TL;DR at the bottom.

He was in his early/mid-twenties, always had people coming and going since he lived alone and his parents bought the condo for him (to keep him out of their hair) so he had free reign to do whatever. There were a couple of dealers who moved in last summer and there were anywhere from 5-10+ different people coming and going every day and I'm having to leave my SO and our newborn alone to go to work. After they left it was basically a carousel of people staying and despite almost a year of complaints, his parents wouldn't step in and do anything at all. Even after his father said if he got too problematic they would kick him out and sell the place he called back like 2 hours later and basically said there was no problem with him "having friends over."

Two weeks ago, a guy who'd been living there off and on for about 2 months was parked right in front of the building dealing drugs to some rando while our neighbor was in the passenger seat. The dealer got arrested like an hour later but they'd already taken my neighbor to work so he skated by untouched. My landlord informed his parents but they never responded and never bothered to even come by and check things out.

Until 2 days ago.

On Friday, his parents finally came by and dude was dead. An apparent overdose. Estimates are he had died some time on Wednesday which weirds me the hell out. Nearly 2 days of playing with the baby on the living room floor, sitting on the couch playing playing games, watching tv, talking to my SO, and the whole time, he was dead on his couch 10 feet below us...

I'd even had the thought that morning that it was really nice how quiet he'd been the past couple of days.

TL;DR Problem neighbor overdosed and lay dead downstairs for 2 days before he was found.

FP Edit: Wow. First time on the front page. Send me some cool recipes to try!

I spoke to a member of the Home Owner's Association a little bit ago. It seems, since arrests were made, the HOA had the evidence they needed to force his parents to do something, so they sent them an email basically stating that because arrests were made involving people witnessed in the company of their son for extended periods of time, they had to act.

They showed up to find him about 2 hours later. I don't want to think about how long he would've sat down there if not for that email...

and to that I say: it is what it is.

Available condo then?

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Tl;Dr I am assuming you killed your neighbor.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Better 2 days than a month. During a heat wave. Decomp is a smell you NEVER forget.

5 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

It’s ok to be relieved AND mourn the death of a young man. You can be glad you don’t have to deal with him AND be sad it ended like this.

5 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

those parents enabled their son to death. they absolutely suck.

5 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

He's dead......problem solved....move on.

5 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 6

Means he ain't coming back either, sounds good to me

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

If not for the email, he would have sat there until you had smelt it. Unless you had covid. Then it could have been a really long time.

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I was a residential landlord for 15+ yrs. At least 4 of my former tenants are dead.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Why don’t you have them picked up?

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It’s okay to feel relieved while also sympathetic. Just because he died doesn’t make his shit stink less

5 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Meh, fuck him. Live your life

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

My heroin-addicted cousin stole from my grandma, threatened her. He has 2 kids (that we know of). Always in jail. He is shite

5 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

At least you know it and aren't enabling him. I hope he can get his life together for your sake.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Awful situation for everyone inlcuding the dead neighbor, wish we had come up already with a better way of treating addiction and depression

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The poor guy wrote his own story, and made it a short one. Alas, there are many like him.

5 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Now he gonna haunt the condo....

5 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 2

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Put some signs up for the drug Seekers so they can be turned away and buy the condo below you and make a super condo.

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Death. The one thing we are all guaranteed.

5 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

The IRS has entered the chat...

*Only for poor people

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I used to be in that life. Just because people do drugs doesn't make them shitty people

5 years ago | Likes 72 Dislikes 11

U are right. Please read my post

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Drugs are fine. Having 15-20 random people coming and going at all times isn't.

5 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 3

9 times out of 10, you're a shitty person, you just don't realize it. It's ok though, the "normal" people around will do their best to help.

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

This

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

I like how the person doing the drugs may not be bad but it attracts a criminal element if hes dealing, which is bad to have near your home.

5 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 1

You can usually tell immediately which is which, though. And let's be clear, there's a lot of overlap between drug use and shitty people.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It can when they’re addicted and do shitty things to others for it. Dealt with it before. Shitty family members still shitty after it.

5 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

dead and given a wooden onesie !!

