those who don't know roman numerals are I, II, III, IV so on
Arabic numerals are things like 1,2,3,4
we need a new plague. the last one didn't kill enough stupid people.

Maybe they should rather teach that 1 2 3 4 IS Arabic numerals.

I, for one, like roman numerals

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Our schools are openly disseminating weapons of math instruction!

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Ban Arabic numerals in schools. They should learn to count in binary instead. Why? Because fuck ‘em, that’s why.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

After binary teach them hex and machine code

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They don't know what "Arabic numerals" means. I'm so much smarter than them. /s

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 4

Well... learned something new 😅

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Used to work in a warehouse and marked stretch wrapped pallets with Roman numerals because it was easier. Coworkers would complain that they wanted English numbers. Got super upset when I explained there weren't any English numbers.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Who said education was wasted….

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

Wait until they hear about algebra.

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Yes get that algebra out of our schools, we don't need need no algorithms /s

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Psh, who needs numbers? If you can't count it on your fingers, it's too big anyway! And don't even get me started on "zero"!

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

At least they didn't have that in Roman times !

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I don't think I have ever heard it called Arabic numerals. This feels like one of those times where they use an uncommon word to a very common thing and then point and laugh at how stupid people are. Everyone has a phone on them. It shouldn't be that hard to Google something if you don't understand it to learn. That's what people should be doing, learning about it before voting on it

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Your epidermis is showing!

we need a new plague. the last one didn't kill enough stupid people.

To be fair, Trump tried

2 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

Yup. Instead of a bad cough and feeling like a truck hit you, it should have been anal bleeding, diarrhea, and pustules with death after seven days.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The last plague did not target stupid people...

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Not knowing the technical term for something does not make people stupid (or racist, for that matter, since that’s the implication here). If you asked people if kids in the US should be learning the Latin alphabet, you’d probably get the exact same results, not because Americans are racist against Romans, but because it sounds like something irrelevant to the basic skills students need to master.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 3

The fact that you have to describe what each number system is in your post description goes to show how uncommon the names are.

If the poll posted had the same description, what do you think the results would be?

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

This is the I time I see this and despite this fact, I am utterly unsurprised, if it is true. The entire planet recognizes that the American modern education system basically doesn't exist.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

I used to call them aerobic numerals in grade school.

I made a post on Facebook saying that all bacon was going to be halal once. The amount of fucking morons I had on my friends list was astounding

2 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

Could you explain to my friend? He knows the word halal but doesn't now the meaning or understand your statement

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Halal is the Islamic version of kosher. Muslims don't eat pork. Therefore bacon cannot be halal (allowed).

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I'm not sure if I understand that FB post. Were you threatening them with non-pig bacon?

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Please stop the stupidity!

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

To be honest most kids have at least a basic grasp of Arabic numerals before they get to school. The manipulation of the numerals through mathematics is what is important to teach.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

More importantly Arabic numerals gave us 0.

2 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 1

That's nothing

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

without 0 how would i be able to tell people how many fucks i give. its literally life changing.

We don't actually use arabic numerals. There was a "western arabic numeral" set that was like ours (not exactly) in 8 of the digits, the one we use was changed a bit in Europe in the 16th century. But the base 10 system was developed in India. If anyone gets the credit it should be them.

2 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

all things change. totally valid but i didn't know that india was first to develop base 10 math, thats awesome!!!

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Came down to the bottom to find the educated posts, once again.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Interestingly the Arabic language uses a different (but similar) set of digits.

2 years ago | Likes 39 Dislikes 0

isn't "similar" a bit far fetched?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's base 10 and the symbols are similar in style to Western Arabic numbers. It's clear that both number digits evolved from a similar system.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What does a 0 look like? The dot in the 10?

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yes, zero is a dot. And 5 is a 0.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

2 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 0

9 is 9, but 6 is 7 and 0 is 5... Damn they shuffled it.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Oh, *Arabic* Arabic numerals

2 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

This brings me back to the year I lived in Bahrain. 4 and 5 always messed with me

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Not too similar (except for 1 and 9), but interestingly the same system. They even write them in the same order as us, with the highest on the left and the lowest on the right, despite otherwise writing right to left.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, I believe 1,2,3,4 are indo arabic numerals, not just arabic

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

That makes it worse. /s

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It was called Arabic because European copied on them. The concept originally came from India. Arabic people don't event use the "European" symbol. It's just confusing.

I once studied how to add and multiply Roman numerals... No wonder the Roman empire collapsed as multiplying XXIV by VIII is really hard.

