(generic comment questioning your work schedule even though I’ve never driven anything bigger than a band van)

Digging the mellow set up. Got the same van

Whoo Deeeyyy from cincy.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I once drove from where I live (80 miles north of Jacksonville, FL) to San Antonio. Alone for 18 hours straight. Twice.

East bound and down

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Welcome to Fort Worth! Try and check out the stock show and rodeo!

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Don't worry, something will turn up.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Does it get cold?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes! I dread getting out of the sleeping bag because it gets so cold it's almost painful. In Iowa my Windex froze overnight.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I've driven ~900m for school before. 15+ hours. Only breaks for food and stretching. No sleeping. Was a fucking nightmare.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Your body adjusts the more you do it.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ok but who took a massive shit on the floor?

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Nobody! I sweep and spray down the floor very often. Those are scratches which are caused by pallets when they get pushed/dragged.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

staying one step ahead of the law, I got ya

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

That sounds like a DOT violation.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've made that drive too many times. Everything south of Memphis is awful.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You should puy a carpet down man, it'll make it more cozy

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

But the nasty pallets will ruin it. I gotta sweep and spray down the floor after every job.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Used to do NC to Miami in 9 1/2. Not worth it anymore.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's a long stretch!! I think my longest was Pikes Peak to Great Falls but that was in a sports car with supportive, comfortable seats.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Wait you can't actually sleep while the cars moving?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Is that a van or a truck?

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Van

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Fascinating book/audiobook for your long drives. Interesting that overtired driving kills more than drink.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Owner operator?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sort of. Independent contractor but I'm leasing the van. Lease to own program.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What do you do while driving? Listen to music? Podcast? Audiobooks?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Music and podcasts. Listen to the Bible, too . And lots of Vaping.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I drive a bit for work. Podcast keep me busy, which ones do you like?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've been listening to Tim Pool. Maybe check him out. He's a centrist politically. He always has interesting guests.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I’m well aware who he is, not my cup of tea at all. If I’m in the mood for political, Sam Harris does the trick for me.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I listened to one episode of his. I listen to all sides. Like, NPR podcasts, and the Daily.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Must have high speed limits for truckers. You averaged 66mph. So if you stopped to pee at all you musta been doin mostly 75 to 80mph

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

At what point in any part of this picture did it give you an impression that's a /truck/?

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I know semi trucks have sleeper cabins though I have never seen one.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

75. Only stopped for gas a few times, and in the morning, to eat quickly. I'm not a trucker anymore. I drive a cargo van

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

No, a car go "wroom".

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Car go 'beep'

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

992 miles ≈ 1596 kilometres

It's already in freedom units. Are you trying to confuse us with socialist conversions?

Damn

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I drove 1000 miles and I'm still in Texas what the fuck States ridiculous in-scope

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's impressive average speed, going above 100km/h in a van for 15h... many speed limits were broken.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

70 mph or 112 km/h is a pretty common speed limit for interstate freeways. Seems like a reasonable average if avoiding massive cities.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

But how many washing machines is that?

4 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

its 1437 wm per mile

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Average washer is 27" so 2 327 893.33

4 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

27”? What’s that in bananas?

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

3.853 bananas

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That helps. Thank you. ;)

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

mylar sheeting is cheap and very reflective of heat. you could tape it up and retain far more heat overnight.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

True. But I want to know what's going on around me. Especially when I need to sleep in deserted parking lots.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

10-4. You don’t have to fully enclose to realize the benefit. Literally just around you. you could make it with cardboard.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

if you get a inverter with a battery you can run a small heater. By decreasing your surface exposure you slow the loss of heat.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So a small battery and heater set up becomes efficient in more extreme temps.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What is your plan in summer temps?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Welcome to fort worth. Get out while you can.

4 years ago | Likes 75 Dislikes 3

I love it here. What don't you like?

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

there are extremely different areas of fort worth living there you should be aware of this.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

That's true in any city.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

Fort worth is amazing. Southwest Fort was my time there

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

35W was kinda crazy today. Lots of construction.

4 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 2

That entire road is a shit show all the way down past San Antonio.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

35W at FW is always lousy unless you can get in the express lane.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It’s always under construction

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

That’s not just “today”. Texas roads suck every day!

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

We've been considering moving there, what makes it so bad in your opinion? Coming from an area where the nearest store (other than

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Convenience store and a dollar store) is 45 miles away, along with the hospital and doctors and pharmacy, vet, or fast food.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Honestly, the city and the state are beautiful as hell. And the weather isn't too hard to get used to. It's just, the South. And obviously.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm in south Texas so I'm already used to the weather (and other... Issues of the south). Appreciate the reply!

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ft worth is a great place, I grew up there, and family is still there.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Just don't live IN fort worth and it is fine, look to North Richland hills or Hurst

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I live in Hurst. I’m happy with it

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Some parts are ok. Northside you gotta be careful and never go to Lancaster st at night. Sometimes I miss home. In MD now

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'll try to keep this in mind, I'm not used to "big cities" where I gotta be careful about the bad parts, so that'll be an adjustment

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thanks I appreciate it!

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Must be nice, being able to nap while you drive.

4 years ago | Likes 503 Dislikes 0

That's what cruise control is for!

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's one of then self driving Tesla trucks I guess.

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

I'm never far from my bed! Some nights I get 2 hrs of sleep, then back to driving.

4 years ago | Likes 56 Dislikes 3

Ahhh now I'm scared to go out and drive tonight

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Well that’s dumb, sleep deprivation is detrimental to your ability to drive, comprable to being drunk depending on amount

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Is driving part of your job? If so I feel like there has to be laws against that.

