Ah, I live in one of those big cities, that's why I didn't notice ^^

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Only German bigotry can manage to ruin something so useful that's been given for free. Like I would care for their e'fn garden gnomes. :|

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I would not call it bigotry that we have privacy laws here and people are using those.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The ethnically diverse one does not mean racially diverse. I was just reading about this. In Africa, they count each tribe as an ethnicity.

10 years ago | Likes 192 Dislikes 2

And that would mean each European culture should count. Such as Croats, Poles, Bosniaks, Welsh, Irish, etecetera...

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's also hard to read if you're red green colorblind.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

So much this I hate when things use that kind of colour gradient

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Only if you call "black" a race. Neighbouring tribes in Ethiopia might be less closely related than people from Ireland and Greece.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

That's silly. That would a bit like counting different nationalities as ethnicities in Europe.

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 6

Which many people would - they're ethnicities, not 'races'.

10 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

By any of these I would still think the US would be as green as that chart gets, just from all the different Native American tribes alone.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

I guess it makes a difference if a myriad of groups are below 0.0001% of the total population.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Maybe that's why it says ethnically diverse instead of racially diverse.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Yeah, otherwise Canada would be pretty bland at 86% white. But this counts "English" as diversity.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

yea you knew something was off when it said the US- the original melting pot nation- was not diverse

10 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 6

I always told the Americans that there was more diversity in my country comparing to them and they never believed me, but it really is true.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 4

America is ethnically diverse as well — all the various European cultures as well as the south american, black and Asian ethnicities...

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

America is ethnically diverse as well — all the various European cultures as well as the south american, black and Asian ethnicities...

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

The original melting pot? I'd argue an ancient culture holds that distinction. If not a Middle Eastern empire or Egypt, then certainly Rome!

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 4

I think it's implicit in the "melting pot" moniker that youve accepted ppl's voluntary migration, not just conquer their lands & absorb them

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

Regardless of the cause, melting pot as a metaphor simply refers to a mix of cultures becoming homogenised.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Exactly. Rome didn't exactly let them keep their cultures. They forced them to be "Romans."

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think by melting pot, it is meant to a global standard. They didn't have many latin americans in Rome... Or East Asians...

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

So Germany and Japan lost the war, but are living the longest. Joke's on us, I guess?

10 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 3

That assumption makes no sense at all from the maps. We did, however, procreate right after the war and kinda stopped a few years ago^^

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Or they have low birth rate...

10 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

Japanese live the longest, but . What kind of life is that?

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Play vidya and watch hentai porn. Sushi. Tentacles. I'm done.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's not what the map is showing, it just shows that they have an ageing population.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

we live long and quite comfortably, our social care is good and healthcare are among the best in the world. I'm happy to have lost ww2. :)

10 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 4

So Japan or Germany?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Germany

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Is this because having lost the war they didn't have to spend on defense, and invested instead on health?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I don't think you know what you're talking about. We had a giant army during the cold war compared to our countrysize.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I asked a question, I didn't make a statement.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

an unnecessary one

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

As in almost half a million soldiers during peacetime, several thousand battletanks, hundreds of planes and dozens of ships.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

These were fucking awesome. More.

Polar ice caps melting: Lots of misconceptions on this. The north cap is floating ice. If it melted it wouldn't increase ocean levels. (1/?)

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Shhh!

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 3

(9/?)

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

(5/?) If the *continental* ice of Antarctica melted, it would definitely raise sea levels.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

(4/?) Most antarctic ice is on the ice shelves, which are *already* supported by the ocean. So if they melted, the wouldn't change levels.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

(6/?) But ice core samples show it hasn't melted in 60 million years. During that time, global temperature has been far higher than--

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

(8/?) Oceanic level rise has almost nothing to do with melting ice caps. It's caused by heat expansion of already-liquid water in the ocean.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

(3/?) The south cap is supported by land, so it would increase ocean levels, but nowhere near as much as depicted.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

(7/?) --even the worst estimates of what modern global warming will reach. So Antarctica won't melt, no matter how bad things get.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

(2/?) Put some ice in a glass of water, note the water level, let the ice melt. You'll see the level doesn't change.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Umm...if ice is sticking out of the ocean above the level, it certainly will increase the level when it melts.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

