Part 1: Carriers, carriers everywhere.

part 3 is here : http://imgur.com/gallery/PrbH8lL/new

I worked for Verizon Wireless for a while (over a year). In that time I learned basically all the ins and outs of the great, big, messy system that is Cellular Networking in the USA. Since enough people seem interested in what those are, I am here to give them to you. Welcome to the series “How to only get what you need instead of what they want you to want.” I am starting with the biggest part of the entire Cellular shindig; the carriers themselves.

Let’s talk about the “Big Four”
This would be Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile. It should be noted that, really, there’s only a “Big 2” as Sprint mostly rents Verizon’s network and T-Mobile mostly rents AT&T’s network. They are, more or less, the RC Cola and Mr. Pibb to VZW+ATT’s Coca-Cola and Pepsi. I’ll still go over them, though, as well as where the REALLY small carriers come into play (more local city-or-county based networks). In order to keep it from being terribly ramble-like, I’ve come up with a few categories that allow me to sum up the major points of interest related to these carriers:

How’s the coverage?

How’s the price?

How’s the support?

Will they lie to you and how much?

How controlling are they?

If you know these 5 things, you probably know enough to make a basic choice as far as what direction you want to go in. That will also depend on your own individual needs, but I’ll go over all of that as well.

Verizon:

The one I worked for and, yes, the one that I use. It’s true that Verizon is also more or less the most expensive carrier available, though there are some defendable reasons for that. My family switched from AT&T to Verizon several years ago when I first started off to College, as Verizon was literally the only carrier to get service on my campus at all – everyone else, AT&T included, fell off about 15 minutes up the road. Verizon, on the other hand, had about 4 bars mostly everywhere on campus, and even kept call-capable reception quite far out into the trails that ran behind the main campus (woods). As far as plans go, the cheapest you’re looking at with Verizon is:

$25 – Basic Phone w/700 minutes + Unlimited Texting
$40 – Basic Phone w/Unlimited Call+Text
$60 – Smartphone with 1GB of data

That’s where you start – it goes up from there. The average family 4-pack bill that I came across was in the$200-$250 range, depending on things like Data Limit and Employer Discount. Some were higher, some were lower, and by-and-by this seems like a pretty standard price across the industry – these companies only have to be competitive compared to each other, and there are really only 2 options most people go to, so Verizon and AT&T will usually follow each other’s lead. It’s worth noting that Verizon does not consider Sprint to be a real competitor, despite being the other CDMA Network in the US. I’ll get into that later.

How’s the coverage?

Honestly the coverage is excellent just about everywhere in the USA. While the ‘maps’ each company, including Verizon, likes to wave about are total horsecrap, Verizon really does have the best coverage in the United States. This is, of course, broadly speaking as there are spots on every carrier that just inexplicably don’t have access when it seems they should – there is a street not far from where I live that is right smack in the middle of a coverage area, in the center of a well-populated area, that has absolutely no signal for Verizon but has flawless reception on AT&T. Broadly speaking, Verizon has the best data and call reception coverage, and this claim is indeed backed up by a number of third-party analytics awards every year, but broadly speaking doesn’t mean dick if your house happens to be a deadzone with a specific carrier.

How’s the price?

It’s definitely the upper end. Verizon doesn’t do Unlimited Data anymore, and depending on how much you need it can get expensive very fast. Lower data plans (really anything under 10GB/Mo) are still quite affordable for family plans, but once you start adding more lines than those 10 can reasonably support, be prepared to dig a bit deeper into your wallet.

How’s the support?

You get horror stories from any company’s support. It’s usually all you hear, because nobody bothers reporting good experiences. Verizon is no exception, but I will say this: Go to your local store FIRST. Please, for the love of God, if you are having a problem with your service or equipment, save yourself a world of time and misunderstanding and call the store you purchased your stuff from – the employees there have more knowledge of your account and savvy-ness level, as well as have more time, than the people at Customer Care do. If they need to, THEY can call into Care WITH you in the store. I promise, 100%, that this will get you answers and solutions much faster than simply calling into Care on your own… especially considering they can probably fix the issue without contacting Care at all.

Will they lie to you and how much?

Corporately, they are at worst very misleading to the same degree other carriers are. Again, this more or less goes to matching their primary competitor – AT&T – and the marketing practices of both are rather deceptive without being outright lies. If you ask flat out what your bill will be, they will of course tell you, but take their adverts with a grain of salt (or two). The most prominent one I can think of is “4 lines and 10GB of data for $140 a month with Verizon EDGE” That is to get you in the store. You will never, under any circumstances, be paying JUST $140 + Tax for those 4 lines. It is not possible. AT&T has a very similar advertisement with their NEXT program, and it follows the same rules. I will delve deeper into this conundrum in the post about Plans and Deals, but for now take the big picture point home: Carriers want to get you in the store. Sometimes they use Legalese wording to make that happen.

How controlling are they?

This depends on which service you go with. Presently Verizon offers several different plan options, which I will rate from LEAST CONTROLLING to MOST CONTROLLING, ie; they have less or more control over your account and what you can do with it.

-Pre Paid
-EDGE
-Contract

Prepaid is, obviously, very much in your hands. You don’t want service anymore? Stop adding service to your account. Easy peasy. Done.

The EDGE plan is a very complicated one, but to put it in a nutshell it allows you to choose when you want to get a new phone – you may just have to pay a variable amount in order to get it done. Definitely the plan to go with if you always want the newest thing or have a high-data plan.

Contract refers to the old standard 24 month contract. You pay X for your phone up front, you have service for 2 years or pay a hefty cancellation fee, the only exception is dying. If you use your phone a lot and don’t mind waiting for the latest and greatest, there’s really nothing /wrong/ with the contract plans. This is the standard you’ve had for years.

