Mezzo Forte

A lively if not lewd action title with excellent fight scenes akin to Cowboy Bebop's rhythmic style and a quirky, hilarious design in general

The Garden of Words

Magnificently detailed scenery encapsulates this touching relationship between two unlikely characters

Ghost in the Shell

The influence for the Matrix, this film is not only a masterpiece of animation and sound but will make you rethink the nature of consciousness and your own individuality

Memories

Three short films, each by a different director, showcasing the individual talent and mastery of each

Neo Tokyo (Manie-Manie)

Another three-part short film showcase, taking you to bizarre worlds impressively flourished considering the short time one spends in each

Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade

A rather somber if not riveting affair in a dystopian Japan administered by fearsome Nazi-like troopers. Based on the manga by Mamoru Oshii (Ghost in the Shell)

Spriggan

An exhilarating, balls to the wall action-sci-fi about a supersoldier tasked with stopping a creepy little tyke from becoming a god

The End of Evangelion

The mind-churning 'conclusion' to my favorite anime of all time. This one will have your eyes bulging out of your head.

Millennium Actress

The late Satoshi Kon produced various masterpieces in his short yet invaluable time with us, Millennium Actress being one of his most beautiful and well-developed. The film reviews the life and times of a mysterious actress, allegorized through her film career

Wolf Children

An adorable, touching and very emotional story about a mother struggling to raise two special children, and the unlikely help she receives along the way

Vampire Hunter D

A demure protagonist chases a kidnapped beauty across breath-taking scenarios, battling a colorful cast of freaks in each. Sexiest cast in a vampire-themed romp since Castlevania

Sword of the Stranger

This film follows the traditional samurai style of film-making; with long, drawn-out scenes showcasing the beauty and tranquility of Japanese countryside and historical architecture, intermitted with some of the best action sequences ever animated

Akira

The flagship of anime film and undoubtedly one of the most spectacular. The multitudinous color, dark spirit and general execution of this work are unfathomable

Tokyo Godfathers

One of Satoshi Kon's most down-to-earth films, Tokyo Godfathers is as emotive as it is humorous. With some of the most humanly realized characters I've ever seen in an anime, this is one any kind of taste can enjoy

Perfect Blue

Can you tell I love Satoshi Kon? The antithesis to Tokyo Godfathers, Perfect Blue is one of the most powerful psychological-thrillers in general media, being simultaneously perturbing and tragic

Redline

A thrilling sci-fi race title with jaw-dropping production. Its development took seven years and used 100,000 hand-made drawings

Ninja Scroll

A gloriously violent and fluid samurai/ninja fantasy made in a time when the industry was more liberal with its gratuity

Blood: The Last Vampire

The film that spawned Saya's various misadventures battling against a host of slobbering monsters. This grim young lady's premiere is unforgettable if not brief

Summer Wars

A vibrant and lively family battle to stop a sadistic artificial intelligence from destroying the cyber world humanity largely exist in. A perfect balance of slice of life and science fiction

Steamboy

Mamoru Hosoda made Steamboy following Akira, a more light-hearted but nevertheless groundbreaking adventure set in industrial revolution England.

Kite

The controversial cult film often cast off as mere hentai. Whilst Kite may be unwatchable by more sensitive viewers, its explicit texture carries a hard-hitting story worthy of its acclaim

The girl who leapt through time! That's a great one!

You had me at lewd.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

A+, would also recommend 'To the Forest of Firefly Lights' and 'Colorful'

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

The Colorful movie and Colorful series are both great, although for very different reasons.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If I remember,Perfect blue is the basis that Black Swan copied from, like scene for scene

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Darren Aronofsky tried to make a Hollywood adaptation of Perfect Blue for years but couldn't get it approved. So he made Black Swan.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Summer Wars, my favorite Digimon Movie!

9 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 0

Garden of Words is 10/10.

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

If you want an visually stunning anime movie I cannot recommend Wings of Honneamise enough.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

One I forgot to add :(

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Didn't Mezzo Forte have like a graphic rape scene?

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Multiple ones. I think three or four. Hard to remember now.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Redline is hype as all hell and I would recommend the hell out of it. Wolf Children was really good and I probably need to watch it again.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I loved Milennium Actress.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I love it as well. They just had a special showing of it at a museum downtown here a few weeks back. Hit me just like the first time.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I was going down the list like "Redline? No... Redline? No... Redli-- oh there it is, phew."

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Don't watch End of Evangelion if you haven't watched Evangelion. Obviously.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Wings of Honneamise is a personal favorite of mine.

9 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 4

It's a p good list but I'm still obliged to tell you that your favorite anime is shit

9 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Not the first person to tell me that lol

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If you're looking for an alternative cry-fest than Grave of the Fireflies, Barefoot Gen. 2 movies, pretty much true-to-life, gut-wrenching.