2/2 Put a huge piece of ice where it sticks out of a glass of water, fill water to top. As water melts back into glass, glass overflows.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Nope. See for yourself. Ice floating in water displaces it's own mass of water. When it melts it becomes that same mass of water. No change.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A boat doesn't displace it's own mass in water. Ice as a solid is no different. I'm not going to argue with Imgur. I'll stick with science.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

At this point I'm fairly sure you're trolling. If so, well done. If not, talk to other people about this to learn how it works.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

No it won't. Even if it's sticking out, water is still supporting that mass. It's not weightless, gravity is still pulling it down.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As a single 20 year old living in japan this depresses me

10 years ago | Likes 129 Dislikes 3

maybe, just maybe, japanese just lie less when asked about this than in other countries. Is not easy to accept not having sexual life.

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 8

You should team up with the Germans and organize a swingers party.

10 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 0

They've already done that and it didn't end well... they had some pretty strict criteria for admission

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

There'll be Italians there, but they'll leave early.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Move to Utah as a non-mormon and you'll get about as much sex

10 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 1

Why?

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Because apparently everyone else is having sex. Everyone.

10 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 3

You can beat the statistics or at least try to.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This is why all of the "slice of life" manga. And all the hentai.

Man the mortality rates (median age) in Africa though.

However as they continue to progress economically if they can avoid the tipping point, they will be in excellent shape. Difficult, but pos.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And issues like starvation have already greatly diminished. Its the ignorance and mysticism fueling warfare, AIDS, etc, that worries me

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

also, the lack of access to birth control

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

One of the reasons I admire the Gates family :) http://www.gatesfoundation.org/What-We-Do/Global-Development/Family-Planning

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

It's similar to the European middle ages! 15 year olds had babies back then just to die at their 30's by some horrible plague.

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 3

Uhh, noo. There were a lot of old people around in the middle ages, it's just that a lot died by wars or illness, and high infant mortality.

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I think that's what he said. It was possible to get old, but so much war and disease that it wasn't likely.

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Seriously, that's the saddest image and I bet a lot of people don't understand why.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 4

I bet a lot of people do. It's on the ads all the time.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

What do you mean? It's totally rad that the people there manage to stay so young.

10 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Not just that, also LEDCs have more subsistence farming which requires more children

10 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

Which just means swap out the type of farming.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 8

spot the geographer

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

that's SATs level Geography, I didn't even take it for GCSEs.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

LEDCs? Excuse my ignorance

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Less Economically Developed Countries. The counterpart is More Economically Developed Countries.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Those numbers are misleading. They include infant mortality rates. If you exclude them the number would raise. Same with life expectancy.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Thats not misleading. Why would you not count that?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

After I typed that o realized I was incorrect

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Dead babies are dead people.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

After typing this I realized I was incorrect

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well it's still an interesting statistic. Like, what's the average life expectancy if you remove everyone who dies before three.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If you do that you get a more realistic number. Because you hear about historical people always living to what seems to be an old age for1/2

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Their time. When you dont count the deaths of those younger than 3 the number is more realistic. If you survive being a baby youre good 2/2

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Chrome has almost achieved world domination

10 years ago | Likes 189 Dislikes 3

Chrome runs so shitty, I wonder why it's so popular

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As a German, fuck Chrome. I'm not letting any google software onto my PC.

10 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Ahahahahahahaha. You're funny... Google is everywhere.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 4

F-droid on rooted phone, duckduckgo, nightly on pc with GNU/Linux. it's that easy.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Why web browser does one use than? Please tell me it isn't bing.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 6

Wherefore*

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

TIL bing is a web browser

10 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

You've made my day.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You mean search engine? DuckDuckGo

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Yeah that's what I meant. I have never heard of it until now.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Everything is Chrome in the future!

10 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 2

Futureeeee fuuutuuurreee

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh my god sponge bob predicted it!! O.O

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I think Germany doesn't want to be part of world domination anymore and just keeps using Firefox *shrug*

10 years ago | Likes 41 Dislikes 0

Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it- George Santayana. German remembers what happened in the 20th Century.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'm British and use firefox mostly because I like foxes and a firefox sounds well cool idk

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I save every cute pic and gif of animals I see on here. But foxes get their own folder because I also love them to pieces <3

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

me too and i also use firefox but mostly because i like it better :D i'm not german though so i don't know their reasons :P

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

To be honest I use both Chrome and FF. Chrome for tumblr and Imgur and FF for everything else because imgur likes to kill FF.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They remember the last time someone tried doing that and would rather have no part in it. Again.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

so as a german: why is chrome better ?