As far as device compatibility goes though, they are top notch in this category. Verizon 4G Smartphones (Literally everything that has been released since the original iPhone 5 / Samsung Galaxy S3) come unlocked by default and can be taken to any carrier, US or otherwise, with little to no hassle.
We got foreign customers in all the time looking to outright purchase phones to take home with them after their visit because Verizon phones would work on their network. This CAN NOT be said the other way around; sprint phones work on sprint. AT&T phones work with AT&T and sometimes T-Mobile. While you CAN unlock these phones, it is usually a tremendous hassle to do so.

AT&T is one of the ‘Big 2’ providers in the USA, the networking parent company of T-Mobile, and the largest GSM network in the US, with its counterpart Verizon having the largest CDMA network available. It is worth noting that GSM is the network type used by damn near everyone OUTSIDE of the USA, but that CDMA phones generally have compatibility with GSM-based networks programed in. AT&T has fantastic coverage in most places you’re likely to actually go. Yes, Verizon had coverage in my quite middle-of-nowhere college campus and a good mile or two into the woods beyond that, but are you planning on going three miles into nowhere often?

That being said, their prices are EXTREMELY SIMILAR to Verizon’s, and really only get better than verizon’s on larger accounts (5-6+ Phones, 15+GB of data/mo) and are actually MORE expensive on single line plans or very small, 2-3 person accounts in most instances. As with Verizon, AT&T doesn’t offer unlimited data anymore, so your price will be dictated almost entirely off of how much data you need.

Also, as far as contracts go, AT&T has switched entirely over to its NEXT program, in which you pay the phone off in monthly installments instead of paying X up front and being signed in for 2 years. This can be a good thing, this can be a bad thing, it just depends.

How’s the coverage?

Good. It has its hiccups just like Verizon does, and doesn’t extend as far into the boonies as Verizon does, but if you are mostly in well-populated areas or major highways, you really shouldn’t notice a difference. Again, always consider checking if the places you are the MOST (home, work) are in good areas for a specific carrier.

How’s the price?

Oddly, a little high as far as low-level accounts go. You can get a better single-line plan with Verizon. Their larger bundle accounts are very well priced though.

How’s the support?

The exact same rule that I stated for Verizon goes here as well: Go to your store first. I beg you. I can not stress this enough. I have family that has AT&T, I have family that has Verizon, the rule is good across the board ; your store rep will GENERALLY be a better help than someone over the phone at Care, and at the very least your store rep can get answers from Care faster than you can. It’s also worth noting this is for AT&T CELLULAR. U-Verse is its own company that has nothing to do with ATT Cell other than having the same parent name, and in my honest opinion and experience U-Verse is a terrible service with terrible support that is at a terrible price.

Will they lie to you and how much?

To the same degree that advertisers tend to lie to you. See above with Verizon’s section. The primary difference is that now and then AT&T fall victim to the term “promotional pricing” that expires after a certain amount of time, but thankfully this is now almost entirely limited to their Home Services branch, not their cell branch.

How controlling are they?

Quite a bit, surprisingly. This is one area they stand out from Verizon. You basically have to go with the NEXT program now, and their devices do not come unlocked for other US carriers. Make no mistake that the unlock policy is to make it more difficult for you to leave.

Overall, AT&T is by no means a bad cell provider. For larger family plans or those who burn through data it may very well be the economic way to go.

I will warn you now; I do not have good things to say about sprint. SOME people have them and have no problems with them, but in my experience those people are rare. It being the other primary CDMA network in the USA, we learned a lot about them at Verizon since we often had to sell against them and their amazing advertisements. That said I’ll just get right into the primary points.

How’s the coverage?

It’s acceptable in major population centers, and everywhere else it’s shit. You can’t drive from Columbus to Cleveland, using a major highway, without losing service for an extended period of time in the middle. This is a two-hour drive if you’re taking it easy, on one of the largest and most-used highways in the state, between two major population centers. This is extremely common on Sprint. If you are in the proper centers of large cities, Sprint likely has good coverage. If you go out a bit further, in many cases even to the suburbs, the signal starts dropping quickly.

How’s the price?

Not as good as you would expect, especially with the advertisements they run that would have you believe their prices are at most half of what Verizon and AT&T will run you, which is simply not true. On average, Sprint’s service will run you about $20 a month less than what it will on one of the two larger carriers.

How’s the support?

That $20 a month came from somewhere, and this is it. If there was only one reason I could tell you not to pick sprint, it’s this one. I cannot stress to you enough that Sprint’s support is the WORST in the business. Seriously. Go to Bestbuy if you have problems with your sprint service; you are more likely to get help there from a rep that deals with all 4 carriers than by actually calling sprint.

Will they lie to you and how much?

Yes. While it is true that they fall into the same misleading advertising that both Verizon and AT&T do, they are guilty of it to a much more extreme degree. If you live in the US, I’m sure you’ve seen their aggressive marketing campaign saying they will cut your Verizon or AT&T bill in half. What they fail to mention until you are signing the paperwork is that they will only cut your DATA plan in half, you have to turn in your present phones for $0 credit, and you have to purchase new phones from them at full retail value; steep prices that may not actually save you much, if any, money per month when all is said and done. They are also very wily about giving you your own account information, including explaining your bill or giving you your account number.

How controlling are they?

Remember that story about the guy who sat on hold with Comcast for 3 hours trying to get his account number? Hello and welcome to Sprint. They may not be any more controlling than Verizon on paper, but in practice they make it very very difficult to access most of the information relating to YOUR account. The longest part of a port-in process for us at Verizon, with a Sprint customer, was getting the info we needed from Sprint’s customer care team.

They do not have a very good product, and they know it. Maybe it’s a vicious cycle where they can’t improve that product until more people get it, but either way; once you’re in Sprint’s network, they will cling to you for all they are worth and make leaving as difficult as possible for you.
Generally speaking I cannot think of many people who would benefit from Sprint’s level of coverage and prices that would not be BETTER OFF going with an independent carrier like Boost or Page Plus. At least Page Plus isn’t a hassle to leave if you decide to change providers.

