31 Days of Horror films. 19/31

Oct 20, 2024 5:19 PM

Continuing my Spooky Season horror film watch for every day of October. I'm going to try to see things I've missed over the years but will probably see a few classics and personal favorites along the way.

Ginger Snaps (2000) available on Peacock, XumoPlay, most streaming rental, and physical media.

Ginger Snaps (2000) basic plot description: Two outcast sisters obsessed with death deal with the changes that occur after one of them is attacked by a creature in the woods.

A coming of age film and a werewolf story rolled into one with fine acting from the two leads, it has a good mix of angst, horror, and bits of humor to keep the film engaging. The makeup and creature effects are well done and genuinely creepy and the film has sense of style and strong aesthetic that compliment the story being presented to the viewer.

For my meaningless rating, I give it a tupperware full of severed fingers.

My cousin worked on all three of them. When they filmed the third one at Fort Edmonton I got to attend a talk with some of the folks from KNB EFX Group (that did the werewolf effects) and hear them talk about special effects and working with Quentin Tarantino on his movies.

I had a crush on them, knew the movie name rang a bell. Haha

Truly love that movie, thank you for sharing <3

I traveled an hour and a half to see this in theatres when it first came out since it was only playing in a single theatre in the nearest major city. Thankfully it did just well enough that the sequels were played in the indie theatre near my house.

Wait. This isn’t a porn? I totally thought this was a knockoff twilight porn

Wait… is that Becky?

Becky Rosen. Supernatural super fan. I didn’t know she was in Ginger Snaps.

Ginger Snaps under the strain of having to live in modern society

Fun fact, she's actually 5 years younger than Emily Perkins who played the younger sister in the film.

There was this one Werewolf movie I watched that offered a different take. It was about this girl in a travelling freakshow who was billed as the "Wolfgirl" because she was covered in thick hair all over her body, but was still a normal person. By the end she looked like a normal person, but was completely feral.

Good movie!

Really enjoyed the first one. The sequels also exist.

1 year ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

How dare! The third one is my favorite.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I did like the second one a lot too. The third is basicly the first one but in the ye olden days.

Yeh I loved the character of Ghost and the girl that played her and holy shit I just looked it up and it's Tatiana Mislani.

Katharine Isabelle revealed a few years ago that this promo image for the movie is 95% not even her, lol

Underrated comment

IMO, one of the best of the werewolf genre

Dog Soldiers is N°1 forever i think, everyrhing else is up to user preference in variation.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'll have to give it a watch. Don't catch very many werewolf movies, not sure if underworld counts. Bad Moon came out late 90s is a pretty good story.

Up there with Dog Soldiers

1 year ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Dog Soldiers is so good. The story is nice and simple, the overall vibe is tense as hell, and it has some of the best creature effects ever.

What did you think of the prequel, Ginger Snaps Back: To the Begining?

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It was meh

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I know I saw it, but I don't remember it. Maybe it didn't leave an impression, maybe I'm just getting old.

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Why I have the same thought. I have seen it but have no memory of it

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

How about your thoughts, is it worth a rewatch?

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I think so. Got a nice creepy pace to it and some legit sad moments I wasn't expecting. Set in 1815s Canada fur trading fort, so the set and costumes are nice. The cinematography is good, even if it is weird that none of the scenes seem to take place in daylight. Good acting from the girls and the rest of the cast (including the child actor). Most importaintly I feel like it earns its tone and conclusion.

Decent movie. I think that the third one is the best of the trilogy, but the second has a surprise actor in it.

1 year ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

The third is really good. Such immaculate visual style and mood.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

TIL there are not one, but two sequels.

1 year ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

The third one is prequel about the girl's ancestors, still played by the same actresses.

Rick Astley?

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

No, he let us down.

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

He never gave up on us, like you so clearly gave up on him.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Shut your dirty mouth! He would never do that.

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Well, if you find him in the second movie, I'll gladly eat my words.