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

it isn't. stick with firefox beta or nightly and you are good to go. warum schreib ich das eigentlich in englisch?

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

weil man in imgur immer in englisch schreibt. (my german sucks)

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well your german was perfect. You even wrote everything small, like every german does (we are lazy..)

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As a German: I dunno. I use Firefox because I am most comfortable with it. All these Addons and stuff. Also Chatzilla^^

10 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

As an American, I use Firefox because of addons, Bookmarks, and Open Source Software. Though mostly the second one.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As an American, I use Safari. World domination will be coming no time soon, no sir... Chatzilla is wonderful, though.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

After Firefox first came, it got gradually worse. So people switched to Chrome. Then Chrome also got worse, while Firefox got better again.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I really hope Google is not run by some "Dr. Evil" type mad genius, or we're in trouble!

10 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

The future is terrifying.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

hope dies last: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R7yfV6RzE30

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

google sucks at being evil though https://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/password_reuse.png

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

Chrome has a password generator built in now. It autosuggests one when you reach the password field on registration pages and saves it.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

the only thing they don't know is your password. search for salting and hashing.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

salting requires a good enough random number generator, which google wrote themselves. dun dun DUNNNN

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Great post! 1 complaint: does it bother anyone else that the Jupiter/Mars pic is in the wrong order?

10 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 1

It does now. Thanks for ruining it! :p

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

yes, me!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

[OCD twitching]

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It bothers me that North America is missing its southern tail (Central America), especially on Jupiter where there's room for it.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It doesn't fit because Uranus keeps taking up all the space. I'll see myself out.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Climate change deniers are actually just trying to get rid of Florida.

10 years ago | Likes 62 Dislikes 2

Hey I live in Atlanta! Beachfront property now!

As someone outside of Philly, can't tell if underwater or beach front property.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Scandinavia! Boo-yaah! Buuuut. We're still screwed because of the golf stream.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In the season chart u could just see Florida go from wet to dry.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Louisiana too... Good riddance

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

But I live here :(

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Florida's evidently trying to get rid of itself.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

goodbye florida, its been fun, don't come back

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And the Dutch. Smug motherfuckers...

10 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

Half the state of Louisiana is also completely fucked.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Louisiana is already fucked, hell or high water.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I grew up in Louisiana, lived there for about 21 of my 28 years & can confirm this. At least we'll be drinking & dancing as the water rises.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

They are so fucked. I am intrigued by the thought of where all the people would go.. Because that is pretty much their entire country. 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I do bet that they didn't even take into account all our Dunes and dykes when making this map though. We would already drown *1

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Half our country at this point without the dunes and dykes everywhere.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

My imagination says Gargantia style huge ships and my brain says begging in central europe.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

The Dutch are training for the counter-attack on Germany, we're 70 years late but we will get our revenge and demand a lot of land.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

OH! OH! My imagination also says: Massive floating LEGO houses!

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Thats the Danes, not the Dutch

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

As a german: Firefox ftw

10 years ago | Likes 75 Dislikes 1

i'm going to try spartan out, both firefox and chrome seem really slow to me compared to ie 11.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

you're a disgrace for every internet user EVER... but you are bold af... so you have that going

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Nice.

Irish: Ditto. Mainly because of RequestPolicy and the All-in-One Sidebar addons.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Nobody will separate this italian from his red fox

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

On a related note, can an Indian on imgur tell us what is UC?

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I'm glad humanity decided to better itself and slowly stopped using internet explorer after 2009.

I think it's pretty funny that Canada and Mexico converted to Chrome before the States and Chrome was MADE in the US.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well, South Korea... despite being known for their high speed internet, majority still use IE...it's almost a requirement.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Isn't that because of a history of sites using IE-specific features for security instead of SSL?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

YEah... I live there (here?) and it drives me bonkers.

A good but unpopular reason to use other browsers than Chrome is to prevent Google from dominating the market 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Funny thing is, Internet Explorer post 2009 really isn't that bad while Google Chrome has continually gotten worse and worse.

10 years ago | Likes 45 Dislikes 4

Only complaint I could have about Chrome is memory use, but I have yet to worry about using all 16GB (unless I'm using a VM simultaneously.)

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ya I use Firefox now

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I agree. I went back to ie and, as a previous hater, I found it works great now. Chrome is a memory hog.