T-Mobile:
I’ll be honest; I only ever met two people with T-Mobile in my time at Verizon and we didn’t really study their practices or advertisements all that much.

That being said, I am editing this section due to a number of PMs and Comments. as @gladerunlegend points out in the comments, "Maybe he doesn't know much about them because people don't switch from T-Mobile to Verizon... I think that speaks volumes for T-Mobile." This is entirely possible, especially after a small bit of research into T-Mobile's recent policies and plan rates. They appear to be a rapidly rising competitor in the Cellular field, and it seems you could do a lot worse than checking them out if you're looking for an alternative provider to Verizon or AT&T.

This is the shoutout to smaller-er carriers like Boost, Page, Consumer Cellular, and whatever your local Flavor of the City happens to be. There is not a ton to say about these guys because they are so small, but I will say what I can about them which is primarily who they are good for. If you:
- Live in a large city
- Do not travel often
- Live and Work in an area they have good service
- Do not travel far (different from often)
- Do not need the latest and greatest tech
Congratulations, these carriers are, honestly, probably the best fit for you. Seriously; they often have extremely limited service areas and device selection unless you bring your own from another carrier (like Verizon, since those work on everything), but if you live in a place they work well and do not tend to leave that area, they are insanely cheap and will give you what you need where you need it. Just don’t expect great things when you take a vacation, but hell! If you’re on vacation, maybe leave the phone behind anyway, ya know?

@greekbearinggifts made a handy little mini-guide/informative about one option under this category, Republic Wireless. You can see it and its affordability/options here: http://imgur.com/gallery/ShG34/comment/462056814/1?lr=0

What should I go over next?

I've had T-Mobile for 10 years, they're an amazing company and I don't spend like $200/month like I used to with Sprint

10 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

I read that AT&T attempted to acquire T-Mobile. How could you completely leave out the news of their Uncarrier program? This is old news.

10 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 1

I'm sorry but this post it very useless, you don't provide much info

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

And much if it is incorrect. ATT plans are old, T-Mobile is NOT owned by ATT, and most of the Sprint info is false.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This was clearly written as a Verizon ad. Note: No things bad about Verizon except price. Talked the most crap about Sprint 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

2/2 (they lose most customers to). Sprint also has their own CDMA network, they roam with eachother. also bashed AT&T's version of edge.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Completely ignored T-Mobile, which seems to be the going tactic with the other carriers in their ads.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Mr. Pibb is Coke's answer to Dr. Pepper. How can we trust your information if you don't even know something as fundamental as this??

10 years ago | Likes 56 Dislikes 4

plus who likes Pepsi? I almost don't trust people that like Pepsi...

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

T-Mobile hasn't been acquired by AT&T; T-Mobile <> Sprint in any world. Do a bit of research and you'll learn that not only is Verizon (1/2)

10 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

changing their plans as a direct result of T-Mobile's disruptions, they're unable to offer unlimited data plans to compete. You weren't (2/3

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

seeing T-Mobile customers in your store because they're happy and have no need. Disclosure: I was Verizon for 10 yrs and switched to TM.

10 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

As someone who has had a $35/month unlimited everything Sprint SERO plan for 11 years, I'll take a dropped call in the sticks now and then.

10 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Speaking as a fellow SERO plan member I have never had issues here in Topeka and Lawrence Kansas. I'll never be able to beat the deal I have

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Or at school the only providers that get coverage are Sprint and verizon. Sprints service had drastically improves since Softbank

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm already going to tell everyone you're full of shit. Some of your info is correct, but the fact that you claim to be knowledgeable about

10 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Most of it outside of Verz is wrong. Wrong parent company for T-Mobile, old ATT info, blatantly inflammatory Sprint info.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Carriers and failed to note that at&t had to pay 60mil+ to tmobile after a buyout plan that fell through means you don't really know much.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Most carriers are trying to not move towards tmobile's model, but they're bleeding customers

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

As a T-Mobile employee I find you incorrect statements about AT&T being our "network parent" and that we don't compete as an insult sir.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Well my three years with Sprint has been wonderful, your slant on them sounds prejudice. And I travel cross country frequently.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

And their info about T-Mobile is wrong. Lots of false info.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm a semi driver and travel all over and I have sprint . The only time I lose a call or data is when I'm up in the hills

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

You should consider Republic wireless. They use Sprint's network, but at way cheaper prices.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I have sprint myself and only did so because "the big 2" don't offer unlimited data.

10 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

$50/mo for unltd talk, text, and 4G data from T-Mobile. It's awesome.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You worked for Verizon for a year and you know everything about all wireless carriers? You're full of shit. I've worked for them for 5+ 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

As an avid Sprint user/supporter who has had nothing but bad service from both Verizon AND AT&T I am going to go ahead and disagree with you

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I have had sprint for years and have never had a problem with it. Customer Service has always been prompt and helpful. Unlimited Data ftw

10 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

I've used 95Gb of data tethering and Sprint just doesn't care! Thank god! Sprint I love you!

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Same here

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Yep.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I switched from t mobile to sprint because i wanted to keep unlimited data but was tired of t mobile

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

AT&T didn't acquire T-Mobile . Also unlimited 4G LTE FTW! FK Verizon all the way.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

As someone who has Verizon and hates them, Fuck Verizon. They are the Comcast of the mobile phone market.

10 years ago | Likes 42 Dislikes 1

This was more informative than the post.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

We had to switch from V to Sprint because we moved to a place where there wasn't any coverage...they still charged us $400.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Boom

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Probably why Comcast offers discounts when you bundle with Verizon Wireless. Terrible corporations have to stick together.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

They were also two of the biggest lobbyist against Net Neutrality.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah.. Pig fuckers.. Like I said.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

T-Mobile is where it's at, I'm disappointed @OP had little to say about them.

