Poor bastard ruptured his cruciate ligament while chasing a ball. We were meant to be moving to a Sweden in the coming week (from Australia), and now we'll need to wait a couple months until he's healed.
He's a bit down at the moment, but he's a chirpy fella, he'll be right.
Edit: I should definitely make it clear that I'm insanely lucky to have the partner I do. She doesn't even blink when it comes to dedicating resources to this dipshit. Also, here is a picture of better times: https://imgur.com/elGPbLz. So graceful.
EDIT 2: Answering a couple questions that are coming up a lot-
1. “Why no pet insurance?” Unfortunately, cruciate ruptures are often contributed to by pre-existing conditions (Like this one). Such cases unfortunately aren’t covered by the majority of brokers.
2. “Why can’t he travel? Sedate him!” ´That was a thought, however, there are a whole bunch of risks associated with sedating a dog over a long flight (22-28 hours in this case). From cardiovascular risks, to respiratory issues with air pressure changes, to risk of injury to the dog when conscious yet unable to feel discomfort. Furthermore, it’s difficult to keep a big dog (doggo is approx 50kg) sedated over such a large amount of time. Between airport restrictions, long flights, etc, it’s almost impossible to keep the dose up throughout.
Finally, thanks to all the well wishes! It’s hugely appreciated and it’s improved our day immensely. I’ll be sure to post an update when doggo is recovered and derping around in the snow!

I've seen procrastination but come on gotta draw the line somewhere!
MoldyKetchup95
Omg he is dumb and adorable like my dog. Mine got his foot stuck in the toilet
auroraborealis9000
Get well! From Diezel
Muntz
He's beautiful!

Been there, done that. Six yo Jack Russell ruptured a disc in his neck last year running up the stairs. Bye bye to four grand.
cdracingzx6r
You a good human.
Muntz
Thanks mate.
RedBaronPUA
My dog had her first ACL surgery 1 year ago. And her second in 1 week. $3,500 each time and 12 week recovery. It's worth it, hang in there
Bigjoshmurphy
My boy just had his left one done, he also had his right one done 15 Months ago, they heal quick your wanker will be back soon enough.
fartinacolander
He looks guilty
schoodic66
Omg i was feeling so sad for the fella then i looked at “better times” and laughed so hard i snorted coffee out my nose thank you for that
Muntz
haha, as intended then!
Makato2003
money well spent! nice doggo!
StoneBonsai
More fish in his diet will help repair the ligaments :)
Muntz
Sweden is perfect then!
StoneBonsai
My puppy is a Karelain Bear Dog. The Norse peninsula has quite a few in their dog population per capita. Fish is part of his diet. :)

From Australian spring to Swedish Winter. Good luck!
Muntz
Haha, I've done Aussie summer to Swedish winter. It was a 39 when I left Aus, -10 when I arrived in my Sweden home. Possible larger gap too
SonderFall
Ours had both done within one year at four years old. Is now almost 12 years old. Totally worth it.
Muntz
Good to hear!
cattywumpus
Good for you for choosing the pup over convenience. I've seen too many dogs surrendered because "it's too hard to move with a dog."
Muntz
Yeah, fuck that
monsted
Good excuse to take a cruise instead!

That's a fucking looooong cruise!

Can you tell me how old he is @op
Muntz
He is five!
OGkilroy
Poor thing, my dad got a Rottweiler a couple years ago and I think he's already got hip problems :/
Muntz
Yeah, the old 'desired appearance' really did damage to the breed. They've done a really good job changing that in the last few decades tho
OGkilroy
I'm assuming the desired appearance was cropping ears and tail?
Muntz
That's part of it. But I was more referring to the hip and knee issues that have been actively addressed in the past 20 years or so.
AstronautChicken
People don't get that. The cost of a dog is not the price you pay to own one. Its stuff like this. My dogs eye is kind of messed up. We -
AstronautChicken
Paid probably 2000 dollars trying to figure out what is wrong with it. Nobody knows. And if they get hurt on the weekend??? Instant $400.

This is why I keep saying I can't afford a cat/kitten right now, even though people keep saying, "But they're so easy and cheap!"
linkinbuttersworth
Ugh, +vaccines +heartworm. + flea/ tick +Food +treats +Pet insurance +PB & pill pockets. They get allergies & need meds a few times/year
linkinbuttersworth
And that's before Illnesses and accidents! My lab has broken leg ($4k), lumps removed ($2k), stroke ($4k), and now has a tumor ( $ unknown).
linkinbuttersworth
Worth every penny though. I love that pooch.
AstronautChicken
Cool silver lab. I have a weimaraner. People see your dog. Weimaraner. They see mine. What a beautiful lab.

