So long as the game ENDS, he'll figure it out. You don't even need to put him away too long, just til he calms down.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've been attacked by two dogs. Both Pitbulls. Both times required several surgeries. One was a partial face reconstruction 1/2

6 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 9

They are physically bred specifically to do maximum damage. They are NOT safe to have around children, I don't care what anyone says.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 4

They are gorgeous, beautiful dogs but because of strength and tenacity an absolute nightmare if trained to be aggressive. I'm so sorry.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

Yeah. Thinking about what my pit would be like if she were trained to be aggressive is absolutely terrifying, and she's only 42 lbs.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

These dogs are physically bred for one thing and one thing only: killing. I also thought they were safe once... until mine turned on me.

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 4

Both times late at night as I walked home from work. I can't trust any dogs now. A healthy fear of almost all dogs.

6 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 9

Yep. What people forget is that while pitts may normally be gentle, when they DO attack, unlike other dogs, you stand no chance.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I was also attacked by a pit bull, got lucky that he clamped down on the back of my shoe. Another person had to pry him off me.

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Really sorry that happened, hope you can trust dogs again someday, I know it will be hard, but there's a lot of good doggos out there.

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

I’m so sorry that’s so awful!! It is sad but true that many pits are taught to be aggressive. I’m so sorry that happened to you!

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

I think posts like "aww, vicious pit bull attack" are exasperating for some because they're perceived as diminishment of these scenarios.

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Oh I wouldn’t want to diminish that for anyone!! That’s not my intent at all! I’m sorry if anyone felt that way

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

To be clear, I didn't think that's what you meant. But stuff like it has been used in reply to pit bull attacks.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I suppose people get peripherally caught up in the joke.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

100% of the pitbulls I've met were in like the top 20 nicest dogs I've come across. Strong as hell, but oh so goddamn sweet and lovable.

6 years ago | Likes 583 Dislikes 16

And all the worse dogs are stupid little things

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

The sweetest pup I ever meet a pitbull boxer mix and she was a big girl, Martha, up past my knees and a rusty red coat, ft+ wide shoulders

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

I’m living with somebody who has a Pit-Rot mix and he is the cutest, sweetest most cuddly snuggle bug ever

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 3

My sister's pit is the sweetest girlie, but man is she exhaustingly energetic...

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

Part of it is that most people who own unfriendly aggressive pitbulls know to keep them away from bad situations.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Agreed. Same goes for any other breed as a good pet owner.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I've been bit by three dogs in my life. A Chihuahua, a Maltese, & a long haired rat devil straight from hell weighing in at about 9 pounds.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

I hate that pitbulls get a bad wrap. It's the owners that suck sometimes + not the dogs fault or "instinct".

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

Same! Seems like they'd lick you to death then finish you off with those damn tails, lol

6 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

All the pits I’ve met have been sweet and super strong! Daisy’s kinda small 45lbs or so but built like a tank so good to have her trained!

6 years ago | Likes 94 Dislikes 3

have you ever had problems with pulling when walking? can't break mine of it at all.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes that is something we struggle with! She just is so happy to go out on the leash. The miracle worker for us was the gentle leader. She 1

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

2actually does better staying attentive to us off leash so I like to take her somewhere where she can be off leash.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My pit is 90 lbs. Hes super nice, but I'm well aware of the fact that he could tear my arm off if he wanted to. It's about respect.

6 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

Mine's 42 lbs (she's only 75% pit) but holy crap, she is strong. Damn near dislocates my shoulder when she lunges for squirrels.

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

I don't own a Pit Bull but instead have this little Furball, she just barks a lot!

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Mine is 75lbs and would drag me around if I didn't lean back with ALL my weight. We're working on that tho.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The gentle leader was a miracle worker for us!!! If you haven’t you should try it

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Is it a leash

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It is a strap that goes over their snout that your leash attaches to. With some dogs a harness is an invitation to pull. If used right 1

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

2it isn’t painful but dogs don’t like the sensation.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

2it isn’t painful but dogs don’t like the sensation. Brand is gentle leader

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My sister's pitbulls (2) ran away and killed 3 sheep, they were great dogs but the one time they act up is their only time.

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Yikes!! Yeah I don’t think I’d be comfortable owning a dog that spilled blood like that

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

All Pits i have met had a fear of storms, 1st sound of thunder & they are under the bed

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 3

Mine has never cared about that, but if you blow a raspberry he will freak the fuck out. Yes life is tough for him with 2 toddlers.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

i have two pibbles. one is deathly afraid of storms, and the other one is afraid of my electric tooth brush.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Unpopular opinion: I do recognize, the pitbulls can be sweet and lovable, however I believe their breeding should be stopped. These dogs /1

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

are like a loaded gun with a mind of its own. 99/100 times it won't pose a threat. But in the 100th time scenario there will be blood. /2

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

Any dog has that capability though. However I agree the breeding for aggressive traits should be stopped but you’ll never stop the dog 1

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

2fighting rings and people who think it’s bad ass to own an aggressive dog.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

I'm more concerned about keeping the pits as pets than them participating in dog fights. Of course, any dog can harm to a man, but pit's /1

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Just be careful of their tails - dem whips of death!