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

T-mobile employee & customer, feel free to ask me about our stuff, I'll add to this if people want!

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Love T-Mobile! I was sad OP didn't talk about it at all. Definitely my favorite carrier.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's because op has a blatant bias. Lots of incorrect info.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Verizon associate tried to tell me the frequency from lightbulbs was affecting my wifi signal..

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

That sounds like sprint telling me there was a tower on my light post in my street out front when I had zero service

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

A Clearwire said our internet was being slow because the towers are "resting" because sometimes they get tired and need a nap. Seriously.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

T-Mobile user. I pay $45 a month for unlimited talk, text, and 30mbps data (twin cities). I bought my Nexus 5 out of pocket with no subsidy

10 years ago | Likes 55 Dislikes 2

Metro PCS user (owned by T-Mobile), $30/m unlimited talk and text, and unlimited data but only the first 1gb of data is 4G speed.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

T-Mobile pay as you go plan. $30/mo for unlimited text and data (but only 100 minutes, which works for me). Currently on a nexus 5 I bought.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I should also mention you can set up your pat as you go plans to auto pay through T-Mobile. I don't have to pay any attention to my bill.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Tmobile also offers gov and military discount

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I also live in the Twin Cities and have never had issues with the mobile service.:-

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I will say I get the "corporate discount" through my company but it's like 18% off T-Mobile's price is like half of verizon & better service

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

well, at least better service in minnesota, i get 4g everywhere basically. but if i go out of state on trips, coverage drops a lot

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

T-Mobile is the only carrier making waves now. Excluding them is very misleading

10 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 1

And most of their info about Sprint is wrong and ATT is not the parent company of T-Mobile. How in the world did this get to fp?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You and everyone else is saying this but what the fuck does that mean? WHAT ARE they doing that's so amazing????

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

no contract, better coverage, better customer service, free coverage for mexico and canada, etc

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Check out the uncarrier moves. Unlimited music streaming ftw.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

They still have unltd data plans & their customer service rocks. I pay $50/mo for unltd talk, text, 4G data. 9/10 would recommend

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

So current Verizon and ex AT&T employee here. Some things are out dated in ops post. Verizon no longer offers the $60 1 GB option for a

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Single customer and also no longer offers 2 year contracts as well. The Device Payment Program (formally edge) is a good option for anyone

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Okay, 2 things. Though you are a current Verizon employee, are you sure they got rid of the 2 yr contracts? Also, I heard that the edge plan

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Depends on the market, seeing as I signed a customer up for a two year contract earlier today.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

is the bad deal because it cost actually A LITTLE more?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If it does cost you a little more it's in lieu of buying the phone up front, since all you pay is sales tax. Also 3rd party stores will

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I.e. the iphone 6 normally would have costed $200 but on the device payment you pay $2/month (in most cases) for 2 years which equals $48

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Still carry 2 year contracts but corporate owned locations (like the one I work in) are no longer offering 2 year contracts.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Spoken like a VZW shill if I've ever heard one. This whole post is filled with misinformation. Each have their own towers (1/?)

10 years ago | Likes 48 Dislikes 3

Wrong parent company for T-Mobile, no mention of spectrum, and old plan info.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Some times there are colocation agrements where mutiple cariers are on the same tower. This is common in my area.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Each of them have things called roaming agreements, and "rent" the others networks (even Verizon does this). (2/?)

10 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 3

From personal experience with all four networks, Sprint has much better coverage (almost as good as AT&T and VZW) than you claim. (3/?)

10 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 4

This is the point in your posting I stopped reading. I live in Ohio. Sprint is absolutely shit, just like he(she?) described.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 6

My experience with getting VZW phone support to help is like yours getting sprint to help. I always hated selling VZW because of that. (4/?)

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 2

Sprints network in some areas of the country is better than VZW because the affiliate built out the network right. Others not so much. (5/?)

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

Saying that, always check out the dealers to make sure you get the best price and network for where you use it. (6/6)

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

I have verizon, and I had service in on the transformers ride at universal studios. On the ride- in a concrete building, underground.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

My verizon phone was the only one that got service at my summer camp in the actual middle of nowhere. 3 bars. everyone else had 0

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I finally ditched sprint here in MN after 10 years, the coverage is absolute shit. Rarely do I have service issues with VZW.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

But I do not like VZW customer service and prices.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is the point in your posting I stopped reading. I live in Ohio. Sprint is absolutely shit, just like he(she?) described.

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 5

May be shit in Ohio, but that doesn't mean it is shit everywhere.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

It used to be bad in the Seattle area, now it is the same as any other carrier

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I have service where almost none of my ATT friends have even a bar, and I've traveled all around the country. Verizon has the best coverage

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Verizon has the best basic coverage. Best internet and data speed is AT&T. but many don't like to admit it's AREA based, not company based

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Yeah it does.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I got sprint and it's fine. I guess im the minority

10 years ago | Likes 45 Dislikes 1

I just switched to sprint from Verizon a month ago, Verizon was sooooo much better

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

i have sprint and have never had problems

10 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

There are dozens of us! Dozens

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

at least 2 dozen

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Same here sprint brethren. Been with em 2 years and going strong. If you do your research, you can get great plans real cheap w/ coverage.

I have Sprint as well. Only one with unlimited data. I think I peaked at 15G in a month. Average 6-8G.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I have sprint because I refuse to pay for data, it's a rip off. It costs them pennies on the megabyte and their charging me dollars per.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm with you. I've had no complaints using Sprint in the last 8 years.