I wouldn't even know how to begin.
Were there techniques or 'algoritms' to do that? Like we do/teach long divisions these days?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes there are.... Of course I forgot how to this, but quick search through the modern encyclopedia yields this, for example: https://www.smartick.com/blog/mathematics/addition-and-subtraction/roman-numerals-add/

I was helping out in a kindergarten class at a montessori school because one of the teachers was in an automobile accident. I told one of the parents we were introducing Arabic numerals and they took their kid out of the class and I ended up in the principal's office helping her google Arabic numbers. 1) People need to know more! 2) The fact that something came from the middle east does not make it bad. 3) Christians fear other religions. That's not what the bible says on the matter.

I casually mentioned that Jews, Christian’s and Muslims all worship the same god to a devoted Muslim friend and it took him by surprise. Not sure everyone realizes that despite it being true. Seems odd to me because that should unite people..but we are all just dumb animals.

Montessori is pretty specific with proper names for stuff. The one my daughter went to wouldn’t even use nicknames for the children. Her old friends from Montessori still call her by her government name even though no one else does. (It’s actually very cute, as long as it’s not a dead-naming situation)

They told the parent arabic numerals.... Not the 6 year old. Are you a moron?

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Also, what would be so terrible telling 6 year olds what the numbers they learned are called?

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Because you can introduce the concept of numbers to a child without introducing their written form. Teaching a kid numbers could mean "you have three blocks" but teaching a kid Arabic numerals means "three looks like this: 3"

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

But it’s what they’re called. What else would you say, just “numbers?” I guess.

2 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Freedom Numbers

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

Numbers. Any teacher would just say numbers. Just like we'd say letters or working on the alphabet.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 8

I suppose you are correct. Logical. However, I would enjoy freaking out the MAGAs and making them realize that Arabs also contributed something of great value to the world. Just because.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

Oh I understand. There's just ultimately no reason for an instructor to phrase it as such. Sounds pretentious.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 4

Numbers and counting can be done without text, explaining to a parent arabic numerals let's the parent know exactly what's happening in class.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

If you told anyone "we're working on our numbers now in class" how many are NOT gonna think 1,2,3...?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And those teachers just passed up a chance to teach their students what those numbers you see are actually called. Thus stopping ignorant responses to hearing the term Arabic numbers as an adult

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

You can and absolutely should teach your students that but to put on the curriculum wouldn't even be needed. Because literally they are just that to us in this day and age . Numbers. Granted the parents are morons and raising a stink over fear.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If you actually take a look at the survey, you'll see that it was specifically designed to engage people's' preconceptions. They zinged the left as well as the right, and boy didn't I take flak the last time this was posted here for pointing out that the survey showed the left was just as susceptible to manipulation as anyone else.

2 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 86

Cool. Are you related to Mr Macaroni Fork?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And yet the right hates everything they don't understand.

2 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

That. Was. The. Point. Surveys are as reliable as their wording. Probably even less so.

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

There was no mention of right vs left... Anywhere. Wtf are you talking about?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There is no left in America. Americans need to stfu about the 'left' cos you don't fuckin have one.

2 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 1

We still have a left that is left of where our center is, even if that center is much more Right than it is in many countries (and less so than some countries). Just because it's different, doesn't mean it doesn't exist. And there is also Far Left (what I consider myself) that believes in the same things Left means in other countries and we don't just not exist because our country means heavily Conservative, so no we won't shut up about our existence or about our uphill battle in this country.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

You really suck to make this left-vs-right political …

2 years ago | Likes 80 Dislikes 2

Right?? No one said anything about right vs left.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Preconceptions *need* to be challenged. But saying the Left is just as susceptible is hogwash. The left asks for sources, the right -refuses to accept them-.

2 years ago | Likes 51 Dislikes 5

I’m gonna need a source for that.

2 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 1

I know plenty of people on the left who will just as vehemently deny sources.

Everyone accepted it at face value, because of course we "know" who those stupid people are. Just like the last time it was posted. I wonder if anyone responding here even bothered to look at the source. But why should they? They "know" they're right.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

1. I don't see a single comment here (outside of the negatives, which I didn't check) claiming it's a twitter survey. 2. Most people probably didn't bother to question it /because it's old and has been questioned multiple times in the past/. I really wonder what part of "a survey company posed this question and this is the legit response they got" you think makes those accepting it stupid...

2 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

Which ones? If you say Arabic, of course you would assume Eastern, otherwise the term is "numbers" or "numerals". Saying "Arabic" is trolling.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 17

If you need the disambiguation page to get the other meaning, and the default is Western Arabic, then that means that the normal assumption is Western, not Eastern.
