It's one thing to train a cat to do something (harder than a dog). But this? This is real thinking and problem solving. Seriously smart cat! The owners need to get some guidance... as this cat might be trainable for some pretty amazing stuff beyond this clever door lock defeat.
Man that cat's way too good at that. I knew one that knew how doorknobs worked, but his lack of thumbs prevented success, and I felt smug watching. But this one probably woulda figured it out
I had one that understood doorknobs but couldnt work them, she did however figure out the call bell my brother used back when after he had surgery if she got locked in the room or my brother was asleep and she liked to sleep in his room and he preferred to sleep with the door shut but ye she realized someone would come see what my brother needed so from then on door shut? want food? general distress? ding ding ding
I had a Russian blue that could open rounded doorknobs, and if the door was locked, he realized he could just shake the crap out of the door and the crappy lock would fail and he could get in after that.
My orange stretches up to the round knob and does the actions of turning it but the fur between his pads is just too slippery. He'll do it for 5 minutes then get mad and yell at the door for another 5.

Whether you rate cats or dogs as "more intelligent" depends on whether you think independence or obedience is a sign of intelligence. The truth is that both species have a wide range of intelligence levels. (And also one of my cats is in the running for World's Dumbest Cat. I love him but he is an idiot.)
I had a border collie mix that pulled kitchen drawers out to use as steps to get on the counter, and then pushed them back in when he was done eating whatever he wanted on the counter topx