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

I work for Sprint and I have no problem talking about the terrible points of Sprint and there are many...but OP just made up tons of shit

10 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Having made that drive from Columbus to Cleveland and having service/data the whole way he's full of shit

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The street. One person's opinion on Sprint shouldn't make you write them off. They are not an expert for working at Verizon.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

My Bf and brother both work at Sprint and they do everything that can to help you get a deal of fix your phone while the Best Buy across 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I have Sprint. I drove across the entire length of I-10, I-15, I-20, I-70, and most of I-85, and had service everywhere but the Mojave

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Sprint for 15 years. Four of us on a family plan, all with iPhones, unlimited, text, data and insurance (12/mos) pay 220 a month 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

I had Virgin Mobile, which uses Sprint Towers. Couldn't get service at all in my house.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Yeah i live like 45 mins from a big city and its not the best reception at home

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I live in DC suburbs and work in DC. I get reception with Virgin Mobile everywhere here EXCEPT when I am in big buildings downtown.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Been with Sprint for over 5 years and I've never experienced bad customer service. 4g was flakey for a while, but much better now as.. (1)

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

..they've added more towers near my area. They tried to increase my monthly bill recently but with a bit of haggling I talked them down.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I have Sprint and have very little issues. Plus, Unlimited everything, even Data. So I'll take that over Verizon's 2gb/M bullshit.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I'm grandfathered into an unlimited family data plan.. I also live in NYC so I guess it's not that bad for me

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

incl. all fees. I even had a coverage issue in parts of my house; called Sprint. They sent me a free Airrave, boost from 1 to 4 bars. 2/2

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Yeah I think they are actually rated very well for cust. service? All info like this post is going to be biased. My Sprint has been great!

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Well done of what they started was wrong. The AT&T data is old and is NOT the parent company of T-mobil. And spring uses its own spectrum

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I know, right? Sprint did have a bad reputation, but I get the impression from my last few calls they are really trying.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Edge no longer exists. It's called "Device Payment Plan". That said, Verizon also completely revamped their pricing with the Verizon Plan.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Yea, now you get S, M, L, and XL plans. Totes professional

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's just different lingo. Should other businesses all switch from using the same lingo? The Verizon Plan will end up saving people 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, it's pretty creative. (It is pretty good though)

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

money if they were on Edge and/or do not have any phones still in in contract which is pretty cool if you ask me. 2/2

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"Just different" lingo matters in the scope of things. The device payment plan is great, the plan is pretty good too, depending (1/2)

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

on what your account is at right now. Some people double what they get for half the cost, some people get less for more. It aaaall depends.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Good point. It is a relative term. For that you get 1 internet point. Cheers!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

T-Mobile is the only carrier making waves now. Excluding them is very misleading

I've been with tmobile roughly a decade. They have the best plans hands down. I would make a post, but I don't know how from mobile. :(

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Republic wireless, anyone? $20/month, unlimited everything

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I have T-mobile for 14 years now. I love them as a company. Great customer service the few times i have needed it.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

2 and ask them about they will immediately take it off. Need extra time to pay your bill, like I do a lot, call them they give you more time

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

yeah, my bill is "due" on the 15th but i pretty much have all month to pay it without extra charge.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I have T-Mobile. I have a Galaxy s6, no contract, unlimited data/calls/texting etc. and only pay about $80. I live in Cali for reference.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've had Verizon and Sprint and I hate them both. Too overpriced and crap service. I've had T-Mobile for 4+ years and I'm not looking back.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This right here.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've used tmobile for over 10 years, and I rarely have issues with connectivity, pricing, or customer service. Their plans are great, too.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

they recently gave me 10gigs free... and i love that you can pay the phone off monthly instead of all at once.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My family has been with T-Mobile for 10 years now. It is definetely a great company

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

1 I switched from verizon to T-Mob 5 years ago. Phenomenal company. Customer service is AMAZING, no random charges, if I do get one I call

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I love me some T-Mobile. I had Verizon and AT&T previously and I'm happy I'm with T-Mobile now.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I'm with T-Mobile in GER, and while they're the most expensive carrier here, I've had the least issues with them. Unlimited texts/calls etc

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, I've been on all carriers & T-Mo's my favorite hands-down. I even get data at busy times (when ATT & Verizon folks can't get shit).

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Switched from Ver. to Tmo. Much happier, unlimited data, calls, txts. I pay $60 less for two lines than before. 10/10 customer service. 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I did the same. Switched from Verizon to tmobile, went from having a bill of 120/month to 70/month and i got unlimited 4g data.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oh.. and Fuck Verizon. I get unbuffered Netflix even when I let my kid tether her tablet. 2/2

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And the fact that with t-mobile you can travel the world and still not pay extra to use your data

10 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

Is this true? Source? I have T-Mobile and I've been turning my service off when I leave the country...

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I think they have a bigger hold on the european market than the American one. They're more popular there than here.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As a tmobile employee, I cannot tell you how great it is to work there. So many huge pain points of other carriers are just non existant!

I hate to fanboy it up, but being a Sprint customer of 4 years then switching to T-Mobile, I'm not looking back.

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Heck yeah! I was with sprint, and DAMN. Worst customer service I have ever experienced

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I gave up a grandfathered plan w/ Verizon to go with T-Mobile. Aside form spotty service in some areas, T-Mo is great. Employees rock too!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I gave up a grandfathered plan w/ Verizon to go with T-Mobile. Aside form spotty service in some areas, T-Mo is great. Employees rock too!

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Yay! That means a lot! We're working on the network but but for me customer service and prices can outweigh that sometimes

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I left my dad's family plan with Verizon and got T-Mobile because it's what I can afford on my own. Best customer service I've ever received

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I just switched from Verizon to T-Mobile and I'm not looking back. Coverage may not be as wide as Verizon, but the price can't be beat 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

whenever I want.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

and the customer service both on the phone & in-store is simply the best. They're not controlling at all and I have the option to leave 2/3

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

We work SO hard on customer service. Whole new meaning of customer service compared to anywhere else.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

seriously! the rep actually tried to HELP me with a new phone with my needs instead of selling me the highest priced one.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I love you guys at T-Mobile. I honestly feel quite welcome whenever I need to go to my local T-Mobile. So fucking friendly <3

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You must work on the corporate side, when they sell of your corporate market to an indirect, you get screwed royally.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Where can I look to find which company's cover my area best? (And actually real ones...) would help so much...

