Poor bastard ruptured his cruciate ligament while chasing a ball. We were meant to be moving to a Sweden in the coming week (from Australia), and now we'll need to wait a couple months until he's healed.

He's a bit down at the moment, but he's a chirpy fella, he'll be right.

Edit: I should definitely make it clear that I'm insanely lucky to have the partner I do. She doesn't even blink when it comes to dedicating resources to this dipshit. Also, here is a picture of better times: https://imgur.com/elGPbLz. So graceful.

EDIT 2: Answering a couple questions that are coming up a lot-
1. “Why no pet insurance?” Unfortunately, cruciate ruptures are often contributed to by pre-existing conditions (Like this one). Such cases unfortunately aren’t covered by the majority of brokers.

2. “Why can’t he travel? Sedate him!” ´That was a thought, however, there are a whole bunch of risks associated with sedating a dog over a long flight (22-28 hours in this case). From cardiovascular risks, to respiratory issues with air pressure changes, to risk of injury to the dog when conscious yet unable to feel discomfort. Furthermore, it’s difficult to keep a big dog (doggo is approx 50kg) sedated over such a large amount of time. Between airport restrictions, long flights, etc, it’s almost impossible to keep the dose up throughout.

Finally, thanks to all the well wishes! It’s hugely appreciated and it’s improved our day immensely. I’ll be sure to post an update when doggo is recovered and derping around in the snow!

I've seen procrastination but come on gotta draw the line somewhere!

My dog had her first ACL surgery 1 year ago. And her second in 1 week. $3,500 each time and 12 week recovery. It's worth it, hang in there

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My boy just had his left one done, he also had his right one done 15 Months ago, they heal quick your wanker will be back soon enough.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

He looks guilty

More fish in his diet will help repair the ligaments :)

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Sweden is perfect then!

My puppy is a Karelain Bear Dog. The Norse peninsula has quite a few in their dog population per capita. Fish is part of his diet. :)

From Australian spring to Swedish Winter. Good luck!

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Haha, I've done Aussie summer to Swedish winter. It was a 39 when I left Aus, -10 when I arrived in my Sweden home. Possible larger gap too

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ours had both done within one year at four years old. Is now almost 12 years old. Totally worth it.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Good to hear!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Good for you for choosing the pup over convenience. I've seen too many dogs surrendered because "it's too hard to move with a dog."

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah, fuck that

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Good excuse to take a cruise instead!

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That's a fucking looooong cruise!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Can you tell me how old he is @op

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

He is five!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Poor thing, my dad got a Rottweiler a couple years ago and I think he's already got hip problems :/

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, the old 'desired appearance' really did damage to the breed. They've done a really good job changing that in the last few decades tho

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm assuming the desired appearance was cropping ears and tail?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's part of it. But I was more referring to the hip and knee issues that have been actively addressed in the past 20 years or so.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

People don't get that. The cost of a dog is not the price you pay to own one. Its stuff like this. My dogs eye is kind of messed up. We -

8 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 1

Paid probably 2000 dollars trying to figure out what is wrong with it. Nobody knows. And if they get hurt on the weekend??? Instant $400.

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

This is why I keep saying I can't afford a cat/kitten right now, even though people keep saying, "But they're so easy and cheap!"

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Ugh, +vaccines +heartworm. + flea/ tick +Food +treats +Pet insurance +PB & pill pockets. They get allergies & need meds a few times/year

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

And that's before Illnesses and accidents! My lab has broken leg ($4k), lumps removed ($2k), stroke ($4k), and now has a tumor ( $ unknown).

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Worth every penny though. I love that pooch.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Cool silver lab. I have a weimaraner. People see your dog. Weimaraner. They see mine. What a beautiful lab.

Tips for when you move to Sweden. Don't talk to people or hug people you don't know. We like out personal space.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

All good mate, I've spent a LOT of time there in the last few years. :)

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Never hurts to repeat these things they are like the basic 101 of Sweden.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Love U guys <3

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I see you!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Can I ask if you're comfortable putting your dog in a plane? Im toying with the idea of moving from Brisbane to Perth but I have a greyhound

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I totally get the anxiety. There's lots to think and worry about. Search for a pet transport company! They handle everything. 1/

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Im using PetFlyers. As far as I know, a domestic flight like that should be no issue whatsoever! It'd definitely be better than driving! 2/2

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah 4400km is crazy to drive. My mate works on the Tarmac tho, and tells me horror stories. Some airlines are better than others to be fair

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, if you go through the pet transport company, they are pretty helpful when it comes to picking the right airline, etc.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As a Swede I say welcome, and which town are you moving to, if i may be so bold?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Umeå!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh thats far up north. That's 1181 km to umeå from here. Enjoy the midnight sun during summer, not so much fun during winter.