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

If you're gonna watch Wolf Children, bring tissues. It hits your soul.

9 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 0

I was super pumped for that movie and it left me so disappointed. I seem to be the only person who didn't like it, though.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I loved how simple it was. Loved it

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, I made sure I'd give my mom a call at least a couple times a week after watching this (I was studying abroad at the time).

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Goodness yes, it made me hurt.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I couldn't get over the furry cringe aspect. This is coming from someone who really enjoyed the boy and the beast.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 8

In the context of the plot, they were "wolf" wait for it... "children". No furry cringe lol

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Although I didn't find it cringey, I agree with you in that people forget they showed him transforming into his wolf form with they banged.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No mention of the Redline's soundtrack? Come on, that whole movie is cocaine for your ears.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

bumps don't work on imgur it's all about the points

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They are not in fact hentai, this is how anime was back in the day

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

End of Evangelion will only scare off anyone looking to get into Anime. No one's going to want to watch anymore after that little treasure.

9 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 2

That probably goes for most if not all of these.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I watched Kite, Perfect Blue, and NGE and End of Eva back to back in several days. I have never been the same since.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I'm just glad I left days after each episode to reflect. Watching them all in one sitting is a terrible idea.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm the only one finding the Evangelion endings (all of them) preposterous? The writers wrote themselves into a corner and cheapened out.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I disagree here. The ending has provided so many theories and connections and new things are discovered all the time about them

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"♪ tumbling down, tumbling down, tumbling down~♪"

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

That's Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust

9 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Yea, but it still is a dreat shot of D and gives you a smidge for the type of animation

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Let's be honest here. We only recognize one Vampire Hunter D.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

5cm per second is another absolutely outstanding one.

9 years ago | Likes 60 Dislikes 2

voices of a distant star first short film by the same guy absolute fucking masterpiece

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

5cm per second is lovely to look at, but has nothing at all to say.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Your name. is absolutely amazing

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

5cm was a great film. In fact, I liked it so much I'm STILL despondently wondering about that one girl from my younger days... as homage.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Did I miss something when I watched it? I found it disappointing compared to 5cm per second

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I actually liked garden of words

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

oh so beautifully done! I watch just for the animation. stayed for the story

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Don't you dare..

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Whatever could you be talking about *whistles*

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I <3 Summer Wars and Wolf Children. Anything that company comes out with, actually. And the dubs are fantastic!

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I've been looking for something new along those lines, any recommendations?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Something like those two? Well, The Boy and the Beast is a nice median between the two. Newest movie by the same production company.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Tear jerkers! :)

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Be they happy cries or sad cries, they're good cries.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Don't watch End of Eva without watching the series first. It's the only way the franchise could be more confusing than the last 2 episodes.

9 years ago | Likes 190 Dislikes 3

i was going to say the same thing...glad somone did

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

"(Ah, Ah, Ah-ah-aaaahhhhh), I just keep letting me down, letting me down, letting me doooown"

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I loved the last two episodes. It was beautifully orchestrated chaos

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Thanks

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Better yet, don't watch EVA at all because it's garbage.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 5

Thanks

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is actually how I got into Eva - back in the days of Kazaa it was the first thing to finish downloading...then I had to see the rest.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Or just don't watch it and stick to the original series only. The rest aren't that worth it.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

End of Eva is def worth it. Helps add a lot of closure to the series that they couldn't do due to budget constraints

Episodes 25 and 26 basically take place inside Shinji's mind while End is what happens in reality. So I consider them 2 halves of one whole.

9 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

but end of Evangelion was an abomination, a parody of what fans expected. author made it following death threat, as the story goes

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 11

No it was what was planned from the start. The death threats only came in during it's production.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

wait are we talking about the end where Shinji jerks off on the hospital bed of Asuka, and shit like that ? it was indeed a parody

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

2 some stupid fans who only saw in Evangelion the violent and sexual parts could not understand the brilliant last episodes

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Is the end of Eva the conclusion to the You can (not) redo Movie or is it more like a last episode of the the series in Movie lenght?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's the conclusion to the series, the episodes are 25': Air and 26': My Purest Heart for You, Sincerely Yours. The movie is complementary

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

to the series, with some differences.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If you're a beginner, you should watch school days..

9 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 5

If your thinking of moving in to manga, definitly check out Emergence and Geiger Counter

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I herd that boku no piku is best anim is this tru?

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

Yeah, it's best watched with your parents

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Play the (hentai) game instead. That way you can get the ending from the anime and feel more directly responsible. I truly love School Days.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Actually the second one I saw. The first was Higurashi...

