All crew members go through this, not just pilots. Ex wife has been a flight attendant for 25 yrs and still gets airport standby sometimes.

Depends on seniority/route. Senior pilots can get routes that basically amount to a 9-5 job. Newer pilots can be on reserve call, (1)