I feel your financial pain! My little fluff broke his leg last year. $7,000 later and he's good as new! Pets are family.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Same boat but.... my idiot ate an s.o.s pad -.- still can't believe it.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

haha wtf! I'm lucky, this fucknuckle doesn't chew too much. He just doesn't have an inbetween speed. It's 0 or 100. So he hurts himself.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I love that picture of him. Why do you have to wait? Because he is injured or for quarantine?

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Pretty much don't want him to be in pain in a crate for 22-28 hours (flight time). Especially if they're moving him. There's no other reason

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Yeah, that would suck. They do have pain killers and sedatives for dogs, talk to your vet if you want.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

There's actually a bunch of hazards with sedation and air travel. Breathing and heart issues can arise as air pressure changes, etc 1/

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Also, because it's such a long trip, it's hard, if not impossible, to treat them regularly, depending on airport restrictions, etc. 2/

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Yeah, true. Well I hope your little dipshit gets better quick. He's a cutie, I love rotties.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'd also worry that if he came to consciousness, he probably wont feel any discomfort in the leg, and so be likely to injure it more. 3/3

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I'm so glad he has you as an owner, OP. These things are so fucking expensive, and not everyone can afford it. Good dog, good person.

8 years ago | Likes 473 Dislikes 1

My veterinarian pet budget covers only "sending it to a farm"

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 4

:(

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

When I got my puppy, I had to drop quite a bit on him. Turns out he was from a puppy mill. Tick infestation, but I couldn't let him die.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I cannot trust a person who does not like dogs one bit.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

But you can always trust a dog when it doesn't like a person

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I'd wait and fight for its trust.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Be careful, once they tear the first CCL, the second is more likely to tear. My dog ripped both in the course of 2 years. ~10k in surgery.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Jesus that's ungodly expensive my dog had to have a leg amputated and it was only 600, I would have paid the extra to keep the leg but they

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Said there looked to be nerve damage and it would just slow him down.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, this was actually the second one! It's the timing, though, that really screwed us.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Same here as well. Our guy just tore his 2nd one. Seems like we just finished paying off his first surgery. We do what we do for love.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

This just happened to me. $4000 for the first knee. 10 weeks after surgery he started limping on the other one :( It's degenerative.

Now, it might not be the fastest way, but one hell of an adventure awaits if you take him on the open seas! (YARR)

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You're awesome. We just went through the same with our pup this spring. The recovery period is rough, but totally worth it for best doggos.

That's one thing I know about my husband. If the cat needs something, he'll pawn our wedding rings before he lets her suffer.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I sympathize. Mine has cost me $1500 so far and is undergoing laser treatments for a wound at the moment. Fucking dogs huh? lol

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

We still don't deserve their 100% commitment.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh and I've only had him 6 months

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Best attitude. I'm a vet student, so no money at all, but when the pets need a thing they're getting it. Sometimes with loan from parents.

8 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Im in the same boat, got pet mice that I adore. Had to loan a bit of money last week because one of them got sick

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I hate to be that person and dont get me wrong I LOVE my idiot dog but maybe you should have held off on pets until you could afford it more

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 9

That's pretty reasonable, many people take pets and can't afford them. Some people can't afford to buy (good)food or treatment. Poor pets..

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If they are getting the treatment they need, as both the above pets did, then it's all good! :)

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

I can afford it, I just pay my parents back if there's an unexpected HUGE expense which you generally don't expect with bunnies. ;)

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

True story. You just made it seem like you already have no money so to me(at least how I was raised) that means no extra things like pets...

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

(2) until I am set in my own expenses. I waited until I was 28 and owned a house to get a dog because I knew then I could afford it.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Both of my dogs needed cruciate repairs after acting like morons outside. Each was $1600 USD. That's with an employee discount.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

1-Ahh, pet surgeries. I wish price was the only cost. My cockatoo, well long story short, she has an issue that the best solution would be

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Sorry to hear that! It's a hard one.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

2-a hysterectomy. The problem is, the vets say the aorta is RIGHT there and she's tiny to begin with. So the room for error is like,

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

4-too scared to get it done. Either I take a huge risk with her life or she'll have a lower quality of life and probably lifespan. Sophie's

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

3-Battletoads bike level. They didn't literally give me percentages but the impression I got was she only had at most a 75% chance. So I'm

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I feel your pain mate. Two of my doggos needed operations this month. The joys of vet bills. (Good boy & girl are doing great BTW)

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

Ah, that sucks! Glad to hear that they're going good!

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

What happened that required them both to need surgery?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Only one had surgery really, he a growth removed from his gum. The other dog started having seizures so had to be put under and have tests

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

She's 12 so the Vet feared a brain tumor & prescribed epilepsy med, which seem to be working for her as she's not had an incident since.
