I got a new phone last winter, and I never realised it didn't have a 3.5mm headphone jack until today, when I wanted to listen to music on a walk in the (relatively) nice spring weather. I don't have any wireless headphones, so I pulled out this MiniDisc player I bought in 2002.

Thankfully I remembered to remove the AA battery from it before storing it away, so there was no corrosion inside, and it started right up when I put a fresh one in.

I have an MZ-R55. Transferring CDs *digitally* from a Discman, automatically creating separate tracks and then just deleting or moving them!

Im still very irritated that these didn't last. Mine was (and is) robust as fuck, solid machines. I loved them

I liked the tech but it was expensive. And then when I had money I hated Sony for their rootkit mess a few years later.

Yeah, you're not wrong there :)

I use a Sony Xperia phone for its jack =)

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Dude i still have that same model. Still works after 20 years

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yeah, they really seem to be built to last.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I had one of these!

Heads up for all the MD fans. You can now burn on NetMDs without that buggy SonicStage software. Search "Web Mini disc" by Stefano Brilli

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

WHAT!? Brilliant, thank you!!

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ah, now this looks quite interesting. Much appreciated, thanks! :)

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No problem. I was thrilled when I found it. Really makes the format more usable

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

One of my previous cars actually had MD as an option. You could have a tape deck section of the head unit, or CD, or MD. I have no idea 1/

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

which level of MD is was, as the manual didn't bother to include this info, and I had the CD option. 2/2

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The net md player! Always wanted to get the net md. Had the entertainment system one & standard player as a bundle. Those things rocked!

Xmas "99 my brother got the mini disk on post and I got the rio 500 mp3 player. Not sure who won that one. Both of us.

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

People were all like, " dont get it. Waste of money. It's never going to take off." Well, who's laughing now!

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

:D

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Man I use to have one of those!!

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There are USB DAC dongles that you can use with phones. Don't cost a lot either. You can still use your good wired headphones or earbuds.

3 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I had one for my pixel 3, absolutely HATED needing to use it. Such a pointless pain in the ass lol. Got a phone with a jack, not goin back.

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Yeah, I'm going to take a look at some options to see what's available. Will keep this in mind, thanks.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I got one on order by a brand called ESR. It's got a USB C power input as well as the 3.5mm output. Charge at the same time as listening.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Thanks, I'll take a look.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I still have my old cassette player, works and all. It's just fun to listen old mixtapes every once in a while.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Indeed.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I miss Mini-Disc

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I bought a Sony MD because I saw “Freestyler” by Bomfunk MC's! Good times! https://youtu.be/ymNFyxvIdaM

The 2019 remake video also has a great cameo...

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Hehe, I'd never seen that before.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

my prized possession was the Sony Minidisc car deck. I used to rattle the neon license frame on my ford contour with my dual 12” subs. ?

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

My 87 Integra, and my 70 Spitfire. I loved my MDs

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

This one! I think it’s still in my basement somewhere. https://www.minidisc.wiki/equipment/sony/auto/mdx-c5400

Have you seen that unfamiliar circling yet baka Shinji?

Ceiling*

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

How did you never listen to anything on your phone with headphones for a year+?! That is wild my dude.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I only got it in November so I've not really been going out for walks. I do use Bluetooth with the phone in the car though.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Ohhhhh I was thinking last winter as in January 2022. That makes way more sense.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I have one of these. It had two 3.5mm sockets so I could go from headphones to in-car cassette adapter, to headphones to desktop speaker,

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

without missing a beat.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Still got this model and it works great! Sometimes plug it into my home stereo and listen to my old music. Excellent little player!

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Indeed :)

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Same, my kids love some of the old techno I had on there.

Good bot.

If you are looking for good wireless headphones the XM5 are killer but pricey. I found the XB900n to be just as good for half the

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

2) price. 25-30hrs battery life and recharges quick. The XB dont connect to 2 sources thought

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'll keep those in mind as an option, thanks :)

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Still very popular in Japan

3 years ago | Likes 95 Dislikes 0

Yeah, both Techmoan and This Does Not Compute have done a few videos on their history and it's good to see there's still an audience there.

3 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 0

I had two minidisc players. Absolutely loved the fact you could record.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I had the portable and a stereo system deck. I loved it.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Pretty sure these are expensive af now.

3 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Depends on the brand, mainly sony ones go for higher prices

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Just checked... $600 on ebay.

3 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

But do they actually sell?

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hot damn, maybe I should try to fix mine then.

3 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I'm in Japan and have one. It has THE worst software EVER. Great hardware, but the software sucks dick.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Someone mentioned software by Stefano Brilli which might work (I haven't tried it yet): /gallery/C83zB4e/comment/2310048993

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I take it it’s still first party only software? Surprised there hasn’t been a workaround yet.

Very nice, thanks.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

@OP you missed one very important thing on the post… what was on it?

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Disc in it had a 'vintage' rap mix including Dr. Dre, Snoop, Scarface, Eminem, Ice Cube etc. Only other one I checked has Zero 7, Air... 1/x

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Boards of Canada, Röyksopp, and Björk. Got more than 10 full discs in total, with a few blanks (including one in the original wrapper). 2/2

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nice! I’m sorry you had to use “vintage”… I’d like to think my music tastes aren’t that dated, but often shown to be incorrect in the matter

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hehe :)

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Aw man, I remember having one in the early 2000s. Was so rad. Remember trying to record Tools Demon Cleaner cover via optical

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Probably the coolest thing about this post has been people like yourself sharing their memories with these players.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Was fun figuring out how to do it and the minidisks looked so cool back then. I had coloured see thru ones. Makes me feel old but think 1/

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

2/ I might need to get another just for the nostalgia.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, I've got a bunch of multicoloured TDK discs (red, orange, green, blue, and black) plus purple Sharp ones. Good luck finding a player.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I bet they're pretty rare now, don't even know what happened to my old Sony

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What did you listen to?

Awesome. And vintage? Lol. I still have my walkman sport w/ auto reverse.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hehe. Nice. I did also find my old cassette player in the search (a Panasonic RQ-X11 in blue). Went straight from that to the MD player.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I want from records & tapes to cds to mp3, back to records and streaming.