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My friend has T-mobile and is it true that they took away the plans so people have to pay full price now instead of having a 2yr plan etc.?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

you "pay off" the phone monthly for ~6 months, instead of full price at once.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

7 anymore either give them your phone or pay it off and you are done.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

6 so yes you do end up paying the full price on the phone but you aren't locked in to a plan for 2 years either. If you don't want them

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

5 or pay off what you owe, keep it, and get a new phone by paying the tax and starting a new device payment.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

4 bill for a Note Edge. Then after 6 months if you want a different phone you take yours back and either trade it in towards a new phone

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

3 the cost of the phone (you are essentially rent to owning the phone without the interest) I pay $28 a month on top of my regular service

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

2 on the full amount of the phone that you want (that's your down payment). Then you pay a certain amount extra per month that goes toward

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

1 what you do is go in and decide which phone you want. Then you tell the salesperson. You pick a plan that works for you and pay the tax

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

T-Mobile hasn't been acquired by AT&T and doesn't use their network- they have compatible tech (GSM vs Verizon's CDMA) but separate towers.

10 years ago | Likes 116 Dislikes 2

I was confused when he said AT&T is the parent company of T-Mobile. That would be Deutsche Telekom.

10 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 1

that's not what they said, they said AT&T is to Verizon, what T-Mo is to Sprint, the cheaper slightly worse version using different tech.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 7

There's nothing correct about that...

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

you saying I'm wrong and he didn't mean that or that his premise was wrong?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

wait, I just glanced at them and read the tiny T-Mo section, didn't see that he was making shit up all over the place about these companies

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

People get confused because in 2011 AT&T *did* try to buy T-Mobile for $39 Billion, but failed to acquire the company.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Also when roaming, T-Mobile steals every services bandwidth. +1 for T-Mobile.

10 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

yep, him saying "T-Mobile mostly rents AT&T’s network." is completely false 100% different bands, especially for LTE

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

T-Mobile also bought metroPCS and merged in their LTE network, making the entire network stronger. In cities, TMobile is major competition

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Even out of cities. I have had great service in rural Florida, although it was spotty just outside of Seattle.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I was a metro user for price reasons. After T-mob acquisition, I bought an unlocked Galaxy 4, pay 60/mo flat for unlimited LTE, love it

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

highly depends on the area

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yup, I would LOVE if T-Mobile could use AT&T's towers because it is kind of spotty in rural areas.

10 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

In some areas your T-Mo phone will automatically use AT&T towers. Unfortunately, data roaming limits are still a stingy 50 mb/mo.

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Data roaming allotments depend on current TMO policy and your data plan

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The bigger the data package, the more domestic roaming you can have with it. Still not a lot, but better than overages!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Not always - I have unlimited data, but I got cut off after 50 mb while I was on vacation. Boo!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Roaming does suck. But you can purchase extra roaming data, it's just something you have to do manually so it's not unintentional overages

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

ATT doesn't want tmobile to roam onto there network. It's a grandfathered in agreement... etc etc. Shit I should do a tmobile post >.>

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My only advice is to keep your grandfathered plans if you can. I still get unlimited data & 2 year upgrade plan bc I have a 10+ yr old plan

10 years ago | Likes 460 Dislikes 3

beginning. But many people protested and sued so they removed the speed caps. But recently I've received warnings again. Bastards!! (2/2)

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Do you see what happens when you don't reply to your own reply with your (2/2)? DO YOU?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There are trade-offs to this. If you are a low end data user, you are likely overpaying if you have unlimited data with AT&T or Verizon.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My brother got forced off. Verizon wouldn't give him a contract upgrade unless he got rid of the unlimited.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Same thing happened to me when I upgraded.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Love your username

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Just updated my phone this week and they said ATT would likely not still have 2 year plans when I'm due again. Bye unlimited data ;___;

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I work for AT&T and that's not entirely true You can keep your unlimited data but you have to sign up for the Next. 2 yr just order online

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Interesting. As with everything, I'll believe it when I see it. (besides I'm sure their rules will have changed in two years time =\ )

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's the only reason I stick with sprint. Unlimited data and service range isn't as good as verizon but it definitely is getting better.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

there are cases where switching is good. i used to have families come in paying 3-400 a month for all unlimited, and i could drop em to 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

about 180 or so on a ten-15 gig plan. msot these families averaged 2-4 gigs total a month for the past two years.some still wouldnt risk it

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I have "grandfathered" unlimited as well, through AT&T for about 8 years now. They tried to control the speed of unlimited at the (1/2)

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

four year mark, but now my porn loads just as fast as it used to (2/2)

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And that's why I'm happy with Sprint. Also, I've never had bad customer service with them.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My wife still has a grandfathered unlimited data plan, problem is after you reach so much data per month, you get your download speed cut.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Made an account to comment. The way to keep your plan when you need a new phone is to buy it and do it in installments added on your bill.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well for Verizon, I have had the same plan for about 9 years. It is unlimited everything. Also they do not throttle 4GLTE

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I stuck to the old cricket network for the longest time and they ended up giving me a free SG4 and 20GB for 50 dollars a month. >

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

> Even if you're not getting a great deal, they'll bribe you to switch you to more updated plans/networks.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This is the reason I left VZW, a year ago they refused to grandfather me back into my unlim. plan and get a new phone. I'd have stayed.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, my parents have a plan with sprint with 6 smartphones for 120/m. When my brothers moved out they just keep sending her 20 bucks every

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I've had sprint for 19 years. Never had a problem. 4 phones with unlimited everything for under $200. Once kept my phone on 3m past due.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Can anyone tell me what 'grandfather'-ing is?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Allowing you to keep your old plan if you don't make any changes to it. As long as I don't upgrade to a new phone, I keep my unlimited data.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My sister was grandfathered in on unlimited data on att. My dad put us on the family plan w/o notice. She lost her plan. She. Was. Pissed.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Depends on how much you use but the older plans do tend to be a little more expensive especially when you add more lines

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I had unltd data then BestBuy fucked me when I took phone in for service. Lost it,but I'm at 4gb for same price as fam pays for 2gb.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Anyone else still on the Virgin Mobile grandfathered plan?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Only if you really use it

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Same here, I'm going on 10 years now with my T-mobile plan.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've still got my two UDPs, never giving them up.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That is what makes me hesitate to leave my parent's plan.