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Wooden onesie.. I'm stealing that

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So there's a condo going cheap below you then?

5 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 2

Dick head

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Buy it and live in a super condo

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

This is a good idea. However signs must be put up to run off the drug Seekers for the next year or so

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Weird how this is almost the same as what happened to us...only our neighbour was on his sofa, other side of the wall rather than downstairs

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

If you hadn't said he was downstairs I would have believed you were the neighbours two doors down from me ?

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

lol, yikes, that's so much worse! I'm just glad I didn't follow his dad back downstairs. I never would've shaken that image from my brain.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We found out because police were outside our door at 2am with his cousin and they were being pretty loud... Thought police had gone but ...

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They were still there, so what my partner assumed was them being loud as usual was actually the police so they came knocking after he...

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Shouted at them to be quiet as it's the middle of the night (but not as nicely) ... They then took his statement ?‍♀️ they didn't follow up

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Honestly, had his parents actually checked in on all the reports you gave them they may still have had their son... So this isn't on you.

5 years ago | Likes 222 Dislikes 3

Definitely not on OP but I think it's a bit unfair to blame parents either. Could they do more, yes, but it was his fault.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The neighbors parents def. enabled him and hopefully are self aware enough to realize their role, altho the guilt will eat them alive.

5 years ago | Likes 70 Dislikes 0

Parents who do that, often 'secretly' wish he dies so he can stop being a bother.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

He may have refused treatment previously as well, we don’t know. They enabled but most ppl have a hard time making their child homeless.

5 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Is it bad that I hope they realize this? It's probably bad, I'm a bad person.

5 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 0

As a former cops/courts reporter, I saw most convicts have doting moms: "my boy could never have done that. You're just out to get him."

5 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

As a former teacher, I saw a lot of parents say the same; I'm sure many of them would go on to be the cases you're thinking about.

5 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

I also taught. So many kids I wished I could just take home & give a structured life. So many parents want "A" grades kids never earn.

5 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

His poor parents. They were CLEARLY told again and again and now they have to bury their son. I assume they’re RACKED with guilt.

5 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 1

That's the funny thing about life, you can ignore reality all you want, but it doesn't care. They KNEW there was a problem, and likely 1/

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

that he was on drugs as well. They refused to act, and so this happened. Their refusal to accept the reality put them here.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Maybe, but drug addiction is hard. He was an adult and nobody can help you until you are ready.

5 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Judging by the way they reacted to complaints I’m thinking they put it all on him

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm sure the guilt is made worse by the tiny bit of relief they are not able to suppress.

5 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Depends on the context of the situation. They may have had no idea what he was involved with.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Damn. I feel that.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

A parents love is uncditional. I feel for them too

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I have learned in my life that things like that will work themselves out given enough patience.

5 years ago | Likes 94 Dislikes 6

My parents said that about my dad's mom before I was even born. Now my dad's dead and I'm grown and his mom is still alive.

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I live in a rough neighborhood, and this was weirdly inspiring.

5 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Causing a lot of potential damage meanwhile.

5 years ago | Likes 38 Dislikes 0

That sounds like it’s not their problem. Good riddance.

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Could be any of us, given a few poor life choices.

5 years ago | Likes 112 Dislikes 16

Yes, any of us could move somewhere with a problem neighbour. We should be thankful.

5 years ago | Likes 42 Dislikes 6

Or choking on a pizza roll at 2am alone.

5 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Google self heimlich. It's not hard and might save you from dying the dumbest death

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

How am I gonna google it when I'm choking to death??

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

...that's why you google it now

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ultimately it was on him. But it looks like his parents were enablers. Drug addiction is a disease and addicts need a good support system.

5 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 3

Addiction is a disease. Full stop. The rest of that sentence is ignorant dribble

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes, this smells of morbid affluenza.

5 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Generally before one can change, one must face consequences. It seems his first real consequence was death.

5 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Well you are right, his learning curve was way too steep. My diagnosis was mostly from his parents' style of enabling

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Lying dead for two days is weird with all these 'friends'. My guess is that none of his guests was eager to talk to the police.