4 years ago | Likes 34 Dislikes 0

That depends on country. In some there are in others it's a free for all.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Please be careful. My friend died this way. Trucker job, got sleep deprived and crashed into the woods. Left behind a family.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No disrespect intended because I'm sure you know better than I, but if you're a truck driver, don't these laws apply? 1/2

4 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

What is it that you do to be driving so much. Also is it even legal to commercially drive for 15 h ( assuming you had no break)

4 years ago | Likes 159 Dislikes 1

No.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 6

He's not in a big truck, so he gets an exception. So do farm and lumber haulers. It's a fucking dumb system.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Given that looks like a panel van & if independent contractor, he can be classed as not commercial

4 years ago | Likes 44 Dislikes 0

Any transfer of third party possessions for hire is commercial driving. If you cross state lines or not, you ought to have a DOT#.

4 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

But no class B or class A CDL required for small veh

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Register with DOT and incorporate in your domicile state, no matter what driver class you are.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Genuinely curious, why?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes. Independent contractor, and I drive a Ford Transit high roofed van.

4 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

I do expedited shipping in a cargo van. Vehicles under 10000 lbs aren't regulated by DOT. No hours of service, log books, medical card, etc.

4 years ago | Likes 245 Dislikes 3

Ah, so that's how they'll get teens driving freight.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Loophole

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That really sucks that you are not given mandatory rest time and are encouraged to overwork. I'm glad you're safe

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

How did you manage to sustain an constant speed of 66mph? Didn't you pass through any towns or anything?

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The entire route was on the interstates. Interstate highways don't have any traffic lights, stop signs.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I hope the pay is through the roof.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well, depends on many factors. Some jobs pay a buck a mile. Some pay 60-70 cents. After expenses (gas), I got $450 for this last trip.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

How lucrative is that? Kinda crazy

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Depends how busy you are. $2000 a wk after expenses is reasonable.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Interesting, is the money any good, I often drive from Bellingham to LA strait, just for personal vacation though.

4 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Check out uship. My SO uses that when doing long drives.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hello fellow 'hamster!

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, decent money IMO. Slow to avg wk, $1000. Busy week, $1500-$2000.

4 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Do you own you own van?

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Sort of. Lease-to-own thru the company. $125 a wk deducted.

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I drove from Olympia to Atascadero, CA to pick up a transmission and turned around and drove all the way back.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What do you get paid for something like this?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There is no set pay. Depends on factors. For example, if no other vans are in the area, they can charge more. I get a percentage of total

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That should be fixed. Hours of service should be a rule for all commercial drivers.

4 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 2

Truck drivers hate the 12 hour rule bc they make their nut on OT

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

It's 11 hours driving, and OT doesn't exist in any form in the vast majority of this industry.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

All drivers period. Can't count the number of time sleepy people in cars almost took me out with them.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

How would one go about finding such a job?

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

There are apps. Try uship maybe. My SO transports things using that. Once we transported a puppy and a motorcycle.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Some companies require CDL experience. Mine does. I used to drive a big truck. Not all of them require experience tho.

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I have a class B CDL from my firefighting days.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Don’t you worry about the safety to yourself and others when driving without much sleep?

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

No, because I would stop if I was sleepy. Also, not all trips require me to drive all night. This one did tho.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Driving is really easy if you're good at it. If I don't have to deal with morons I don't find it mentally or physically draining and can >

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

do my 11hr day (my legal maximum as an OTR Semi driver) and not be tired. Other days, with multiple stops and problems ... I've had 10 hr >

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

days where I only drove for 4. Fuck Chicago.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

*ok, "if you're good at it" isn't fair, skill is only a small factor, some people are just suited to long drives and others aren't.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Last time I did a long drive, was SWVA to Columbia, MO. 18 hrs, straight. My condolences, bc anything over 8 is nauseating.

4 years ago | Likes 117 Dislikes 2

I drove from Cincinnati to Fargo in one shot. It was ok. Early fall, great drive. The worst part was getting through Chicago

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

For me, the 10 hr mark is where the drive stops being enjoyable. 12 is when the butt goes uncomfortably numb. 17 is the most I’ve done.

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I've driven from the Gulf Coast to Upstate NY straight through before. Just over 22 hours. Felt like I was high off my tits when I arrived.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I did massachusetts to Titusville Florida. No stops. It was awful.

4 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Orlando to Wilmington Delaware in 14.5 hours in a Jeep. My back hurt so bad I traded the car the next week.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

which was the worst part, Knowing you were going to Titusville, or actually arriving HAHAHA

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

But did you get to see the launch?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

where in swva?

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Just west of VTech.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Literally just pulled in to BBurg last night! Gonna be here for a few days, cool beans man

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I drove 1600km after work and 1600km back every other weekend to see a girl for > 1 year. We've been married since '08. Worth it lol.

4 years ago | Likes 34 Dislikes 0

The fact that this is almost 500 miles plus 500 miles is amazing.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Uh... 994 miles each way.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My bf is driving 500km here, & then 500km back, to visit for 4 days. We're going to try that once a month, see how things work out.

4 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

Good luck. It was rough but we made it.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

At least he isn't walking 1000 miles just to fall at your door

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

No fucking way a plane ticket is more expensive from all that gas and toll and that ignoring time needed with car and the maintenance of it

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

And the travel time is probably less with a plane.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It was a lease lol. Lotta extra miles to turn that car in. And the plane ticket was about the same for a flight there Friday and home sunday

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0