10 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

I'll be sending my mom a check until I die. She talked about switching from Verizon to Sprint and I was about ready to kill her

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Not always true. while I was getting a good deal with ATT, i switched to Republic wireless and now i pay $10 a month. ATT couldn't beat it

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes and No. Sometimes the company will force you to switch out of your grandfather plans in some situation

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Most new devices (smartphones) will not allow you to run on plans older than 2 generations. Forced to new plans w/ new phone. -- Ex employee

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I upgraded to an iPhone 6 this summer with no issues. (ATT)

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hasn't been an issue for me so far on VZW, got an HTC One M8, two UDPs.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My s5 works fine on my contract plan from 2012

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I got a new S5 a year ago and was able to keep my plan. Mind you, I had to pay the full cost of the phone.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Worth it imho. Paid full for note 2 and rooted. Flash a new rom and it's like a new phone.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah, this way I get to keep my unlimited data and am not beholden to Verizon :)

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I had it with AT&T. I took a plan that was $100 a month less. No regrets.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Jesus Christ. What were you paying? My wife and I have ATT, my data is unlimited, hers is 2gb, and we pay $115/mo total.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

$270 for 4 lines.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Been with T-mobile for 13 years. All old plans are being converted, but at good prices. I've got 2 lines, Unlimited 4G data, text for $80.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I switched to republic wireless I paid $14 last month for my 4G. they pay you back for what you dont use.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Switched to t mobile from Verizon, do not regret it at all.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

This should be Part 3: How to get/keep unlimited data without paying out the ass.

10 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

I buy all my phones outright off ebay and just switch over the sim card. Sucks paying a lot for phones but unlimited data is SO worth it

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Honestly, as an employee, they are taking away loopholes. You may keep it, but your bill will increase, and it'll still be expensive

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes unlimited data. I burn though like 60gb on imgur a month e___e

10 years ago | Likes 34 Dislikes 0

Geeze I think you need to run a task killer or something to stop it from using so much data when you're not actively browsing.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Meh I pay 35$ a month for unlimited data and its never throttled plus it's an iPhone

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Right. Got unlimited. BALL OUT!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I thought I went through a lot with my 19 gig/month usage. Unlimited data is the shit.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Idk when my cycle ends but

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Damn, that's some data use. +1 for you. I have Sprint, been with them since 2001 and they've been good to me.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Same here, grandfathered unlimited 4G. Have been told that taking a 2yr upgrade will end that, though.

10 years ago | Likes 117 Dislikes 0

Same here

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You can by a phone separately and then have them activate it to keep the unlimited-that's what my mom did.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I have AT&T and am grandfathered in w/unlimited data & I was able to buy an iPhone 6+ w/2yr upgrade and not lose it. YMMV

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

swappa.com is your friend.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I found a way around it that works but I am not posting it here. PM me if you want to know how.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I am on AT&T with unlimited data and a 2 year upgrade. I am probably gonna research how I can keep my plan for my next upgrade and then 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I had to complain to keep my plan. Prob just buy a phone outright to upgrade next time :/

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I wanted to do a new contract and I had to pay FEES to DOWNGRADE from unlimited. So I went home and torrented 80GB with my unlimited data.

10 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 0

Eventually they will cut you off and terminate your contract.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Jokes on them, I did it every other month and then I canceled them. Oddly they begged me to stay.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

buy a sim-free phone, as no fancy phone is worth losing unlimited 4G.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Upgrade another (non unlimited line) then transfer the new phone to your line, simple as that (did this within last year on Verizon)

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Probably going to end up just buying an unlocked phone at full price next time since we're out of lines to upgrade but it's worth it.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Pretty sure there's a way to do keep the plan. It involves keeping the same SIM card. Check out Verizon Wireless' Reddit page.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

On Verizon, I was able to keep my grandfathered unlimited data by using a 2 yr upgrade from a non-smart phone to buy the new phone, then 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 41 Dislikes 0

activated the new phone on the dumb line; re-activated the old phone, and just put my old SIM card into the new phone on the unlimited line.

10 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 0

You can do that but they will make you pay the days plan for the full 24 months on the dumb line

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yup!

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

My brother took a 2 yr upgrade and his unlimited data ended.

10 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Same here. It pissed me off big time.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

That's why I pay full price for my droid and root it. I've had the note 2 for ~30mth and will flash a new ROM when I feel like a "new" one.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

The Note 2 is not a Droid. One is Samsung and the other is Motorola.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

There are droids that are non-Motorola.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Apologies. Due to character limitation, I shortened android operating system to "droid" without considering the misnomer.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If you have no idea what's going on with T Mobile in the last years, and how they changed the whole market - I find it hard to believe you.

10 years ago | Likes 237 Dislikes 6

I work at Verizon currently and even his info on Verizon is now outdated and wrong, we just changed our price plans august 13th

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, reading this made me think it's just a verizon shill post.

10 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 1

Could you elaborate? Looking for better carrier options but Verizon and AT&T don't seem like the answer

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

T-Mobile is amazing, I'm a happy long-time customer. What would you like to know?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You dont have to like t mobile. But you can't ignore that they're changing things in a positive way.

10 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

Too true. They're as much a money grubbing carrier as the next one, but they've got good business practices and are offering a LOT now.