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Bible Black is also good for beginners

9 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 1

I watched Bible Black, way overhyped. There are far better selections in genre

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

At least you didn’t say Boku no Pico.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I second this recommendation.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Named after a title from King Crimson. Who I believe took it from a play.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Prison School and Berserk are also good starting points.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Sayonara Zetsebuo Sensei is best beginner anime, it teaches you a bunch of cool shit about japanese culture too.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What? I'm trying to think back on it and I don't think you learn much as just a lot of weird stuff happens.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Satoshi Kon is amazing! This video will show how capable anime is of storytelling- https://youtu.be/oz49vQwSoTE

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

saw it on shrooms and philosophers stones 7/5 would recommend!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A deep bowl of paprika?

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

What do people mean when they say 'a bowl'? I know that's weed, but how much?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The specific size and dimensions vary between implements, but generally speaking a "bowl" is like "1 serving". The average standard amount.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Exactly 1 bowl

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I just smoked a fat bowl and come across this. I know what I'm doing haha.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

How was it?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Mezzo Forte is almost hentai as a disclaimer

9 years ago | Likes 520 Dislikes 10

That's good to know!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

For, like, 2 scenes total. Remove them, plot undisturbed; like 80s sex scenes, only there bc required.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

If I remember correctly, ones a dream sequence and the other is also similarly inconsequential. They do have a tacked-on feel.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The words Beginner and Mezzo Forte confused me greatly.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I watched a trailer on YouTube. Plenty of up-skirt, tit giggle and vag-bulges to make me feel creepy but the humor and action appear good.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Its a weird one. It goes along fine and dandy, hardcore sex scene from nowhere that adds nothing, then back to asskicking.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah, pretty sure there is a rape scene that is as hardcore as any porn that I've ever seen.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Can confirm

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Go on....

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I'd also put this disclaimer for Kite. Literally the only place I could find it subbed was from a hentai sub group.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Mezzo Forte is and the anime based off of it, Mezzo D.S.A., and that acts as a sequel, isn't.

9 years ago | Likes 40 Dislikes 1

Yeah... They weren't able to budget it without making it porn at first, right?

9 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

I thought it was just a hentai that had such a good story to it that they convinced a studio to continue it for the general public.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Don't forget that animation, oh boy. Such smooth double penetration.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Avery Concerned Penis. Your parents had a helluva sense of humor.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

OP may have seen a cleaned up version of either it or Kite, as they exist for both of these.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

im willing to bet OP hasnt seen even a quarter of these

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Isn't it straight up porn?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"Almost" hentai ? IIRC it has at least two explicit rape scenes.

9 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 1

To be honest one is robot programmed to have sex with them

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

And the other is in a dream.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Uh...No, no. It's pretty much straight super-explicit hardcore hentai, which happens to have a framing plot. Unless it's the bad edit.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

It's one of the most "hardcore" hentai anythings I've ever seen - so if you don't want to see that hotness, find the "safe" version.

9 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 2

There is no safe version, there is Mezzo(tame) and the second Move Mezzo Forte

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hardcore? Oh you sweet summer child...

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

If Mezzo Forte is hardcore for you, boy do I have some recommendations...

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 2

I guess "hardcore" is a relative term. It's not, you know, guro or tentacle rape or anything.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

My first thought: "umm is that Mezzo Forte the anime with like 5 rape scenes? She's also pretty young looking..."

9 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 5

It kinda disgusts me. I want to watch it but I don't want to relive my rape. Why is that enjoyable to people :(

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 4

japanese have a culture of rape since medieval times (thats why you see so many hentai about rape)

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

if i remember correctly there is a version without the rape/sex scenes

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And I good one in my opinion, not like I'm an expert though

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

while yes, "Mezzo Forte" the movie(made by the same people as Kite) has an unedited version that is hentai 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 1

the TV show based on it(pictured) while a bit perverted at times, is actually a pretty fun show even if we are left a bit wanting at the end

9 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 0

I always thought that was a precursor to Kite

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I can see where that comes from.

in anime is how unrelatable the stories or characters are (after all, the East can be strangely different). I found Koe No Katachi's (c)

9 years ago | Likes 66 Dislikes 0

story, which features a young man who bullies a mute girl and comes to regret it and seek redemption, very relatable and interesting.

9 years ago | Likes 69 Dislikes 0

Your description makes it sounds like a less fun Kung fu hussle, that said I'll probably still check it out

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

God I can't English, sounds a lot like kung fu hussle

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Fair point, but from your post it sounds a little bit like you can relate to bullying a mute girl lol.

They never even kissed and everything after chapter 40 something was extremely melodramatic. I still really enjoyed it but the ending sucked

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I agree. After all the build up the ending was a little rushed, like the author ran out of steam

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

In English or does it come in furagana?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

English. I was able to get all 7 volumes at my local bookstore. In English it goes by "A Silent Voice"

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Maybe 6-8 hours to read through depending on how fast you can read

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0