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

MS totally destroyed the brand equity Internet Explorer used to have. It's why they are dropping the name for their new browser with Win10

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Chrome sucks + IE was getting better with IE9, IE11 is quite good. I use FFox and IE11. Can't wait for the new browser that will replace IE.

I'm very curious about the reasons for the proliferation of Opera in Africa, though. Anyone?

10 years ago | Likes 107 Dislikes 0

Bundled with OLPC maybe?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I do know that mobile browsing is more popular there than elsewhere - perhaps that influenced it?

10 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 0

You nailed it. According to Opera's own analysis, mobile bandwidth usage increased 5-fold. So it makes sense they'd want a lightweight (1/2)

10 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

browser. Source: http://www.operasoftware.com/smw/2014-02 I think they may be on to something. Chrome is killing EVERYTHING I own. (2/2)

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Opera is a proxy browser which strips out unimportant data. They're still just getting 3G now, so it could take 10 minutes to load a page /1

10 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Opera *can* strip out unimportant data. Not necessarily. Depends which settings you use.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Yes it can and doesn't necessarily have to, but the point is that is why it's so popular in less established countries.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's because of Opera Mini that works on crappy festure phones.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

It just means that the people with internet there are smart enough to change their browser from default, unlike US where everyone has access

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'd be using Opera too if she donated as much as she did to them. Fucking respect.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Opera Mini for phones or Opera with Turbo for PCs. Small, fast and data efficient.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It just means that the people with internet there are smart enough to change their browser from default, unlike US where everyone has access

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I would say more "money conscious". If they start throttling internet rates in the US, you bet your ass the number of "internet savvy" (1/2)

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

people would double in the US too. It's about fast browsing with low bandwidth, the general consensus in this thread seems.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Opera has a lot of features to save bandwidths (like stripping images, and such), and is pretty lightweight. Great for shitty internet.

10 years ago | Likes 127 Dislikes 0

Chrome supports stripping videos.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I also support stripping videos

Has. If anything, they have more. I use it, everything is lightning fast. That and Maxthon Nitro. Try both, you will love the speed.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

No, Opera lost nearly all its features after switching engines. I still use 12.17 myself, with Chrome alongside it. Vivaldi as 3rd.

There have been studies done on Japan because of this. A lot of young people just don't want to.

only because "jacking off to images created by hyper-repressed porn artists" wasn't included on the map

10 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 0

There is no color on the scale past dark blue to cover that territory...black. lets just call it black. it still isn't dark enough.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hmm, a nice hot pink would actually probably be better.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's actually a huge problem for them. Many young people detest the very idea of sex, and the government has no idea what to do about it.

10 years ago | Likes 40 Dislikes 1

I can relate to that. Sex is just way to complicated, shameful and debasing to everyone involved. Also no one is offering. *4everalone*

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Also, I think a lot of people think it will interfere with their careers which they see as more important.

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

This. Loads of women dont seek relationships because there's still an expectation that marriage = women dropping out of work entirely.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Well, it's certainly not caused by an unhealthy perception of sexuality due to excessive tentacle porn.

10 years ago | Likes 34 Dislikes 1

Now that I think about it, I don't know what a normal amount of tentacle porn would be.

10 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

Well, we need a unit of measure. Maybe tentacles per minute? Tentacle penetration amount per video?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Now that I think about it some more, this is more than I wanted to think about tentacle porn in the first place.

I always thoughy Australia was quite Ethnically diverse.

10 years ago | Likes 88 Dislikes 6

The "white european" segment of the australian pie graph would be enormous. We are not ethnically diverse at all

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

Racial diversity and ethnic diversity is a different thing. Big cities in UK and AUS might be quite diverse, but nowhere near Africa.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

I bet Russia is one of the most diverse country in the world merely because of its gigantic size

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The creator has chosen language as a proxy for ethnicity. That's why countries like Switzerland are marked as diverse.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Switzerland IS ethnically diverse. A quarter of the population was born outside of Switzerland, the highest percentage worldwide.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thats only slightly higher than Australia's rate, yet Ch is green and Aus is red. Linguistic diversity correlates directly with colour here

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Just to be clear: I didn't object to your claim that linguistic data was used in the analysis. 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It just sounded to me like you were saying CH is actually NOT ethnically diverse. 2/2

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The map is built from this paper on fractionalization http://post.economics.harvard.edu/hier/2002papers/2002list.html

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I feel like their method is organizing by how non-dominant of a majority ethnicity there is rather than the amounts of different ethnicities

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not really. 1/2 have British ancestry, 1/4 has Irish. We just think we're diverse cos we compare with our past & not the rest of the world

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Every asian person that has gone to Australia has told me they were racially scolded in some way.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Yeah, I'd like to see the data behind that. It made me question a lot of the other ones as well.

