Drug detection dog "Momotaro" makes a big impact: discovers 80 million yen worth of marijuana hidden in a suitcase; Spanish man (37) arrested

A drug detection dog found 80 million yen worth of marijuana hidden in a suitcase.

The incident was discovered when drug detection dog Momotaro reacted to the marijuana in the suitcase.

Spanish suspect Quesada Lao Carlos (37) is suspected of attempting to smuggle about 16 kg of marijuana, worth 80 million yen at street value, in his suitcase when he entered Narita Airport, Japan from Thailand on September 20.

Quesada Lao admitted to the charges, saying, "I was planning to use it myself or sell it to someone."

"The Cannabis Control Law is Japan's national law banning the import, export, cultivation, sale, purchase, and research of cannabis buds and leaves. Originally passed in July 1948, the law has subsequently been modified multiple times, with each revision adding stricter penalties for violations."

That math makes no sense. 16kg is 35.274 lbs. A lb is 16 ounces so that is 564.384 ounces. 80 million yen is ~ 536,359 us dollars. That means they think an ounce is worth 950.34$ which is an order of magnitude off compared to where I live. That would be about 56,500$ bought at RETAIL prices where I live. Wholesale is less.

It is illegal stuff in Japan.

Sure I get that but those numbers are stupid. Nobody is paying 1000$ for an ounce.

This is what the news lady said "末端価格8000万円" which translates to "Retail price: 80 million yen". I agree with tou, but that's what they said. https://youtu.be/mJF_qEXJ9OM?si=pCThkkzOok-miIU2