10 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 1

This. Whatever you think of John Legere, it's undeniable that his influence has changed the way all the major carriers do business.

10 years ago | Likes 50 Dislikes 1

What? He's saying he doesn't have personal experience with TMobile users or their customer service.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

He isn't remarking on whatever pretentious bullshit you've read in the tech magazines at the dentist's office.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Last I heard, they passed Sprint's number of subscribers, making them the 3rd largest in the US.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I LOVE TMO. I pay $100/month for 6 lines at 2.5gb of data each, and unlimited call and text

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Maybe he doesn't know much about them because people don't switch from T-Mobile to Verizon... I think that speaks volumes for T-Mobile.

10 years ago | Likes 53 Dislikes 0

That depends on where you are, I worked at Verizon for over a year, had plenty of people coming from T mobile. I live in Idaho though.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I changed from Verizon to T-Mobile after being with Verizon for 10 years. Best decision I made. Oh, and they paid off my contract

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

why would you? I have T-Mobile, The ONLY reason that I might consider changing over to Verizon would be to improve my coverage, but I'm good

10 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

i'm still on a family plan with my parents. we share 1000 minutes a month and unlimited texting but data is limited. not sure i want to chan

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Recently switched from ATT after 9+ years of service. TMobile is so much cheaper, with amazing international plans.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Switching to T-Mobile (from Sprint) this week. Used to have T-Mobile with no issues. Kinda angry I left to begin with. They offer a lot now

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

This. Over the past year or two tmobile has changed the game to balance the consumer/carrier benefits.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I have also had the best experience with them. Great customer service & happy that they have included service to Canada and Mexico.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've had T-Mobile 6+ years with no issues. Their customer service is excellent and their plans are affordable.

10 years ago | Likes 56 Dislikes 2

Seriously. We pay for my parents and siblings phones, 7 lines 14gb of data $160. You can't find that anywhere else.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My family just got T-Mobile phones, and we had nothing but an excellent experience. Everything you've just said is 100% true.

10 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 1

Meanwhile.. My tmobile bill changes by a few dollars each month and I have no signal if I leave city limits. For a sales job.. no bueno.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My coverage isn't fantastic but the price and customer service are great.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

T-Mobile for 10yrs. Good CS. Good prices. Signal a little spotty but it's good overall! I love T-Mobile.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Customer service was excellent. Their cell phone coverage, not so much. At least not data.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I agree. I've not had much to complain about other than their data coverage dropping at random moments.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I had 4g where i live and where my parents live, 8 miles away, i got E. What the fuck is E?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I believe it stands for Edge. Meaning you're at the Edge of your data coverage area and thus can't get jack.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

E Is EDGE and it's super slow. Like 128kbps slow. Remember dial up? Yea....

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Just searched:"The "E" stands for 2G, while it performs slower than 4G, it still should be working, especially if you are getting 3-4 bars."

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah. That, and not mentioning the huge investment in their own network they made a few years ago after at&ts failed attempt to buy them.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Verizon has slowly been changing to the way tmobile works as well, with the ability to make payments on phones and now no contract moves

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Also T-Mobile is great if you are traveling internationally.

10 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 1

Don't they provide free roaming on other T-Mobile/Deutsche Telekom networks?

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I think it was messaging and data if I remember, and calls weren't very expensive. Service was spotty but that could be due to where i was

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

TMUS also added free roaming/LTE speeds in Canada and Mexico.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I have T-Mobile and went to Italy this summer. Unlimited text and Roaming was great, would reccomend. Calling was kinda expensive though

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

To my knowledge, yes. There's NO WAY other carriers can compete with its international plans.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

T-Mobile was the one carrier I really wanted to hear about. If I switch from AT$T it will be to go to TMob.

10 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

I'd do it. I pay $50/mo for unlimited talk, text, 4G data. Coverage isn't great in more rural areas but rocks in cities. I love them.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I made that switch & it's been great. Nearly 2 years in & no bump in my rates (and added complimentary data stash to boot).

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've had it for two years now. Best move I could have ever made.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

The only thing holding me back is that I am grandfathered into an unlimited data plan with AT&T. My wife isn't and goes over her data a lot.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Does AT&T still charge more if you go over on data? Because T-Mo will just slow you down to a lower band the rest of the billing cycle.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yep, my wife gets overage charges every month.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've got unlimited data with TMO, I pay like $70/mo but I also use a shit ton of data

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

i dont pay attention. What has T Mobil done in recent years ?

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

They have a competitive 4G LTE network now. Did away with contracts and overages. Use your phone internationally without penalty.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Another carrier the amount of data the 3 phones combined use would cost me at least 350+ I use my 4G to do everything and it never runs out

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

A lot of the no-contract pricing and Next/Edge installment plans started at T-Mobile. They've helped push down pricing in the industry.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Well personally I have 3 phones under my name and I have true unlimited 4G for all of them and I only pay about 60 for each. If I was on

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

T-Mobile has TERRIBLE phone selection, but really good pricing and plans. They were SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper than AT&T.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 10

Exactly what kind of phone are you looking for?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I ended up going online and buying the ASUS Zenfone 2. Better than all the phones T-Mobile had, cheaper than most of them, and it's unlocked

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Basing your carrier choice on phone selection is a weak point. T-Mobile is a GSM network, most phones used worldwide will be supported.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Well, since the two main components to a cell phone plan are the cell phone and the plan, I have to disagree. But yes, service matters more.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

They have the top Androids and iPhones. What else are you wanting? Lol

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

If by "top Androids" you mean the Samsung Galaxy. And by iPhones, you mean the iPhone, then I think we've hit the problem.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 5

They have Sony, LG, Samsung, Nexus, what else do you want? And they have iphone 6/6+ and the 5/5s. Are you looking for a flip phone?

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Guys. I was literally at the store TWO DAYS AGO. We changed plans. I checked ALL the phones. "Options" does not mean good selection.