10 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

It could be a situation where the data is weighted: "50% diverse" = 0/10, "100% diverse" = 10/10

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

lol ethnically, not culturally

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There is certainly something fucky about this one. I too am going with the key being backwards.

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 3

It's not backwards - Canada's pretty diverse. I think Australia is just indicated incorrectly.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Yeah, that one I'm a little skeptical of.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Same with England. i think the key is backwards

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 4

I would think the US is more diverse than pakistan.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Although the Australian one may be wrong. As most australian do not have one common ancestry.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm more surprised that Canada>>>USA in terms of diversity

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

There's a surprising amount of diverse groups in random places. My tiny town has White Russians, Arabs, Ukrainians, Koreans, Natives...

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

If you count "European white" as one single ethnicity, it's not. Capitals aren't the rest of the country. I say that living in London

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Same with the UK. I'm half tempted to suggest that key is the wrong way around..

10 years ago | Likes 47 Dislikes 5

I find it hard to believe that the Congo is more ethnically diverse than Australia...

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I agree - I thought UK was rather diverse!

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Nationally it's 90-92% white - but that's grouping all white was one ethnicity.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I find it hard to believe that the Congo is more ethnically diverse than Australia...

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Different tribes, different ethnicities. They define themselves a lot more specifically, so that is a result of it.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ah, I see.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I doubt it's the wrong way. Canada is correctly portrayed. Incorrect data on some countries maybe.

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

The data is skewed because this map seems to group "white" as one ethnic group while making smaller distinctions of other groups

10 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 2

I thought the same, but the map shows Estonia as somewhat diverse even though we are close to to 98-99% white.

10 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

This would explain why most African countries are shown as very diverse, they usually include a large number of ethnic "choices"

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

I think its based off of census information. So some countries count "white" as one group while Estonia counts Estonians, Russians etc

10 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Yeah, something definitely fucky...

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

I think you have to see this relative to other countries. Australia and some european nations have 80% of the population belonging 1/?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

to a single ethnic group. While Belgium is 40% 60%. Switzerland has 3 ethnic groups. South Africa even has over 11.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Yeah I'm from Sydney and I think we are very diverse. I'd like to see the source for that one

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

Sydney =/= Australia. Major cities are almost always more diverse than the rest of a country

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I get that and rural Australia is pretty much 100% Aussie But I still fee like it shouldn't be that low

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Even other major cities in Australia are nowhere near as diverse as Sydney. Plus they count all people of European descent as one group

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sydney contains about 1/5 of the entire population. Most of our population lives in the major cities.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

But cities also hold a large part of the population... I dunno how much, but I thought a greater % of people lived in cities than towns..?

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yes, but urbanization rates are a little unreliable, as smaller urban areas such as towns are usually much less diverse than larger ones.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Fair enough. So does the ethnically homogenous total population of towns outnumber the ethnically heterogenous total population of cities?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They key must be backwards, can't imagine African countries being that diverse. America would still just be average though?

10 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 2

I can imagine. There are over 500 languages being spoken in Nigeria. There are many small tribes all over Africa.

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Madagascar here. About halfway in size between California and Texas. At least 18 native tribes and 4 noticeable non-native minorities.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It is, that surprised me too. Melbourne is a melting pot of almost every ethnicity you can imagine - the other capitals are likely the same

10 years ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 0

Major cities always have immigrants and cultures from everywhere. It's the bulk of smaller cities and villages that tend to be homogenous.

10 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

This is true, however Australia is highly urbanised, nearly two-thirds of the country's population lives in just the five largest cities

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Does that mean that the cumulative population of ethnically homogenous towns > the cumulative population of ethnically heterogenous cities?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

if you have 50% of people living in metropolises and 50% elsewhere and 50% ethnic pop in metro, 0% elsewhere, that's only 25% national pop.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Okay - is that representative? eg I know many of the biggest cities in GB (London, Birmingham, Leeds etc) are often very ethnically diverse.