5 years ago | Likes 359 Dislikes 1

Had living this sort of lifestyle when i was younger, your right. Which is a shame because the likelihood of you getting in trouble for

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Calling an ambulance because someone is ODing is really low.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Reminds me of Jesse pinkman's house post Gail

5 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

This happened to a buddy of mine. He overdosed and his "friends" looted him and ditched him. A head injury was cause for more investigation+

5 years ago | Likes 51 Dislikes 0

And they arrested a dude for obstruction

5 years ago | Likes 38 Dislikes 0

Wow. Yeah, I was really hoping against hope that he was alone so it would be an overdose and not something more sinister.

5 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

They didnt really know whether he hit his head on the way down or if someone else did

5 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Bet lots of kids could be saved if they werent so afraid of getting in trouble instead of getting help when your friend dies in front of you

5 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

My brother was ODing one night and his friends locked me out of my own house and took my cell phone because I wanted to call for help

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

It’s a sad thing. He was probably trying to horde the loneliness with drugs and ‘friends’

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The more we saw him and his interactions with people, a lot of it seems it came down to that.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Just found out a few hours ago that he was hitting heroin hard. I thought it was crack or meth, but he was deep in a spiral. Sad.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah really sad

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

He practically refused to be alone. Even when one person left, hours or minutes and someone else was there to stay a few days.

5 years ago | Likes 140 Dislikes 0

And for basically nobody to pop in after he died makes me feel pretty strongly that someone was with him when it happened.

5 years ago | Likes 144 Dislikes 0

It was Walter motha fuckin White. He was there.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Typically when people are using very heavily, they want to have someone with them so they can watch each other for ODing.

5 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

Obviously it varies, but this is not uncommon. Addicts aren't as oblivious as one may think

5 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

They’re people too, but also addicts.

5 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

I am honestly not sure what the proper response is to this. So let's just assume I gave it, okay?

5 years ago | Likes 1808 Dislikes 2

So, you neighbor is single now, right?

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Exactly

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Same.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sorry for your loss!

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

For what it’s worth, I’m 100% satisfied with your response.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Let's further assume this is a reply telling you how thoughtful and spot-on your response was.

5 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

Beautiful, touching words. What impeccable judgment, as well as an amazing capacity for empathy of all parties. Bardcrest 2024!

5 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 1

I think the proper response is vaguely sympathetic noises. Hard to transcribe into text.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

We could all learn from the kind words of @Bardcrest . Truly a light in dark times.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

There is no response. We need free, secular rehabilitation. Not punishment for users. Until that, deaths will be high.

5 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Shit happens and people die. I wouldnt dwell on it.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If imgur has taught me anything, it's probably "that's rough buddy"

5 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I think it's "Whelp!?" With your eyebrows raised and your hands and shoulders in a shrug motion

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Fair enough.

Midnight Gospel is well worth the watch, they talk about death in a few episodes

5 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

You've done it

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I feel kinda sad that all those people, he probably thought were friends, didn't even notice he was dead. Addiction is a lonely life

5 years ago | Likes 89 Dislikes 0

I’m sure they knew but didn’t want any part of it. Still very sad.

5 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 0

Makes me think of the ending of the great Gatsby where no one shows up to the funeral and one guy is still living in the house but doesn't.

My sis was dead for 2 days before they found her and we couldn't do open casket due to decomposing.

5 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Had a neighbor die and wasn't found for like a week. It was pretty bad.

5 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Had the same happen a few houses down from me. Bio hazard team had to gut the guys house ?

Yeah same here. Ppl in bio suits showed up to remove the body. They thought he was a black guy. He was white.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think you mean liquify, he was already decomposing.

It could be worse. Heard of an navy vet who bills were set to autopay. They found him in his apartment after he had been dead 3 years

As a bio-recovery technician (dead body clean up) I can most certainly tell you they would have already been decomposing...

5 years ago | Likes 68 Dislikes 1

Wait, how does one get into this line of work?

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Definitely not the same as a 3 week old decomp but still not fun.

5 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 0

My husband does this, too. Horrifying to me, but someone has to do it!