6 years ago | Likes 56 Dislikes 1

Like a bull whip!! :D

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yep. I leave my friend's home with bruises on my legs. Problem is that that tail NEVER STOPS. Such a sweetie, though.

6 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

My chocolate lab is the same. That post about the dog that wagged too hard comes to mind.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The one where the dog broke his tail by wagging too hard?

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The Best Man at my wedding owns a pitbull named Panzer. If you say, "FIRE!" he barks once really loudly in the direction you are pointing.

6 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 2

When I was about 7 my neighbor's pit bull attacked me. I was 7 so I didn't really provoke him I was just crawling around on all 4s 1/?

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Grabbed me by my shoulder and swung me around like a stuffed animal. For a while before they were able to get him off me. Ever since 2/?

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I've been terrified of pit bulls. But I haven met another pit bull who wasn't sweet. I think it's more about how their raised 3/3

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

That’s terrible!! Irresponsible owners to let a dog be around a little kid that way. Sorry that happened to you!

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I actually felt bad cause I found out a few years later that the dog was put down. I shook uldnt have been crawling around like that I guess

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

I have a pit mix, but I have met some bad ones. I had to fight off two pitbulls when I had my paper route.

6 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 2

My sister dumped her pitbull on me saying she couldn't afford him. She didn't tell me he was extremely dog aggressive. Also anyone he 1/2

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Didn't know he would basically attack. I learned the hard way. I had to put him down after he bit me in the face when I was trying to 2/3

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Give him a bath. He would also challenge my boyfriend. It killed me to put him down but he was just so violent be and unpredictable. ☹️

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

That’s sad! Sometimes there are some dogs that can’t be retrained. Sorry you had to go through that!

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah honestly they can be really scary. I have a really nice one, but half I’ve met have been really sketch.

6 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

I have so far only met nice ones but man i hope I'll never meet an angry one. They're powerful dogs and probably stronger than me

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

More than welcome to checkout what a mix did to my dog. I only have hate for the owners who do not know how to train their dog.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Im so sorry about your dog. I hope he’s okay. That easily could have been deadly.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I went on a walk recently with friends and their dog. One jumped out of a moving car window to attack it. Had to be hospitalized.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeh yeh sweet harmless pibble. I've met wonderful pitbulls. I've also had pets killed by other ones. Pretending they aren't capable of

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 8

You are correct. If badly trained or taught aggression they're very dangerous but most are just beyond sweet.

6 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 3

I had family raise a 7 week old puppy, gently as can be. No spankings, all positive reinforcement. At seven years old she attacked and

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 4

nearly killed my aunt. Out of nowhere. With zero provocation. Some dogs really ARE wired wrong, and thanks to bad breeders, there's no

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 4

way of knowing if /that/ backyard bred pit has that bad wiring or not until suddenly they go. It isn't only how you raise them.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 4

They are thankfully, a minority. But as more and more asshats breed more and more unhealthy dogs, the numbers are rising.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

You make some valid points and I hope people read your entire comment and not just the first one. 1/2

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That’s why it’s important to meet the dog parents and the human parents. This will help predict but not determine the nature of the pup.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They won't. It's a touchy subject and anything negative vs any pit = HATE THE BREED. No I hate bad breeders. Ideally you want the

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

grandparents too; if you can go back three generations without temper problems or health problems, BROADLY that pup will be fine.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

But that one's reasonably hard to pull off with dog lifespans + number of dogs it leads to.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Of course she is capable of being dangerous. They all are. Hence the importance of training like bite inhibition. It greatly lowers the 1

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

2chance they will bite in any situation, not just play. My experience with pits is that their general nature is sweet. But they were

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

3bred to fight bulls after all and that makes them good for training to be aggressive. Mix that strength & tenacity with bad or lazy people

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

4and you’ve got trouble. Daisy only “wouldn’t hurt a fly” because I’ve taught her to be respectful. She will lick you to death though ;)

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

being dangerous is pants on head stupid. Some are sweet. Others can and WILL do serious if not lethal harm. This 'oh she's haaarmless" shit

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 5

Blame the idiots who breed them to be nothing more than ghetto burglar alarms.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

I have been, extensively.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

or worse "she'll kill you with kisses!" is just as stupid. Yes your dog is gentle. With you, and people it likes. Plenty of others aren't.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 6

I've seen gentle sweet lovebugs, and I've seen and experienced the vicious monstrosities the news likes to rant about. They're both pits.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 5

Every breed has that one ignorant asshole "Oh, he/she's harmless!" owner who lets their dogs run amuck off leash.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

Everyone's met that one lab owner. The one who screams their dog is friendly as the dog charges you, hair up, teeth bared and snarling.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1