Moving from 'straya to Sweden eh? It's like you really want to live where people talk funny :V

Tips for when you move to Sweden. Don't talk to people or hug people you don't know. We like out personal space.
Muntz
All good mate, I've spent a LOT of time there in the last few years. :)
TheFreezingSwede
Never hurts to repeat these things they are like the basic 101 of Sweden.
alopexan
Love U guys <3
Muntz
I see you!
EngineerZero
Can I ask if you're comfortable putting your dog in a plane? Im toying with the idea of moving from Brisbane to Perth but I have a greyhound
Muntz
I totally get the anxiety. There's lots to think and worry about. Search for a pet transport company! They handle everything. 1/
Muntz
Im using PetFlyers. As far as I know, a domestic flight like that should be no issue whatsoever! It'd definitely be better than driving! 2/2
EngineerZero
Yeah 4400km is crazy to drive. My mate works on the Tarmac tho, and tells me horror stories. Some airlines are better than others to be fair
Muntz
Yeah, if you go through the pet transport company, they are pretty helpful when it comes to picking the right airline, etc.
nipaxon
As a Swede I say welcome, and which town are you moving to, if i may be so bold?
Muntz
Umeå!
nipaxon
Oh thats far up north. That's 1181 km to umeå from here. Enjoy the midnight sun during summer, not so much fun during winter.

I feel your financial pain! My little fluff broke his leg last year. $7,000 later and he's good as new! Pets are family.
CatLadyCrazies
Same boat but.... my idiot ate an s.o.s pad -.- still can't believe it.
Muntz
haha wtf! I'm lucky, this fucknuckle doesn't chew too much. He just doesn't have an inbetween speed. It's 0 or 100. So he hurts himself.
iamjackscompletelackofcompassion
I love that picture of him. Why do you have to wait? Because he is injured or for quarantine?
Muntz
Pretty much don't want him to be in pain in a crate for 22-28 hours (flight time). Especially if they're moving him. There's no other reason
iamjackscompletelackofcompassion
Yeah, that would suck. They do have pain killers and sedatives for dogs, talk to your vet if you want.
Muntz
There's actually a bunch of hazards with sedation and air travel. Breathing and heart issues can arise as air pressure changes, etc 1/
Muntz
Also, because it's such a long trip, it's hard, if not impossible, to treat them regularly, depending on airport restrictions, etc. 2/
iamjackscompletelackofcompassion
Yeah, true. Well I hope your little dipshit gets better quick. He's a cutie, I love rotties.
Muntz
I'd also worry that if he came to consciousness, he probably wont feel any discomfort in the leg, and so be likely to injure it more. 3/3
Feralkyn
I'm so glad he has you as an owner, OP. These things are so fucking expensive, and not everyone can afford it. Good dog, good person.
KingZullu
My veterinarian pet budget covers only "sending it to a farm"
Muntz

iamawaffleiron
When I got my puppy, I had to drop quite a bit on him. Turns out he was from a puppy mill. Tick infestation, but I couldn't let him die.
Deedeelee
I cannot trust a person who does not like dogs one bit.
UpvoteFairy3001
But you can always trust a dog when it doesn't like a person
Deedeelee
I'd wait and fight for its trust.
SirAtlass
Be careful, once they tear the first CCL, the second is more likely to tear. My dog ripped both in the course of 2 years. ~10k in surgery.
bigbootybigfoot
Jesus that's ungodly expensive my dog had to have a leg amputated and it was only 600, I would have paid the extra to keep the leg but they
bigbootybigfoot
Said there looked to be nerve damage and it would just slow him down.
Muntz
Yeah, this was actually the second one! It's the timing, though, that really screwed us.
WallysMommy
Same here as well. Our guy just tore his 2nd one. Seems like we just finished paying off his first surgery. We do what we do for love.
gabot045
This just happened to me. $4000 for the first knee. 10 weeks after surgery he started limping on the other one :( It's degenerative.

