This man's name is Montrell Jackson. He died one year ago today, along with two other officers, in an ambush shooting in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. I had the extraordinary privilege of knowing him and working with him for a mere four months. In that time I came to respect him and hope that we would become friends. He exemplified all of the values that I respect, admire and to which I strive.

A lot has been written about him in the media. He has received the attention and respect that a fallen hero should receive. This is a picture of him with his son Mason. Have you ever seen a prouder father? I only met his wife, Trenisha, after his death. She has impressed me with her grace and poise through such a difficult time. She called him her Superman, and he always told me that she was too good for him.

This is how I remember him. He was a huge man, and would have been easily intimidating if it wasn't for how much he laughed. His laugh filled a room and was infectious. Man, it was hard not to like him.

My company put up this sign in his memory. I was very proud the day we did this.

Montrell's last Facebook post dealing with the aftermath of the Alton Sterling shooting went viral. I do not want to include the whole thing here. You can easily look it up if you are interested, but this post is about Montrell and I want to focus on him. In his post he asked "Please, don't let hate infect your heart." This is an incredibly powerful message, and I think it has made me a better person. I think its important that more people hear it.

The opposite of hate is love, and this man loved others. John 15:13 says "Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends." And that is exactly what Cpl. Montrell Jackson did.

He was one of us, a lurker. Imgur has an amazing history of remembering heroes that gave their life to protect others. I am asking that Imgur help me remember this man, spread his memory and message of love, and NEVER FORGET.

Thank you for taking a moment to read this.

God speed.

"The opposite of love is not hate, but indifference"

Why is it that it's always the good cops that suffer for the crimes of the bad ones.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I remember this very well.

Much respect to officer Jackson . Rip

We have complete control of our actions but not of the fruit from them. Keep your head up.

Sterling was a career criminal that resisted arrest, fought with the cops, had a gun in his pocket. And Obama took time to meet his family.

Montrells wife has poise? A M A Z I N G ! Dark Souls 3 players need to find her secret to having poise!

I do realize I'm being insensitive though. Sorry about the loss...

God I hated living there.

We remember. May his family know peace and his memory always be a blessing.

I miss Montrell, he was a great friend.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

I'm glad another of his friends saw this.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Not saying this isn't sad but cops are routinely losing the trust of the public. Look at the incidences from this past week.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 40

Not sure that's relevant here to OP's intentions of the post: to simply honor one of the good cops who have been lost.

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

He looks like a nice guy. Thanks for sharing and keeping his memory alive.

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

Thank you for your help doing the same. Lets keep holding the good people up as rold models.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I love post's like this. It reminds me not to be an asshole - we are humans and we are all flawed. Humility, respect. I'll honor his memory.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

Thank you. I try to do the same thing.

In the past week a cop shot 2 service dogs while illegally in someone's back yard and a mother was killed after calling the cops.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 38

How is this relevant to the purpose of this post?

8 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 2

Tell Mrs. Jackson that I'm sorry for her loss and I am for real.

Don't let the liberal media tell you how to feel! If you got hate in your heart, let it out

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

it sucks seeing people die but younger people die

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thanks for not telling us how he died. Not like we'd want context or anything.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 9

He died in an ambush on the police. If you would like some more context, you may find it below. But I wanted to make this a positive post.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

That's good, but I feel a call for positivity is cheapened if there's no apparent reason. I'm sure others feel the same. Thanks you.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 7

I'm so sorry for your loss and the loss of everyone that knew him. The only thing to do is go on in a way the breeds the kind of love (1/2)

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

he had in him and shared with the world. I obviously didn't know him personally, but he seems like a brace and kind man.

*brave

He was a good guy. I liked him.

Thank You Officer Montrell for your service, and for keeping my daughter safe.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Montrell's absence has left a hole in this city. Also thank you crwoosley for this post and the memorial today.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I just saw this, mr Kives. That you for your family’s friendship.

@OP, my father was a cop. Different color skin on the outside, but we are the same on the inside.

I fucking hate violence... can't we just accept everyfuckingthing and just be done. This great dude perished because of some "thugs". Fuck.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 3

He was a good guy.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Thank you for this post. It's hard to believe it's been a year already.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think calling people "thugs" is part of the problem. Labeling people as anything but human is what causes hate. Not trying to preach :)

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 11

SPEECH IS NOT THE PROBLEM. The lack of a responsible upbringing and moral training is. Enough of the PC Police already!!!

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

Anyone capable of taking a life for selfish means isn't human.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

To be flawed is to be human. We have to remember that even the worst of us are still human. I don't blame you for your way of thinking (1/2)

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

its easier to dehumanize, and I've been like that before too. It wasn't easy for me to learn to change that, but I'm glad I did.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I certainly don't agree with them at all, but everyone's human, and everyone's broken. They were blinded by rage and greed. This doesn't 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Make them evil, and doesn't make them unredeemable. Hate and anger, no matter how righteous, only breeds hate and anger. (2/2)

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I wish I could say and believe there is less hate today one year later.

8 years ago | Likes 173 Dislikes 8

The comment above yours proves that there is still a lot of hate. But there are still good people too.

8 years ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 0

what was the comment?

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

'Write a comment'

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It gets worse every year :(

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 6

Seriously...

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think it'll get better since a lot of hate is caused by MSM. An0maly touches on it here (Warning: Political) https://youtu.be/V62s5hgi-Zk

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 6

*sigh*. Imgur always downvotes anything that's Trump related that might be positive without even giving it a chance. You all are /1

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

so against hate, but aren't willing to even give it a chance to let go of it yourselves. /2

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Rejection of reality is not the path forward. Ignorance may help people let go of hate, but it also allows evil minds to flourish unopposed.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's not a rejection of reality. There are many good reasons why people support Trump that aren't fueled by hate. Don't assume /1

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

that half the US populace are ignorant bigots. That only leads to more hate and division. /2