A partner who 'gets it' is a huge help. She isn't even slightly hesitant when it comes to putting resources towards my dude. Very thankful.
RyeInACan
Now, it might not be the fastest way, but one hell of an adventure awaits if you take him on the open seas! (YARR)
GenshiV
You're awesome. We just went through the same with our pup this spring. The recovery period is rough, but totally worth it for best doggos.
Feralkyn
Awesome :) YOU CHOSE WELL, and so did she it seems!
Muntz
We sure did! :)
danbrazier
They're good cunts, Dane.
LongDickStyleMadaFaqa
cattywumpus
That's one thing I know about my husband. If the cat needs something, he'll pawn our wedding rings before he lets her suffer.
Conflict
I sympathize. Mine has cost me $1500 so far and is undergoing laser treatments for a wound at the moment. Fucking dogs huh? lol
BurritoParty
We still don't deserve their 100% commitment.
Conflict
Oh and I've only had him 6 months
Cerinna
Best attitude. I'm a vet student, so no money at all, but when the pets need a thing they're getting it. Sometimes with loan from parents.
MaidsHeardTheGoblinsCry
Im in the same boat, got pet mice that I adore. Had to loan a bit of money last week because one of them got sick
Conflict
I hate to be that person and dont get me wrong I LOVE my idiot dog but maybe you should have held off on pets until you could afford it more
EpicMasterMan
That's pretty reasonable, many people take pets and can't afford them. Some people can't afford to buy (good)food or treatment. Poor pets..
Muntz
If they are getting the treatment they need, as both the above pets did, then it's all good! :)
Cerinna
I can afford it, I just pay my parents back if there's an unexpected HUGE expense which you generally don't expect with bunnies. ;)
Conflict
True story. You just made it seem like you already have no money so to me(at least how I was raised) that means no extra things like pets...
Conflict
(2) until I am set in my own expenses. I waited until I was 28 and owned a house to get a dog because I knew then I could afford it.
GalacticButtMonkey
Both of my dogs needed cruciate repairs after acting like morons outside. Each was $1600 USD. That's with an employee discount.

I feel your pain mate. Two of my doggos needed operations this month. The joys of vet bills. (Good boy & girl are doing great BTW)
Muntz
Ah, that sucks! Glad to hear that they're going good!
EnglishPolice
What happened that required them both to need surgery?
Clinteriffic
Only one had surgery really, he a growth removed from his gum. The other dog started having seizures so had to be put under and have tests
Clinteriffic
She's 12 so the Vet feared a brain tumor & prescribed epilepsy med, which seem to be working for her as she's not had an incident since.

Where in sweden are you moving to? I'm from småland.
battlestargingerpubes
Is Småland a really Smål place? (badum tsss)

Gonna be in Umeå. Spent a bunch of time there the last two years, partner has apartment there, etc. A fair distance from Småland!

Umeå? Prepare for windy days. Every day.

True!

Ooh, I live in Umeå :3

Umeå is like the next big thing. Growing so fast and especially young adults, including my brother (kinda sad he's leaving our island). 1/

My best friend actually moved to Australia five years ago and I haven't seen her since. Hoping this post is a sign she's coming home soon.2/
Muntz
Both countries are super attractive to the other. I'd never seen snow before going to Sweden, and I KNOW Swedes dont have beaches like us :D
skruttet
Anyway good luck in Umeå, and get a sun lamp or you will probably die from lack of sun. 3/3
Muntz
Cheers mate!
hyperkatt
Hello darkness my old friend.... Seriously though when I was moving to Sweden the ladies in the embassy said "you know it gets dark there
Muntz
Haha, I've been through an Autumn/winter cycle in Umeå already! It wasn't so bad. Could definitely get oppressive after a few years though!
imaginaryPeppers
Candles and hygge all the way!
hyperkatt
In the winter? Only a few hours of light. Are you really sure?" and I wasn't moving as far north as Umeå. Love it though

The Swedish embassy or 'yours'?

Hey thats my city! Welcome:)

Thanks, I've spent a lot of time there! I love it!

And I live across the pond in Vaasa, Finland.

Oh, nice! It's just a ferry trip, right? I was going to play in a Ultimate frisbee tournament there! Didnt end up playing but maybe next yr!

As a Swede, it's rank and literally grinds its way through your gum. Stay away
Muntz
I just can't. It's pretty rank, guys.
NotoriousBadassWhoLovesMusicals
When you've had enough living with those little Swedish pansies you can come here next door, to live where the real men are
NotoriousBadassWhoLovesMusicals
You'll get it when you start watching ice hockey..
inlineDog
*hiss* shoo! Back to the sauna with you!
Muntz
I'm not moving to Sweden for the men ;)
NotoriousBadassWhoLovesMusicals
JohnnyWalkerTexas
Välkommen to Sweden mate! Here, a cunt is called a fitta, but we don't call our friends that. Your friends are rövhattar or CP-barn.
Muntz
Haha, thanks for the lesson! But all I need is Tack för fika!
JohnnyWalkerTexas
If you repeat words like thanks, they'll never guess you're foreign. Tack tack, hej hej and bra bra. Also, sneak 'mysigt' into all convos.
Muntz
and 'absolut, exakt, precis' are used all the fucking time. haha
AlexanderSupertramper
Poor thing. Give him a scratch behind the ear from me.
Muntz
Haha, can do!
SneakyWabbit
Give yourself and your partner a scratch behind the ear too. Good owners.
CrashedandBurned
Put one in under the chin from me. Poor bugger.
memepig
Could I get one too?
buzzl1ght
Give him TWO scratches behind EACH ear from me....
Muntz
If I must!
ijustthrewupinmymouth
Let’s make it three!
xXMisterOatesXx
Give him THREE Scratches behind whichever ear for me.

Done!
